Publisher's Summary

Rediscover one of literature’s most beloved classics, richly reissued in a pivotal new audio recording. Emmy and Tony Award-nominated actor Pablo Schreiber (The Wire, Orange Is the New Black) delivers a stirring performance of Jack London’s fierce yet tender tale of loyalty between man and beast, told from the point of view of a dog.

The Call of the Wild remains one of London’s best-loved novels, often regarded as the crowning masterpiece of a writer whose enduring popularity and prolific output hold a unique place in American literature.

On its face, the novel is the story of Buck, a dog stolen from his comfortable home on a California ranch and shipped to the frozen Yukon to be a trained as a sled dog. But this exhilarating tale of a canine hero’s fight for survival is in fact a vivid depiction of the great gold rush to the Klondike in 1897. Brutal and fierce on one hand, this iconic adventure story is also a heart-warming tale of the tenderness and loyalty between humans and animals, brilliantly told from the latter’s perspective.

Narrator Schreiber, whose previous performance of Brett Easton Ellis’ American Psycho has endeared him to listeners, brings a classic American tale to the ears - and hearts - of a new generation.

Critic Reviews

"Narrator Pablo Schreiber's pacing, tone, and timbre are spot-on as he delivers this often brutal story.... Schreiber narrates with exquisite restraint.... The narration is ably done and the adventure well served." (AudioFile)

The Call of the Wild

Well written, you'll have no problem with this story being told from the dogs point of view. The narrator was excellent...in fact I really don't think anyone else could have done better.

Call of the wild

A book from the point of view of a dog. What a great idea. Although London wrote over a hundred years ago the book sounds totally modern

Narrator not as good as Samuel Griffin

This is the best version available on Audibles, but the best narration of all is performed by Sam Griffin. (He sounds like Tyrone Power.) Only available on cassette tape. Audibles should try to get a hold of it.

A book everyone should read

My late husband read this book in Italian and in English when he moved to the US. Although he loved wolves before, this made him fall madly in love with huskies. Reading this again, for me has touched me in a way it couldn’t when I read it in school. Jack London reveals Buck in an existential way that makes you feel like you are running with the wolves yourself. Pablo Schreiber’s reading draws the reader into the heart of the tale.

Thrilling and emotional

I thoroughly enjoyed this story!!! I absolutely love dogs and all animals and having a 4-month-old Husky with a big streak of wild running through him really connected me to the storyline.
I believe I will share this book and listen to it several more times.
Thank you.

Just a Shaggy Dog Story?

I always remember reading this and White Fang while still at school, which is quite a feat of memory in my case! To me these tales seemed remarkably fresh despite their age, this was after all first published in 1903. It's the tale of Buck, a domestic dog just coming of age who is dognapped and taken from the warm South to the frozen Yukon territory to serve new masters in the Klondike Gold Rush.

It's a classic animal coming of age tale but it's not a soft children's story. There is a lot of violence and some animal cruelty, it's a real tale of survival, betrayal and it even channels a christian message as Buck shows his more noble instincts.

This is an old story, but for me it was infused with the nostalgia of my schoolboy enjoyment so Pablo Schreiber's reading was a real pleasure. It really isn't just as shaggy dog story, it's much more than that, but it is also more classic than contemporary. Whether you enjoy it or not will depend on how you take to those characteristics and maybe whether or not you share my warm sense of nostalgia for it!

Brilliant story. Fantastic narrator.

This is a classic which I thought would not be to my taste as in I thought it boy's adventure stuff.
Also I only had a dim idea of it being about a dog because of book covers - but it's a stirring and gripping tale, beautifully told, and you feel completely immersed in Buck's mental and physical life, not doubting the state of mind described for one moment.

Something different

I wasn't sure if I would like this as it is so far from what I usually listen to.

It is a credit to the writing that I was so bought into Buck's journey, he certainly had an interesting (and oftentimes difficult) life.

I very much dislike the swearing!!!

Just in chapter three there were at least three or four swear words not five minutes between each other!!!I love the story of Call of The Wild this kind of story is right down my alley, but I had to turn it off!!!
This book is NOT clean, family friendly, or kid friendly for that matter!
Very disappointed!

Great read, still visually amazing.

Really enjoyed listening, one of my earliest reads, Probably my ninth read, as a child found in my pop's garage. Could not put it down then. It was my first single read. I am always left with the image of the primal howl, even when I listened to it.

One I will listen to again

I read this over 30 years ago and to listen to it was wonderful. It is a shorter story well written and the narration does it justice.
Written in a style less direct than modern novels, I still found it gripped me. The story of Buck, a domestic dog stolen and sold into a working life in Alaska. He is forced to discover the cunning, toughness and fight of his ancestors to survive, and he blooms with this awakening. Full of the struggle, humour and cruelty of the frontier life of the time, it could be a bit confronting to some. I loved it.
