Story
When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food-delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization”. Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world.

Nothing ever changes in Sanders. The town's still got a video store, for God's sake. So why doesn't Eli Teague want to leave? Not that he'd ever admit it, but maybe he's been waiting - waiting for the traveler to come back. January Cole’s job just got a whole lot harder. Not that running security at the Paradox was ever really easy. Nothing’s simple at a hotel where the ultra-wealthy tourists arrive costumed for a dozen different time periods, all eagerly waiting to catch their “flights” to the past. Or where proximity to the timeport makes the clocks run backward on occasion—and, rumor has it, allows ghosts to stroll the halls. None of that compares to the corpse in room 526.

Story
Robinson Crusoe is one of the most enduring adventures of the past four centuries and one of the most well-known works in the English language. Or is it? Recently discovered amidst the papers of the 20th-century writer and historian H. P. Lovecraft is what claims to be the true story of Robinson Crusoe. Taken from the castaway's own journals and memoirs, and fact-checked by Lovecraft himself, it is free from many of Defoe's edits and alterations. From Lovecraft's work a much smoother, simpler tale emerges - but also a far more disturbing one.

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

“Absolutely brilliant!” (Jonathan Maberry, New York Times best-selling author)
The new supernatural thriller from New York Times best-selling author Peter Clines
You can still owe the dead.
Hector was the best of the best. A government operative who could bring armies to a halt and nations to their knees. But when his own country betrayed him, he dropped off the grid and picked up the first of many bottles.
Natalie can’t remember much of her life before her family brought her to the US, but she remembers the cages. And getting taken away to the Project with dozens of other young children to become part of their nightmarish experiments. That’s how she ended up with the ghost of a dead secret agent stuck in her head.
And Hector owes Natalie’s ghost a big favor.

What is this?
I'm a pretty big peter clines fan with that said. WTF hours of a 12 year old girl explaining a situation about a deep state compound from a 12 year old girls point of view? Go back to threshold universe Pete. This is awful. The narrator is also seriously lacking may that's part of the problem I don't know but I've listened to everything clines has done and this is just WTF.

Not his best work... Good ideas going nowhere.
I'm a HUGE fan of his other books, but this one left me bored. There's good ideas here but they're strung along between boring action scenes and wooden dialogue.
Clines actually explains the genesis of this book in the afterword, where he had a really interesting idea that quickly turned into four chapters without any planning, and then he had to figure out what to do for the next 300 pages... (spoiler: not a lot)
This isn't up to par with The Door, or even his later Ex series. What happened? Is it burnout? Laziness? I was thrilled to get this downloaded, but that turned to disappointment soon afterwards. It's just not good. After his last book, it's looking like a downward trajectory. I'm not super thrilled about that idea.

Not his best work
warning, slight spoiler ahead. I'm a huge Peter Clines fan. He has a great way of using descriptive narrative that really draws you into his stories and usually his stories are compelling. This one is not a compelling story. I found the girl's narrative of her story too omnipotent for a 12 year old. The story starts relatively cliche and the plot is predictable. There were fun elements of mystery and supernatural stuff but all in all it was overshadowed by page after page of repetitive descriptions of puking that do not further the story line. I did make it to the end just to see what happened but it was a tortured route. There are some fantastic, really fantastic Peter Clines works out there and this is a wonderful writer, just not this book. sorry.

Another fun listen from a great author!
A little different, as you can expect from Mr Clines. Has ties to other characters you may remember, in a world that you can recognize, without being a direct link to any of his other stories. A good chunk is the narration of a horribly abused and psychologically programmed young immigrant girl, but if you progress in the story you will see that it is about much more than just a government black-site.
Narrator did well, I just don't feel like he had much range, but not everyone can be Ray Porter I guess.

Disgusting
I'm so disappointed. I've tried more than three times to get through this book. I just can't though, because it's too much gore involving kids. Completely disgusting. I never would have expected such from this author. He's absolutely one of my favourites. I think the book description needs to have warning that it's straight up horror. I've never 'read' anything so gross. What's more annoying is that when the book isn't being horrific and gory, it's a super boring road trip between a man and a twelve year old girl. They drive, they buy clothes, they go to motels, and repeat, interspersed with horror I've never read before. Let alone in a Peter Clines novel. I just don't understand why it's been written like this. I absolutely love all other Clines books. And as for the narrator of this one, he's dead pan to the point of exhaustion. There are so many information dumps too, told by the the twelve year old girl. She goes on and on chapter after chapter, explaining the torture and suffering of children in unnecessary supernatural horror ways, that I won't describe herein as I don't want to sicken any one else.

Clines does it again
This is not another entry in the Terminus series, or Ex-Heroes. What it is however, is a cracking story in its own right. It reads like a TV series, and has some twists and bumps that add to the journey along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed this, and look forward to what is next.

Should have been a Threshold entry.
Enjoyable enough, but so close to the authors mainline series of horror novels, I was left wondering constantly why it wasn't a part of that lore. With the loose continuity of that series, it could fit well with a couple of tweaks.
This is certainly a book that will trigger more than a few people, it has cruelty to kids and body horror but is well told in Peter Clines' usual easy going tone and meaning.
Worthwhile and well narrated by Timothy Andrés Pabon, if you can stomach the themes.

A great Agent story with a Weird Fiction twist
I approached this book as an established fan of Peter Clines' "threshold" series, the nature of which is such that it's hard to say whether this book is an intentional continuation. What's important is that if you enjoyed those books, The Broken Room has all the elements you liked about those in a fresh new package.
The dynamic between the two protagonists - a former SpecOps agent and a pre-teenage girl - is both natural and touching, and each of them get their time to shine. In true style, the story takes a surprising swerve into the weird and unnatural, in ways that will put a smirk on the face of old fans and drop the jaws of new fans. I enjoyed the inclusions of contemporary themes surrounding the treatment of detainees at the US/Mexican border.
Full disclosure: 14 remains my favourite Peter Clines book, but that's mostly because of my personal preference for 'everyday' characters being thrust into a mysterious or threatening situation, as opposed to slick and super-capable ex-military characters. Hector's sections contain plenty of gun-nerding and impressive "over the years" deed-drops which I personally find a little dull, but is sure to please anyone who's enjoyed any spy or military fiction. And for those who don't, like me, these aspects are absolutely not disproprotionate and do not distract from the excellence of the story.

Engaging but derivative
An interesting story told well, but it really reminded me of Eleven's experiences in Hawkins Lab of Stranger Things.

yes and no
Fascinating idea, but a little clishe and pg13 for me. if it had included more realistic details and less of the "old alcoholic ex soldier saves the day" I would've loved it. I wasn't charmed by the girl either.

Just not for me I guess.
Once I saw in audible the sentence "From skeptic to obsessed" written about a person reading "14" I got curious and purchased "14"
I got obsessed too - not only by 14 but by the Peter Clines catalogue - minus the X-hero series, which is not my flavor.
So when "The Broken Room" came out, I spent a penny... or at least a credit on it at once and dove into it. Boy I had high expectations... It was a PETER CLINES novel..
But man... was I disappointed. Long before the end I realized that this was a mistake. A bad one. One long boring road-trip. I felt like I was reading a mix of the Stephen King books "The Institute" and "Billy Summers" - both of which also disappointed me - the latter a LOT more than the former.
Perhaps I am just getting on in years fast, and seem to change flavors in books, I don´t know, but nothing in "The Broken Room" appealed to me.. simply nothing.

Loved every minute.
Great story, great pacing, great characters. Beautifully written, beautifully narrated.
I was a latecomer to Clines' books and have often struggled with the "where do I start?" question.
Just dive in with this corking stand-alone story!

Ignore the 1 star reviews.
Ignore the 1 star reviews, it's just a bunch of Americans who can't accept the inhumane way they treat immigrants.
The book is maybe not so good as 14 and The Fold, but it's on par with Dead Moon and the one about a guy on a boat (forgot the title).
