Publisher's Summary

"You can't Schitt's Creek a town, Tank."

"And you can't verb a noun, son."

When a family of former pro football players buys a small Texas town, they didn't intend to start a war with its residents...or to fall in love.

Ever since his career-ending injury, Pat has bounced from job to job, idea to idea, short-lived relationship to short-lived relationship. But when his father purchases the town of Sheet Cake, Pat suddenly sees his life with clear purpose: Get his brothers on board with his dad's wild idea and win back the one woman who got away.

Lindy was supposed to be traveling the world, not stuck in a small town, caring for her niece. But she would do anything to keep custody of Jo—even if that looks like a marriage of convenience with the man who already broke her heart once.

Now if she can only keep herself from falling back in love with her husband....

This is a small-town marriage-of-convenience romantic comedy with plenty of sizzle while keeping the bedroom door closed. It's the first in a spinoff series following Harper's brothers (from Falling for Your Best Friend). You don't need to have listened to the Love Clichés series first to enjoy this audiobook.

Female Narrator Woes

I'm not finished with the book yet, I'm about 1/3 thru, I like the story and male narrator so far. The female narrator however, is one of the worst I've ever come across. She is incredibly slow and monotone. I had to toggle the speed up and down between narrators to make it bearable. Even still I found I had to register to sections because its harder to comprehend with such a monotone delivery. I listen to 2-3 books/week, I have pretty realistic narrator expectations, this is stand out bad. I'd have given performance 1 star but for the male narrator.

horrible female narrator

I loved the story so I finished it, but the female narrator ruined it for me. She ended every sentence with a falling intonation. Very distracting.

Super Cute

I love me a good romantic comedy. I read the book and decided I'd like to listen to it as well. I enjoyed it the second go around as well as the first. I picked up on things that I missed or just forgot about. The characters and the story line were adorable. The narration took me a minute to get in sync with, but once I did I really enjoyed it

*I was given a copy of this audible by the author and this is my honest opinion.

Female narrator!! Ugh

The female makes this impossible to listen. She had ruined this book. It was painful. I returned the book before finishing.

Loved everything EXCEPT the female narrator

Ugh! Lorana Hoopes is almost painful to listen to! Her inflection, pronunciation, and lilt almost gave me an eye twitch! Such a cute story and Noah Collins performance was on point. I’m not sure I can make it through another book with Ms. Hoopes as the narrator.

Such a great story!

I really enjoyed this story. The characters are great, and I’m looking forward to future books in this series. The male narrator was wonderful. My only complaint was the female narrator. There were a number of mispronounced words, and her inflection was kind of odd- accenting the wrong words.

Very interesting story

Getting to the resolution seemed too long, but I enjoyed the story. Although it was mainly a love story, it had some secondary issues that fleshed out the characters and moved the plot along.

Second chance romance, meddling townsfolk, and porch roosters — oh my!

Boy was it fun to hear these characters brought to life!! I loved the sweet southern drawls. They were so sweet and had a good twang, but were still understandable (even listening at my faster 1.7x pace).

I thought the narrators really did this book justice with their storytelling abilities and would highly recommend this audiobook to any romcom lovers!

Below is my review of the content of the book.

This book had it all!! A swoony leading man. A second chance romance. Overly nosey Sheeters. A marriage of convenience. Flaming squirrels. An app to share all the town gossip. Rules meant to be broken. An adorable child. A porch rooster named Elvis. Could a reader ask for anything more?!?

Pat and Lindy were literary perfection. I love all of the emotions and memories that come with a good second chance romance story. I absolutely adored how hard Pat worked to win Lindy back. The banter and rules were hilarious and it literally had me cracking up whenever Pat would “bend” the rules😂

I loved Lindy and how caring she was. She worked so hard and gave up her whole life to care for those around which showed so much about her character. Jo was the epitome of adorable. Like if you looked up the world adorable in a dictionary, her picture would be there. Her random facts were so endearing and I enjoyed how much she loved reading and her maturity at such a young age.

All of the Graham brothers (and Tank) have my heart and I loved the cameos from some of my favorite Love Clichés characters! I can’t wait for the other books in this series! Emma St. Clair is 500% an auto-buy author for me! If you haven’t read her books before, this is your sign to start!!!

Thank you so much to the author for a complimentary audiobook copy. All opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

One of my favorite Emma St. Clair books!

Emma St. Clair is one of my favorite romcom authors and The Buy-In is an absolute favorite. It’s a sweet, hilarious second chance/marriage of convenience love story. I found myself frequently laughing out loud, fangirling over Patrick and his selflessness, touched by Lindy’s situations, and loving the people of Sheet Cake, Texas.

Emma captured the quirky, fun people of a small town perfectly. The “Sheeters” add surprising depth to this sweet, funny story. She’s also taken the heart wrenching subjects of child custody and dementia and lovingly created a story that both touches the heart and adds a bit of humor and lightness.

Lindy has a complicated past. She doesn’t trust or let her guard down easily. She struggles with a mother who has dementia and a sister who abandoned her daughter Jojo whom Lindy is now raising. Five year old Jojo is darling! This sweet little girl has wisdom beyond her years and soaks up all the love showered on her. But, when JoJo’s mother suddenly wants custody, Lindy does everything in her power to keep her including considering a marriage of convenience to the one man whom she never forgot and broke her heart.

Patrick is amazing! He’s not only handsome and built, but is a giver. He loves performing acts of service and this endearing quality shines all throughout the story. I loved all the little details he remembers and his patience in trying to make up for past mistakes to show Lindy he really loves her.

The audiobook version was really good! I’m used to another male narrator narrating Emma’s books so it took me a chapter or two to get used to the new narrator. However, his smooth Southern drawl really won me over! I ended up loving the audiobook version. The female narrator as always was fantastic! Both did a great job really bringing these characters to life as well as the various eccentric townspeople of Sheet Cake!

Highly recommend this book whether in audiobook or ebook/paperback format. It deserves all the stars! It can definitely be read as a stand alone. However, fans of the Love Cliche series will enjoy cameo appearances from lovably familiar characters. I can’t wait to read Winnie and James’ story! Thank you to Emma St. Clair for an audiobook format of the book. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.

A fantastic closed door romance

My 2nd Emma St.Clair book and she certainly delivered. I listened to the audio version of this book and lapped it up. The narrators absolutely nailed their characters and I could get lost in Noah Collins voice.
This was a great 2nd chance romance with a good mix of marriage of convenience and forced proximity. Full of humour, swoon and some sweet moments that just left me with a huge smile on my face. I really enjoyed seeing Pat and Lindy reconnecting and watching the romance develope. His attitude to Lindys situation was so sweet. Nothing seemed to phase him. Great story great side characters and I'm excited to see what comes next from this series

Cute second chance romance

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Thank you again to Emma for providing me with an audible code I really enjoyed this story and can’t wait read the next book in the series!

✨Small Town
✨Second Chance Romance
✨GROVELLING
✨Marriage of Convenience
✨Neurodivergent Characters
✨Closed Door Romance (sorry besties there is 0 smut but don’t let that put you off!)

The Buy-In follows Patrick Graham a former football player and Lindy Darcy a travel writer. The two had a casual relationship whilst being at college but kept rules in place to avoid taking anything further as they knew they’d be going separate ways to pursue their careers. When it got closer to breaking things off, Patrick decided to ghost Lindy rather than formally breaking up with her only to realise soon after she was ‘the one’.

Patrick’s father has just bought a town called Sheet Cake which lo and behold happens to be the hometown of Lindy Darcy, but Patrick shouldn’t have anything to worry about right because Lindy is long gone travelling the world and writing about it. Well it appears that Lindy never had the chance to leave the town of Sheet Cake as she was left with the responsibility of raising her niece Jo for the last 5 years after her sister abandoned her.

When Pat realises Lindy is still living in Sheet Cake he tries everything to win her back, and the grovelling from his end is so good! I loved how easily he accepted Jo and already saw him as his own niece/daughter. He wasn’t obligated to be a figure in her life but he stepped up anyway 😭

This is a really cute rom-com that has a lot of different tropes that come together to deliver this story, if you’re ok with closed door romances then give this a go! My only negative comment regarding the audiobook is that I didn’t like the male narrators voice, I just wasn’t engaging with him and had to increase the speed to get through their parts, otherwise it was entertaining overall.
