For many of us, listening is simply something we do on autopilot. We hear just enough of what others say to get our work done, maintain friendships, and be polite with our neighbors. But we miss crucial opportunities to go deeper - to give and receive honest feedback, to make connections that will endure for the long haul, and to discover who people truly are at their core. Fortunately, listening can be improved - and Ximena Vengoechea can show you how.

What hidden skill links successful people in all walks of life? What helps them make smart decisions? The answer is surprisingly simple: They know how to ask the right questions at the right time. Questions help us break down barriers, discover secrets, solve puzzles, and imagine new ways of doing things. But few of us know how to question in a methodical way. We think we know what meditation is - especially in an era when "mindfulness" has improbably rocketed into the mainstream. Millions of people around the world have taken up a formal mindfulness meditation practice as part of their everyday lives. But there's no hard-and-fast rule that says you have to meditate in a certain way, in a particular place, or following a specific tradition. So what is meditation anyway? And why might it be worth trying? Or nurturing further if you already have practice?

Most of what we know about how ideas spread comes from best-selling authors who give us a compelling picture of a world, in which "influencers" are king, "sticky" ideas "go viral", and good behavior is "nudged" forward. The problem is that the world they describe is a world where information spreads, but beliefs and behaviors stay the same. When it comes to lasting change in what we think or the way we live, the dynamics are different: beliefs and behaviors are not transmitted from person to person in the simple way that a virus is.

Story
Overthinking isn't a personality trait. It's the sneakiest form of fear. It steals time, creativity, and goals. It's the most expensive, least productive thing companies invest in without even knowing it. And it's an epidemic. When New York Times best-selling author Jon Acuff changed his life by transforming his overthinking, he wondered if other people might benefit from what he discovered. He commissioned a research study to ask 10,000 people if they struggle with overthinking too, and 99.5 percent said, "Yes!"

Publisher's Summary
What if charisma could be taught?
For the first time, science and technology have taken charisma apart, figured it out, and turned it into an applied science: In controlled laboratory experiments, researchers could raise or lower people's level of charisma as if they were turning a dial.
What you'll find here is practical magic: unique knowledge, drawn from a variety of sciences, revealing what charisma really is and how it works. You'll get both the insights and the techniques you need to apply this knowledge. The world will become your lab and every person you meet a chance to experiment.
The Charisma Myth is a mix of fun stories, sound science, and practical tools. Cabane takes a hard scientific approach to a heretofore mystical topic, covering what charisma actually is, how it is learned, what its side effects are, and how to handle them.

This book was a Paradigm Shift for me. Am an introvert entrepreneur, so you can imagine why I wanted to learn about being charismatic.
and the book contained WAY more than what I imagined it to be.
I never would've thought that charisma starts from within. Actually, the techniques beautifully yet concisely described in this book made an immediate profound impact on my own interactions. heck one of the techniques ACTUALLY made me tear up from relief (Responsibility Transfer)
it's not a short book, I really wished it would be double its length!

My absolute favorite self development book
It's funny that I told people I was studying Charisma and they found it funny that you could study it, proving the point of the title: the myth that people are whether born charismatic or not.
Not long after started listening to The Charisma Myth, I knew charisma was going to be my best tool in life so far. I was born already somewhat charismatic but this book still provides with dense wisdom and insights that otherwise would take me too long to realize, and pinpoints the exercises curated after years of expertise.
Learning charisma is really close to learning to be a better person, a better you. My life has already started to change, and I'm enjoying every minute of the journey.

I am not being harsh and i really wanted this to be a good book. But at one point the author goes on and on about how you should close the window if its distracting you, feel comfortable - temperature of the room! The book of full of anecdotes like this. Any additional comments?
You need to have a workbook to complete some of the exercises. In the audiobook when they refer to tables or diagrams it can get frustrating not knowing what is being referenced.

Handy Toolbox for executives
Olivia Fox Cabane has done a great job in assembling a set of practical tools for anyone who wants to adjust or build their personal impact, their charisma.
The audiobook is narrated by the author and she delivers her words with warmth and power. The numerous anecdotes work well to add both authority and authenticity; They help out the listener feel how each piece of advice would work.

I would recommend this as a great manual because it delivers what it promises.
However, I found some areas as too self-centred and less evolved for humans, to my taste.

Excellent, if excessive at times.
Applied psychology-type sections excellent but found some of the "be the big gorilla" advice somewhat extreme. I'd like to be more charismatic, yes, but don't agree that should involve me intimidating people on the pavement! That said, that was a small excerpt from an otherwise excellent listen.

Fantastic content that needs to be re-recorded due to poor editing
The content is brilliant. Inspiring and super helpful. Already I’ve noticed a significant shift in how others relate to me, and in how much more confident I feel. I’m smiling at everyone now, and enjoying beautiful eye contact. Life changing.
The performance was sub-par though, and edited very poorly. There were many obvious mid sentence edits which made it sound disjointed throughout. There were also countless double breath due to poor editing, making it feel unnatural. It made it difficult to listen to and I just had to push through. Thankfully the content was enough to keep me going.
Given this is such a popular book, I can’t see why the publishers don’t re-record it so that it matches the professional standard expected on Audible.

Terrible narration.
Whilst the book does contain some useful information and I did learn a few things there are two problems with this audiobook. Firstly the narration is horrendous, annoying and sounds like a computer. The information therein is somewhat interesting, but could be found elsewhere in a far more concise manner. But the narration is so bad that you can’t concentrate for too long.

I really enjoyed listening to this and will listen to it a few more times as it was a lot to take in. Would benefit from an accompanying pdf with the practice exercises. I started trying some out before I got to the end of the book and was amazed at how some little changes made a big difference. What you get out of it will depend on how natural you are at this already and how much you can still learn.
