Barbara Pym is one of the 20th-century's wittiest, and most underrated, novelists. Her perceptive comedies of manners, centred around the domestic lives and loves of unassuming middle-class Englishwomen, won her many devoted readers and saw her hailed as a modern-day Jane Austen. Yet she spent 15 years out of print in the 1960s and '70s, until Philip Larkin championed her work in the Times Literary Supplement. Her seventh novel was subsequently shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and writers from Jilly Cooper to Alexander McCall Smith continue to laud her talent today.

Brought the Brontes to life
I've never been able to stick with a Bronte book. My mind wonders off and I get bored before the end of the first chapters - except Jane Eyre. I managed that one once.
This audiobook brought to life stories I've been wishing I could enjoy for years. Every aspect was thoroughly enjoyable and I've listened to a couple of the stories more than once. It's well worth 5 stars all round.

background music
just issuing a heads-up , on Jane Eyre at moment which is the first story and there is consistent background music at a fairly loud level. enough be distracting and intrusive.
worse , the music is Gorecki's Symphony of sorrowful Songs which is tawdry and tedious piece.
I find it strange logic that we choose an audiobook only to have someone's choice of music forced upon us. the frequency of this seems to be increasing.
the BBC are at fault for this one but Audible are guilty in some cases, there's a Hitchcock edition of the free Audible books which has music constantly and is impossible to listen to.

Jane Eyre
A wonderful abridged audible version of the most sublime love story.
Amanda Hale plays Jane as the quiet, reflective, sad, strong, robust young woman who comes alive through the love or Rochester... who emotionally sets her free.
Tom Burke narrates the perfect Rochester from the novel: independent, strong minded, a thinker, passionate, as emotionally damaged as Jane is... waiting to be set free by her.

This is what I’ve been waiting for!
I love dramatisations. Ever since listening to the dramatisations of Jane Austen’s novels I have been obsessed; and eagerly awaiting the dramatisations of the Bronte sisters novels! Brilliant adaptations and performances. I especially appreciate the inclusion of ALL of the novels not simply Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, which, while brilliant, are always the only Bronte books to get any attention in popular culture.
In conclusion, yay! I love them! And thank you.

Fresher than the freshest air ...
Author Rachel Joyce and producer Tracey Neale have put together the most beautiful collection of the Bronte sisters books in a unique and loving way. They've given me a whole new perspective on Wuthering Heights which I always found too dark. I never understood its popularity. I should have realised the love that would be brought to the task by Rachel Joyce, one of my favourite authors. And now, to hear these wonderfully performed radio plays written by Rachel Joyce, I understand why other performances and radio adaptations leave me cold. Thank you. Congratulations for the freshness whilst maintaining the honesty and spirit of the Bronte voices. This is an excellent collection where we are treated to the social mores of the past whilst highlighting how little progress we've made. I visited the snow-clad Parsonage in Haworth when I was travelling, with the hope of soaking up some skills by osmosis.

A captivating dramatisation
This is a great dramatisation of the Bronte collection. While I felt that Jayne Eyre could have had a little more depth, overall I loved the production. I thought Wuthering Heights, and the Tennant of Wildfell Hall were outstanding in the way they captured Heathcliffe's brutality, and the Huntingdon's controlling nature. Highly recommended.

My Goodness. That was Amazing.
The adaption and performance of these books was so clever. Listening to the reflection of the script writer and producer at the end of the collection gave insight to how much these people love the Brontë sisters' works and how faithful they tried remain to the themes, atmosphere and journey of each of the stories. This is rare in dramatisations of books. I often feel too much of the story is sacrificed.
I could actually imagine the sisters sitting around their table and sharing their tales all those years ago. The encouragement and inspiration that they had for each other must have been so beautiful.
Something interesting- I personally have always found reading Wuthering Heights really depressing and hard going. (I know many would disagree!) And while I still find this story exhausting, the portrayal gave me a unique understanding of the characters, their backgrounds and underlying psyche. This helped me process it better. I was still a mess at the end!
In every story, the actors blew me away with their skill and authentic portrayal of the characters. I don't think there was one cringe-worthy performance.
I've had the best time this week while listening to these stories. Highly, highly recommend. Thanks to all those involved for sharing your passion and talent.
