Publisher's Summary

The long-awaited first book by the founder of the enormously popular Bullet Journal® organizational system.

For years Ryder Carroll tried countless organizing systems, Online and off, but none of them fit the way his mind worked. Out of sheer necessity, he developed a method called the Bullet Journal that helped him become consistently focused and effective. When he started sharing his system with friends who faced similar challenges, it went viral. Just a few years later, to his astonishment, Bullet Journaling is a global movement.

The Bullet Journal Method is about much more than organizing your notes and to-do lists. It's about what Carroll calls "intentional living": weeding out distractions and focusing your time and energy in pursuit of what's truly meaningful, in both your work and your personal life. It's about spending more time with what you care about, by working on fewer things. His new book shows you how to...

  • Track the past: Using nothing more than a pen and paper, create a clear and comprehensive record of your thoughts.
  • Order the present: Find daily calm by tackling your to-do list in a more mindful, systematic, and productive way.
  • Design the future: Transform your vague curiosities into meaningful goals, and then break those goals into manageable action steps that lead to big change.

Carroll wrote this book for frustrated list-makers, overwhelmed multitaskers, and creatives who need some structure. Whether you've used a Bullet Journal for years or have never seen one before, The Bullet Journal Method will help you go from passenger to pilot of your own life.

BuJo Changed the way I plan

I was introduced to the Bullet Journal (BuJo) on a FB group. I no longer remember exactly which one, but I ended up at Boho Berry with Kara. This is the ONLY planner system that I have been able to consistently use over a six-month time frame. In traditional planners I forced myself to use them until I just put them aside out of frustration. I’d start strong in January, determined to use it the entire year. My notes, tasks, appointments and other things I wanted to write in there did not fit into their little squares and columns. I don’t think the way standard planners are laid out. I ended up with sticky notes and loose papers which I later could not find or would spend long minutes searching through them trying to find what I was looking for.

I started my own BuJo in August 2017 and marvel that 16 months later I am STILL using Ryder's system. I was surprised, but should not have been, that Ryder has ADD. Well, I have ADHD and thus really relate to his problem solving process to come up with solutions to get him organized and keep up with his goals, tasks, ideas, etc. I also relate to how flexible the BuJo system is. It is what you need it to be. It is completely customizable within a simple structure that he explains in the book.

When this book was on pre-order, I made sure to snag my hard copy reservation. So now I have the physical book AND the audible version. Ryder is witty and interesting to listen to and thus you want to listen. I'm now on my second time through listening. You hear things a second time that maybe you missed the first. His narration style really makes this a joy and not a drudgery. After all, this is his own writing and he adds fitting inflection where it needs to be. I love the little aside stories he has included to really expand the point he is making, the verbal visual illustration. He has also made all the examples into a downloadable PDF so you have a visual reference (note: the PDF is 60+ pages so think before you tell it to ‘print’). But this really works for me as I am an audio/visual learner. I cannot just read a book. I end up skipping words (ADHD kicking in here) and missing the point or getting the wrong point. So hearing it and seeing it works well. Thus why I got the book and the audible, so I could basically follow along as he reads.

You could call this a 'how to' book, or even a 'self-help' book. Overall the BuJo is about a system of analog tools to help you process YOUR life. You don't need a fancy notebook to start. So with only a pen and a notebook, you can begin. This is the cheapest trial of a system I've ever seen. If it works for you, improves on reducing your stress and makes your days easier, then it's a win! If not, well, you've spent at most $2 at the Dollar Store and a few months trying it out. Ryder says to give it 2-3 months. I would suggest you go four or more and then take a good look back through what you've done. This should be a full notebook if you've used it for its full potential as Ryder describes. Then you can truly evaluate it against other systems and whether it's worth continuing or not. We have been told it takes 21 days to develop a habit, but it really takes more than two months. So four or so months will get you past the 'oh I forgot about my BuJo' and get the habit of using it. It took me 6 months to really expand it and use it more than just a calendar and list of to-do items. Everyone is different.

Overall I really enjoyed listening. Ryder has a great voice and uses interesting inflection which makes listening more akin to conversation, not being read to. I also highly praise the system he is teaching here. It has made a huge difference in my life as each BuJo is personal to you and your needs. In our massive world of choices, this system really helps us dial down the noise and focus.

Excellent book with outstanding pleasing voice

I already bought the book but I've already saw many of the videos on YouTube from the author. This audio book is recorded by the author and his voice telling the story is just perfect. One of my best audio book in all aspect.

This is not simply a 'how to bullet journal..'

This is an invitation to what is called 'an examined life.' The bullet journal is just an instrument to begin a life of reflection,
of 'big picture' living, of moving from the past into a blessed future. This narration is wonderfully soothing and relate-able, full of real life stories and examples. I am retiring in 2 weeks and plan to bullet journal into my new life.

Just tell me how to use the stupid method.

I have both the book and the audio book. there is too much editorializing and telling me how great and effective Bullet Journaling is. But it just won't tell me how to do it.

I'm sorry I don't care about how the method totally revolutionized some random womans life. I want to know how it can help me. just tell me how to do it.

Are you ready to confront who you are?

If you search quick tips to how to note your thoughts then this is NOT for you. It’s not a quick guide to creating a custom calendar, but rather a deep analysis of yourself, a methodology that allows you to confront yourself with yourself.:) The author stresses out the importance of „WHY you do stuff” and encourages you to think about what you really want, only then he gives you the tools to maintain and tame the crazy reality with soooooo many things you have to take care of.

There is an opinion here about the book that says - “I’m not interested in stories of some women, just give me the tools”. When I read it I though, oh...that’s a good point, but now, after reading it, I don’t agree. Firstly, there are very few stories in the book, secondly, they illustrate the point much better than just stating a cold fact, so they do serve a purpose. Finally, as I mentioned, it’s not a quick start guide to your router, so don’t expect it to be. It’s a very short (yes, it is short) introduction that makes you rethink your goals and priorities in life.

Maybe the title creates a confusion, because I also thought at first that this book is just about HOW to create a bullet journal and that’s it, but the truth is, most of the content is about art of life in general and how to live it fully, which makes perfect sense. What’s the point of organizing your busy life if most of you daily actions don’t make sense because they don’t bring you to what you really want??

This book is great, but ONLY for the people who are ready to confront themselves with who they really are. Those who prefer to live illusions, then stay away.:)

Like talking with a friend about life

I have listened to the audio book twice now. It’s less about planning a day and far more about living a richer life. And his voice is so calm and relaxing. Listening is like a friend sitting with you and talking about life. I also read along in the hardcopy so i could mark it up, and stop and reread a particularly meaningful paragraph. Then I took notes. Twice. It really “sings” to me.

Thank you, Ryder, for this gift.
