Letdown ending to a fun series

I thoroughly enjoyed the first three books in this series so much that I downloaded and listened to them all back to back in a matter of about a week. The characters were endearing (though a bit preachy) and the story was action packed and fun.

The final book was an emotional letdown. The entire story consisted of tying up loose ends. My biggest criticism to the series is that the “big bad” regent plot line lacked some grit but once it was wrapped up, as another reviewer put it, 3/4 of the book was essentially “and they all lived happily ever after” - borderline fanfic. I wish it was a trilogy and the first quarter of the last book was included in the third. Honestly, I expect the publisher wanted a 4 book series and she had to draw out the ending for the last book.

That said, the first three books were solid enough that I would definitely give this author another try and I am glad I listened to this series. While the last book was meh, series as a whole is a 4/5.

Dull ending to a great series

I was really excited to get pulled into this 4 book series and was highly disappointed with this final book's direction. After a pretty exciting opening, the book transpired into the dull ins and outs of selecting servants, picking a hairstyle, and sewing dresses (yawn). I felt like I easily could have skipped the middle of the book and arrived at the climax of the series without missing anything. She basically should have concluded with "and they lived happily ever after." Disappointing.

Glorious!

Love the whole series, can’t recommend it highly enough. I purchased the trade paperbacks as well after listening to the audiobooks, as I got hooked and wanted to delve into the story details. The series is complete - all four were written and edited together. The coordination and sense of completion is better than average as a result, yet the books maintain their separate identities. My favorite is book two, Queen of the Raiders.

I’ve read some reviews complaining about the narrator on the audiobooks. They boil down to the slow speed at which she reads a single character who appears infrequently and is only in the first book. I find this a minor aggravation at worst, and she imbues a tremendous amount of love into the characters otherwise that is charming and true to the books.

Highly recommended!

Best fantasy series EVER

I’ve read a lot of fantasy and this has to be the best one. The narration is incredible. I flew through it but also didn’t want it to end. Amazing story.

Outstanding!!!!

I listen to a lot of audiobooks. And average about 5 or 6A month someone this series is outstanding in every way. It starts out a little slow but the story telling is excellent and after your halfway through the 1st novel you're caught up and you'll not look back explain! Outstanding storytelling and performance.

Great series

Loved the book, narrator has a wide range of voices, however the regional accents varied sounding from Scotland to Midwestern US and everything in between. Made it odd.

Did not disappoint

If you enjoyed the first three books in the series, then you will enjoy the final segment without being too predictable. Best new fantasy series I’ve read in a while. I hope the author writes more! Maybe a spin-off about the catamounts!

Magnificent feminist fantasy series

I love these books so much. They brought me great joy in a difficult time. And Imogen church’s performance was extraordinary as she brought so many characters to life in such distinct clarity.

Great Series, Last Book was a bit slow.

This was one of my favorite series. This final book was predictable and until the two protagonists are reunited, practically nothing happened. From there until the end of the book, the author showed again how she can be a great writer. Narrator did a good job with her difficulties with male voices not really being noticeable by this book.

Fantastic

An epic story from start to finish ! Following a weir queen from childhood to childhood , love & war , losses & triumphs , magic & intrigue - not many books can make me tear up , but this book , the end of the series was , in my best Vinnie Jones “emotional” , it’s like the last 3 chapters of lord of the rings , but an entire book at the end of a series !

Amazing series

This was a fabulous conclusion to a captivating series, I loved the way the author brought the struggle of fixing a nations problems after war to this story. It made it more believable that cerulia didn't just step in and be queen with no problems. All the loose ends were tied up and I loved every second of this series.
I feel sad now its finished I loved the characters so much. Will definitely look out for more by this author in the future, this series has reawakened my love for fantasy and I still can't belive this was her first series. A well written and wonderful story highly recommended to everyone.
