Story
The Cold Creek Highway stretches close to five hundred miles through British Columbia’s rugged wilderness to the west coast. Isolated and vast, it has become a prime hunting ground for predators. For decades, young women traveling the road have gone missing. Motorists and hitchhikers, those passing through or living in one of the small towns scattered along the region, have fallen prey time and again. And no killer or abductor who has stalked the highway has ever been brought to justice.

Publisher's Summary
In the isolated estate she’s found the perfect getaway. But there’s no escaping the past in this chilling novel from the bestselling author of The Unremembered Girl.
Filmmaker Tessa Shepherd helped free a man she believed was wrongly imprisoned for murder. When he kills again, Tessa’s life is upended.
She’s reeling with guilt, her reputation destroyed. Worse, Tessa’s mother has unexpectedly passed away, and her sister, Margot, turns on her after tensions from their past escalate. Hounded by a bullying press, Tessa needs an escape. That’s when she learns of a strange inheritance bequeathed by her mother: a derelict and isolated estate known as Fallbrook. It seems like the perfect refuge.
A crumbling monument to a gruesome history, the mansion has been abandoned by all but two elderly sisters retained as caretakers. They are also guardians of all its mysteries. As the house starts revealing its dark secrets, Tessa must face her fears and right the wrongs of her past to save herself and her relationship with Margot. But nothing and no one at Fallbrook are what they seem.

creepy and suspenseful
Filmmaker Tessa Shepard helps to free a man she thinks is innocent only for him to kill upon his release and implicate her in his crime. In the midst of all the mayhem, she loses her mother and an already strained relationship with her only sibling suffers more. In an effort to avoid scrutiny, she goes to a family home that she wasn't aware of or didn't recall existing. What she and her sister didn't know was that the rundown home held many family secrets.
Can we say twists? suspense? I listened to this book on audio. Initially, I thought this was not going to grab my attention. The narration began at a slow controlled pace, but the author did not make me wait long. As Tessa's world began to crumble personally and professionally, the narration took off and began to bring the story to life.
There are two storylines at play in The Caretakers, both equally engaging and when they collide, the revelations that unfold will have you eagerly awaiting to see what's next. There are quite a few elements at play in this creepy suspense-filled story. There are familial relationships and secrets, guilt and the havoc it can wreak, murder, corruption in the legal system and much more.
The audio production was well done. Narrators Janet Metzger and Erin Mallon turned in a solid performance and aided in building the suspense with their spot-on delivery of each character.
I think those who enjoy a good creepy, suspense story will enjoy this Eliza Maxwell's work and I would recommend it.

Narrator ruined the story.......
I struggled with my review...... I honestly think the book deserves higher than I gave it, but, I had to listen to the narration. I could not get involved with the storyline because of this. Had I read the written word, I’m pretty sure I would have rated it higher. When you have to suffer through listening, you lose the point. I just wanted it over! Sorry to the author, though, she may not have been able to pick.

Story is great, narrator is grating and annoying
I was disappointed when I started this book and heard the narrator. I actively avoid books read by her. She has the most annoying voice and her variations and especially male characters are so hard to listen to. It really makes getting into the story difficult. The book was good and I really enjoyed the plot, but I recommend finding a different recording or going for the paper copy!

I have no idea what this book is about
The Tessa chapters are read way too fast and the Kitty chapters way too slow. It makes it hard to keep track of what's going on in the stories themselves because I'm so distracted. I feel like I have to either stop and change the narration speed every 5 minutes or go back to the beginning of a chapter repeatedly until I can piece together what is going on in the story. I'm halfway through my second listen and I still have no idea what this story is about.

“The CareTakers” was too confusing at times
Tessa is a film maker, documentary type. She helps a man that she’s fought for to be released from prison. She positively believes he was innocent of killing many. After she gets him out of prison, let’s just say, he was NOT INNOCENT & murdered AGAIN. Her ‘great thing’ she thought & others thought, went from popular to everyone turning against her & her life basically falls apart.
In addition, she was responsible for setting this murderer free, her mom dies! Tessa and her sister Margot haven’t spoken forever, but their mothers death brings them to speak again..BUT then in their moms will it says their mother was adopted & an estate once owned by her birth family is left to Tessa & Margot.
There is so many plots & subplots after the initial beginning..
In the estate sisters Dierdre & Kitty are living there as caretaking it.
Every other chapter is either from the present and then from the past with horrible secrets..
Unfortunately I started losing ‘The Caretakers’ as a book & reading it. There was so much going on I either wanted to stop reading all together or send it back..but I didn’t bcuz the subplots/past chapters were interesting, so I kept plodding through.
Also I didn’t even like Tessa and Margo! All they did was argue & fight over ‘something’ Margot was always acting like you ‘owe me’ attitude & I found myself yelling out “Why are you too so miserable!!”
There was just too much to get into and the confusion at times overwhelmed me too! I don’t want to give away the OMG moments..so I’ll leave it here with my review. I just couldn’t keep up!
The narration was good for the “past” chapters but it seemed like there wasn’t much differences in the voices of the present chapters. I would still recommend this book by Eliza Maxwell, if you don’t mind, past & present, subplots, etc. And I will keep reading her books! This one just had me re reading too many times!

The opposite of entertaining
I guess Gothic novels aren't my thing. Even with the speed cranked up to 1.5x, this seemed slow-paced and tedious, with flat characters and a storyline that failed to engage me.

it all makes sense....
as you go along, you start trying to put the pieces together, but some of it doesn't make sense....until you get to the final few chapters. Really good mystery, with thriller chapters.
