God has fallen and the Devil is dead. Heaven, once paradise, now lies crumbling, ruinous and infested. It is a vile nest for an ancient evil that has its sights set on humanity. Everyone has wanted their favorite book to be real, if only for a moment. Everyone has wished to meet their favorite characters, if only for a day. But be careful in that wish, for even a history laid in ink can be repaid in flesh and blood, and reality is far deadlier than fiction...especially on Addington Isle.

Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

Publisher's Summary
Some call it purgatory, others know it as the in-between, but for those poor souls who are trapped there eternally it is simply: The Carnival - macabre mockery where night is never-ending, and a sadistic creature known as the Fool rules with an iron fist.
And the Fool has one rule: No one leaves the Carnival. Ever.
Christopher, the latest arrival thrust reluctantly through the gates, is certain that he doesn't belong there, and he's damn sure he's not going to be staying. To have any chance of escaping, he must confront not only the Fool, but his own dark past.

Fun
I was expecting horror story but I personally thought it was more fun n entertaining. I mean maybe it’s just me and I have warped personality, don’t get me wrong it wasn’t a comedy or anything just more light hearted I guess. It did have some scenes that describe terrible situations and what one might picture as torture in hell. But at same time just now your regular horror story. If you like stories about adventure , purgatory, gods and titans then I definitely recommend it. I was given this audio in exchange for honest and voluntary review.

Saved by the narration.
It has been about a week or so and I'm still somewhat on the fence about this one. The story was decent enough, if not super original, but it felt rushed at times, especially at the end. In fact, I had to double-check to make sure I didn't accidentally skip a chapter near the end because it felt like there was something missing there. It was clear that this was written by an amateur writer, but I don't necessarily mean that in a bad way. In fact, I think he did a fine job; it just could've used a bit of refining here and there and perhaps a different direction and something that gives us a better idea of how this world works. I will definitely check out the sequel, though.
As far as the narration goes, I thought Graybill did a fantastic job. His voice isn't quite suited for female characters—which are almost nonexistent in this story anyway—and some of the narration could feel a little stiff at times, but he really brought life to the characters. His portrayal of The Fool was particularly noteworthy and reminded me a lot of Mark Hammill's voice work. It doesn't look like most of the other books he has narrated would be of much interest to me, but I'm going to keep an eye out for him in the future.
Overall, I'd say this was a worthwhile endeavor. To be honest, I probably never would've given it a chance if it weren't for the free code I was given, but I'm glad I gave it a listen.

A Good Premise, But Poorly Executed
The idea of this story is a fun one. It has all the makings of something truly gripping and entertaining. Unfortunately, the author chose to skimp on building the characters and focused more on hitting specific scenes that in the end were poorly executed.
The main character Christopher is a cardboard cut out of a protagonist whose sole motivation stems from his father's love of carnivals. He's dragged by the nose, or stumbles through illogical decisions to reach and ending that could have been carried out by any one of the other characters.
The best character in the story is the antagonist, and he is left to meager ideas, and guesses as to his motivation by secondary characters, the protagonist barely scratches what was supposed to be his foil's surface.
In the end it's a jarring, jaunty path from a forced beginning to an ending that is unsatisfying.

Fun dark quick read
This is an odd book, and there are just a few people I would recommend it to, but those people will love it. The types of people who will like this are those that like having the personification of Death. But probably not people who are overly religious.
I enjoyed the story and the various situations and solutions, and loved the way that Christopher Graybill brought the characters to life (even Death).
For the right person, this is an enjoyable quick listen

Entertaining Tale of the Afterlife
This is an interesting tale of the afterlife wherein our main character finds himself dead and ferried along to a macabre view of purgatory (the carnival of night) by the daughter of death. There's some nods to Greek mythology but the great triumph at hand is the creepiness of the carnival and the fact that so much world building is done in a story of this length. It's entertaining and has a solid ending as well.

Not the Afterlife I expected
I received a free audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
I quite enjoyed this dark and surprising story that started out ostensibly about the Christian afterlife and turned into—an entirely different kind of afterlife. I don’t want to spoil the surprise, but the twist is delicious, even amid throngs of bones and entrails. I also adored the end reveal of Our Young Hero, and hope there is a sequel. Well done!

Average afterlife story
I was gripped by the first few paragraphs, it gave so much promise but it became stale in the middle and fell flat in the end with a predictable finish.
Quite a short listen which I liked and chapterised so easy to know when to stop listening and where to pick up.
Good English accent from the US performer among other characters, well read and easy on the ear.
