To all appearances, Dan Chase is a harmless retiree in Vermont with two big mutts and a grown daughter he keeps in touch with by phone. But most 60-year-old widowers don't have multiple driver's licenses, savings stockpiled in banks across the country, and a bugout kit with two Beretta Nanos stashed in the spare bedroom closet. Most have not spent decades on the run.

Jane Whitefield is a Native American guide who leads solitary outcasts through hostile territory to escape the vengeance of their enemies. But the shaded forest paths her Seneca ancestors might have followed on such missions have all been converted to superhighways, and now the safest way stations are crowded urban buildings that offer the camouflage of anonymity. Still, the supply of runaways - and the need for a woman who will take great risks to save them - have never been greater.

Instead, he finds the papers the professor has compiled for the CIA, which include a blueprint for throwing a large city into chaos. Never a doubt. Never a mistake. Always for justice. Never for revenge. She's the person you hire when you need something fixed-permanently. With a strict set of criteria, she evaluates every request and chooses only a few. No more than one job per country, per year. She will only step in if it's clear that justice will not be served any other way. Her jobs are completed with skill and precision, and never result in inquiry or police investigation. Publisher's Summary
From the New York Times best-selling author Thomas Perry, "who can be depended upon to deliver high-voltage shocks" (Stephen King), comes a new thriller about an unlikely burglar - a young woman in her 20s - who realizes she must solve a string of murders or else become the next victim.
Elle Stowell is a young woman with an unconventional profession: burglary. But Elle is no petty thief - with just the right combination of smarts, looks, and skills, she can easily stroll through ritzy Bel Air neighborhoods and pick out the perfect home for plucking the most valuable items. This is how Elle has always gotten by - she is good at it, and she thrives on the thrill. But after stumbling upon a grisly triple homicide while stealing from the home of a wealthy art dealer, Elle discovers she is no longer the only one sneaking around. Somebody is searching for her.
As Elle realizes her knowledge of the high-profile murder has made her a target, she races to solve the case before becoming the next casualty, using her breaking-and-entering skills to uncover the truth about exactly who the victims were and why someone might have wanted them dead.
With high-stakes action and shocking revelations, The Burglar will keep listeners on the edge of their seats as they barrel toward the heart-racing conclusion.

From breaking the law to helping the law....
I've seen some very mixed reviews about Thomas Perry's new book but I loved it! Talk about taking an about face this character takes.
Elle is a burglar who decides to rob the home of a wealthy art dealer What she finds instead is three dead bodies locked in a ménage a trois. Not realizing there are pinhole cameras she takes a video camera the threesome had been using. The next thing Elle knows, she is being hunted.
When her best friend is murdered because of her, Elle decides it's either find out who committed the murders or be the next victim.
What happens next is a wild game of cat and mouse. People are after her and she wants to get enough evidence to get them convicted. But first she must find out who they are! It will take all of her burglary skills to break into some of the most dangerous places (for her) to find out who and more important why.
Christina Delaine does an excellent job narrating. She also narrates "The Fixer" series.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Too slow and unexciting for me.
I rarely leave reviews but yet rely on them when I'm searching for a new book and/or author to read. That being said I feel compelled to say...it was painful to get through this book. I will often times stop listening after the first couple of chapters if the story doesn't grab me but because the summary of the book sounded like a great read, I kept going. I should have stopped listening at the beginning. The story was so drawn out and filled with unnecessary details and it just never got exciting for me. I should know better when I purchase a 2 for 1 title, this happens a lot with Audible.

Top-notch
Thomas Perry should be at the top of everyone's reading list. The story plots are complex and fascinating. The characterizations seem like real people who by careful planning and physical conditioning can do nearly impossible acts. This story is about a female burglar who finds a triple murder while robbing the house. She is being followed and people who seem like police are questioning her friends. when attempts are made on her life she knows these people are not the police and must be the killers. Action proceeds at a furiuos pace and I couldn't stop listening.

A fun suspense mystery!
THE BURGLAR is Thomas Perry's 24th or 25th novel. The old man still has it. His first novel, The Butcher's Boy, is still his best, but he has never released a bad one. The protagonist is 24 year old Elle Stowell who makes her living as a burglar of high end homes in southern California seeking mostly small expensive items. She approaches her job by planning every detail, but she suddenly finds herself with a price on her head forcing her to start being an investigator to find out who wants her dead. Christina Delaine narrates wonderfully.

Disappointing
Big fan of Thomas Perry novels. Loved the Jane Whitfield series, would like to see more, very cleverly done, loved the way he walked through her techniques, even her heritage made the character more interesting. This one just fell flat for me. Lacked a huge amount of reality, who makes those kinds of decisions when faced with life threatening situations...nobody. The plot was highly predictable and while the description of her tactics as a burglar where somewhat interesting it didn't make up for the lack of believably. And the ending was flat, I agree with the other reviewer who said it was like Thomas Perry just lost interest and just ended the story as quickly as possible. The reader did a decent job.
Hope he is not considering this as a series, he can write better than this, very disappointing.

Love this author
I recently discovered Thomas Perry with The Old Man. I absolutely loved that story. I enjoyed this one also, and wish it wasn't over. With all 3 of his recent books, I find myself wanting to follow the main characters into their next life chapters. They are very good, intriguing stories that compel the reader forward. They are not predictable and do not follow a formula. I like that. I think you'll enjoy getting to know Elle.
