Story
When Rin aced the Keju - the Empire-wide test to find the most talented youth to learn at the Academies - it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from Rooster Province could pass without cheating; to Rin’s guardians, who believed they’d finally be able to marry her off and further their criminal enterprise; and to Rin herself, who realized she was finally free of the servitude and despair that had made up her daily existence. That she got into Sinegard - the most elite military school in Nikan - was even more surprising.

Publisher's Summary
The exciting end to the Poppy War trilogy, R. F. Kuang's acclaimed, award-winning epic fantasy that combines the history of 20th-century China with a gripping world of gods and monsters, to devastating, enthralling effect.
After saving her nation of Nikan from foreign invaders and battling the evil Empress Su Daji in a brutal civil war, Fang Runin was betrayed by allies and left for dead.
Despite her losses, Rin hasn't given up on those for whom she has sacrificed so much - the people of the Southern provinces and especially Tikany, the village that is her home. Returning to her roots, Rin meets difficult challenges and unexpected opportunities. While her new allies in the Southern Coalition leadership are sly and untrustworthy, Rin quickly realises that the real power in Nikan lies with the millions of common people who thirst for vengeance and revere her as a goddess of salvation.
Backed by the masses and her Southern Army, Rin will use every weapon to defeat the Dragon Republic, the colonising Hesperians and all who threaten the shamanic arts and their practitioners. As her power and influence grows, though, will she be strong enough to resist the Phoenix's intoxicating voice urging her to burn the world and everything in it?

Gut wrenching twists and turns
Kept me on my mental toes right through and I found myself pining and wishing for a sequel the closer I got to the end.

Excellent series.
Well that's me finished with my journey through The Poppy War series, The Burning God was a fantastic conclusion to a very harrowing series full of War and the atrocities that come with it. My only scruples with the whole series was the main protagonist Rin, I know she has gone through hell and back but her whining just got worse as the story continued. Thank god we had Chen Kitay's character, as a fellow reader said that i was chatting with, he was the main man. A brilliant strategist and fellow student of Rin's at Sinegard school of warfare was my favourite. The worldbuilding, setting and plot is brilliant, with the Hesperian’s bringing their advanced technology to the Nikara Empire, using the airships and arbalast guns and with the subdued help of the Dragon Republic are looking to bring the Nikarians under their rule and the Gods of the pantheon to end. But Rin and her God of the Phoenix stand in their way. To start all over fresh again, you have to burn it all down first. The Poppy War trilogy is an unfiltered look at the brutality of violence war and how its aftermath leaves a lasting effect on those who are left to pick up the pieces. This series is definitely one of those that a reader must read at their own discretion. The narration by Emily Woo Zeller is excellent through out the whole series. If you love asian and mythical lore, then this is must read....🖤🔥☠️

Sunk cost fallacy
This book is the perfect example of a sunk cost fallacy. The previous books did just enough to keep me invested and wanting too see how it played out. However, this series got so bad that I really should have given it up. Entire plot arcs that take up massive chucks of the book are resolved in a couple of minutes. The magic system is paradoxically too simple yet overly convoluted at the same time. Characters don't feel like they grow or evolve. Rin is a distinctly unlikeable protagonist who keeps making the same mistakes despite her protestations to the contrary. The first half of the first book of the book was amazing. It was never that good again, and I wish I'd stopped listening there.

Masterful writing but…
Don’t get me wrong, these books have been incredible. The pacing has been perfect, the plot has been the right level of unpredictable, the characters have been distinct.
But after giving up tens of hours of my life to these books, I feel kind of cheated.

Simply breathtaking.
This is high-fantasy at its best. Comparable to the historical fiction of R. R. Martin, and R. R. Tolkien. I jumped in on the last part, and though I missed a lot of the Lore that had been established in the first two novels, I was immediately gripped by the originality of the premise of mortals channeling gods.
Also, Emily Woo Zeller’s performance is vibrant, energetic, and sincere. I think we have the makings of another great pairing.

Not the right ending
I loved this series but feel let down with this final book. The story goes around in circles of trust - betrayal - destroy. Basically everyone Rin meets.
I actually yelled out at her to "stop" whilst I was driving.
Very disappointed with the ending.
In saying that, I still binged listened to this book in a few days. Just like the previous books which I re-listened to. They were just as good second time around.

This is a decent series that is very well performed. Dunno if it's worth the money I spent on all three books. I'm not sure I'll put in the effort to listen to them again.
