Publisher's Summary

The assassins of Barry Eisler’s #1 bestseller The Killer Collective are back - and this time, it’s chaos.

Assistant US Attorney Alondra Diaz hates traffickers. And she’s determined to put one of America’s most powerful financiers, Andrew Schrader, in prison forever for his crimes against children.

But Schrader has videos implicating some of the most powerful members of the US national security state. To eliminate Diaz, the powers that be bring in a contractor: Marvin Manus, an implacable assassin whose skills have been forged in intelligence, the military, and the hardest prisons.

Enter former Marine sniper Dox and black-ops veteran Daniel Larison with an unusual assignment: not to kill Diaz, but to keep her alive.

A lot of players are determined to acquire the videos and the blackmail power they represent. But with Seattle sex-crimes detective Livia Lone, “natural causes” killer John Rain, and ex-Mossad honey-trap specialist Delilah, the good guys might just have a chance.

They’re not going to play by anyone else’s rules. They’re not going to play by any rules at all. They want a different kind of fight. The chaos kind.

Critic Reviews

“The author himself narrates a fantasy-thriller that reunites a team of snipers, detectives, and assassins.… Eisler's story — with its colorful cast of characters, pulse-pounding action, and snappy dialogue — is fantastic in audio form. Fans of the first book will be delighted, and those who are unfamiliar will be pulled in by the audiobook's breakneck pacing and blockbuster movie feel.” (AudioFile Magazine)

“Another high-fatality, high-spirited revenge fantasy.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Eisler juggles the complicated plot and large cast, imbuing his diverse characters with robust backstory and emotional motivation.” (Publishers Weekly)

Eisler writes with the best...

...and yet he doesn’t get the attention he deserves. Personally, I don’t understand why not. This is an EXCELLENT book. I see Wayne (Matthews, NC) has beat me to a review so I will defer and agree.
I always look forward to and enjoy Eisler’s books and this one did not disappoint. His narration is flawless.
This book has my VERY HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

All members of the killer collective are back!

Author Barry Eisler brings back all of his protagonists except Ben Treven for this marvelous suspense, political, and action thriller. The Chaos Kind is really Book 2 in The Killer Collective series. The two novels have very different plots but the same protagonist group. The publisher's summary sets up The Chaos Kind well so I have nothing to add. As usual Barry Eisler narrates his own novels and he does so superbly.

Sorry Mr Eisler

Narration spoils what would be a good read.
I liked Mr Eisler's novels (I have print versions of most all of them and I listened to Audio versions before and I persevered with the audio books after he chose to read his own books years ago)
I feel bad scoring low on the Story...I did not finish the book.... but every character just sounded like Barry reading his book so I gave up. Normally I would return a book like this ... but I left it in my library.
I appreciate lots of folks don't mind the narration but I am not one of them. So no more Eisler for me.

Chaos in plot and characters

Had a blast listening, but I think those new to the author will be lost among the ever expanding characters and crossovers. This book is best read after reading books 1-7 of the John Rain series (or at least
books 2 & 7), Livia Lone books 2 & 3, and The God’s Eye View.

On the upside, compared to the series feeding into it, this book features more action, shifting alliances, and crazy interactions between the various series’ MCs (the latter being my favorite feature).
The sex scenes are tamer and the author’s use of “turtling” and “adrenaline dump” don’t appear as often as in his other books.

On the downside, I’m rather fatigued by the over-use of sex-crimes against women/children as the major plot driver. I mean really, how many senators, generals, and powerbrokers can there be in a horrific conspiracy of abuse? It feels like the well is never ending and there are no good people at the top of anything (unless of course, they’re tied to our extended cast).

Creating An Action Family

It almost feels like this story is Rain's "Swan Song", but it shouldn't be. Livia's "training" is still to be done and the story of that with Dox and Dash partaking in at least some of it and Delilah adding to it, surrounded by another team venture would be literary gold in my humble opinion. Eisler reading his own work is soooo good, if for no other reason than the pacing and pronunciation of words anyone else would stumble over. The story itself is intense, action-filled and the creation of family Dynamics at their best. Dox and Manus are becoming my absolute favorite characters, soooo much heart. So when is the next one coming out...very soon I hope!?!

Quick paced with a touch of humor

This book is fast moving, sometimes furious, sometimes touching, and sometimes laugh out loud funny. This is the perfection in a novel, to me. The characters were vivid in my mind and the author kindled a hope that I get to read many, many more of his books.

Fast; investing plots, wonderful narrantion

This is one of the best John Raine books. I think Barry Eiseler is one of the most under rated authors. His books are just flat out the best. His Narration is right up their with the best guys and gals.. Get the book!

Eisler does it again.

Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2021
Barry Eisler doesn’t disappoint in his continuation of his “Killer Collective” group of characters ... Fast paced from the start, in“The Chaos Kind” Eisler does a great job of continuing and expanding the depth of his characters. If you haven’t read any of Barry’s books, I would highly recommend starting with his first in the series: Rain Fall/A Clean Kill in Tokyo, as his characters develop and expand continuously. The diversity of the subject matter and characters is compelling as the major news headlines of the day. The comradeship of his band of killers, heroes, anti heroes pulls you in from the start.
If you’re a fan of espionage, government spying, cia assassins, mixed with economic, cultural, and international controversial topics of the day, with a unforgettable cast of characters that come to be all to human with all aspects that life offers, tragedy, romance, love , loss, death and not least of all ((through at least one major character) humor.
His references to movies and books throughout is also fun.
Highly recommend.

The series is becoming a cartoon

I enjoyed the first few in the series. However Sadly, the Rain series is devolving into a cartoonish, buddy, super-hero series. Disappointing.

Brilliant series of books

Excellent writing, and brilliantly narrated by the author himself. Great characters, and storyline. Have read the entire series now, and look forward to the next book.

Great stuff.

Eisler fans will not be disappointed. Not will new listeners who will I hope enjoy the superb narration by the author (rivalled only by R.C.Bray to my mind). However I would recommend starting much earlier in the John Rain and Livia Lone series' otherwise you will miss out on all of the character development and relationships between the recurring characters.
The developing mutual support group is expanded further in this book! with the customary violent action!
Highly recommended for all thriller fans - particularly the " previously misguided clandestine operator(s)is now doing mostly good in support of the good guys with burgeoning camaraderie " sub- genre.

Very good, not excellent

I’m a huge fan of Eisler but this isn’t his best work. Felt a little rushed and incomplete and the story didn't unfold with the tension it usually does. Still definitely worth a read though.
