Story
As children, Sam and Elli were two halves of a perfect whole: gorgeous identical twins whose parents sometimes couldn’t even tell them apart. They fell asleep to the sound of each other’s breath at night, holding hands in the dark. And once Hollywood discovered them, they became B-list child TV stars, often inhabiting the same role. But as adults, their lives have splintered. After leaving acting, Elli reinvented herself as the perfect homemaker: married to a real estate lawyer, living in a house just blocks from the beach.

Story
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results. But like science, life is unpredictable.

Publisher's Summary
"Miller triumphs...THE CHANGE is that rare treat: a suspenseful story with great pacing, memorable characters, and an engaging voice. Fantastic in every way, this fierce anthem against misogyny is a smash."—Publishers Weekly (starred review)
Big Little Lies meets The Witches of Eastwick—a gloriously entertaining and knife-sharp feminist revenge fantasy about three women whose midlife crisis brings unexpected new powers—putting them on a collision course with the evil that lurks in their wealthy beach town.
In the Long Island oceanfront community of Mattauk, three different women discover that midlife changes bring a whole new type of empowerment…
After Nessa James’s husband dies and her twin daughters leave for college, she’s left all alone in a trim white house not far from the ocean. In the quiet of her late forties, the former nurse begins to hear voices. It doesn’t take long for Nessa to realize that the voices calling out to her belong to the dead—a gift she’s inherited from her grandmother, which comes with special responsibilities.
On the cusp of 50, suave advertising director Harriett Osborne has just witnessed the implosion of her lucrative career and her marriage. She hasn’t left her house in months, and from the outside, it appears as if she and her garden have both gone to seed. But Harriet’s life is far from over—in fact, she’s undergone a stunning and very welcome metamorphosis.
Ambitious former executive Jo Levison has spent thirty long years at war with her body. The free-floating rage and hot flashes that arrive with the beginning of menopause feel like the very last straw—until she realizes she has the ability to channel them, and finally comes into her power.
Guided by voices only Nessa can hear, the trio of women discover a teenage girl whose body was abandoned beside a remote beach. The police have written the victim off as a drug-addicted sex worker, but the women refuse to buy into the official narrative. Their investigation into the girl’s murder leads to more bodies, and to the town’s most exclusive and isolated enclave, a world of stupendous wealth where the rules don’t apply. With their newfound powers, Jo, Nessa, and Harriet will take matters into their own hands…

Great book until you realize what it’s about
Spoiler… I really liked the first 10 or so hours of this book, that is, until I realized that the final part of the plot is basically a fictional rendition of the Jeffrey Epstein scandal (Leonard is Epstein and his “long term” girlfriend, Claude, is Ghislaine Maxwell). It just didn’t really fit with where I thought the story was going and a fictional version of the scandal is not something I would have chosen to read (had I known). The last four hours just ruined it for me. Otherwise, the performance was great!

How can we really win?
While I enjoyed the book and Ms. Miller's writing style. I couldn't help but be frustrated by a story that only gave hope in winning the battle against powerful men who sexually abuse, hurt, and murder young women if women have super powers. So how do we really win this battle?

This book is amazing. If you want to read about strong, 40 something women, this is the book. This story reminds me of Big Little Lies, so if you enjoyed that you will love this. Also, this needs to be made into a series like Big Little Lies. I could not put this book down.

Chilling but empowering
I can see this as a movie remake soon. There are many twists and turns and ultimately there is a deeper level of enchantment going on when a missing girls body turns up and it brings a few small town women together to follow their calling and leverage their women’s intuition to help solve what is happening on Culls point.
I really enjoyed this book and recommend it!
