Story
In the year 2030 the Maunder Minimum, a period of solar inactivity, will cause a mini-ice age like it did between the years 1645 and 1710. When it does, Bishop will have to save her not only from the effects of severe weather but also from man himself. Maeve Tildon and her son Ben live alone in the rural town of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. This new stand-alone survival thriller thrusts the most dynamic city on Earth, New York, into darkness as North America is bludgeoned by the sun's ferocity. Scientists promised a beautiful aurora providing the city that never sleeps with magnificent hues of blue and green. For three days, New Yorkers took to the streets, parks, and rooftops to enjoy the awe-inspiring spectacle. As the power grid failed, the city of New York collapsed with remarkable speed. The thin veneer of civilization was laid bare as man fought one another for survival.

First-rate book
I really liked listening to this story. The characters are great, and I'm hooked on finding how it turns out for them. I recommend this book. Now for the obligatorily: This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review. And I'm damn glad A.R. Shaw let me have the Audio form of this book. Since I can't justify the expense of getting the audio format for all in the series, I'm off to Amazon to get the Kindle versions. :)

Mixed bag of good and bad.
Once past the jerky beginning story finds its feet and moves at a decent pace.
Needs a better editor/sounding board.
15yo girls are written like they are 11yo waifs most of the time.
5yo boy written like he should be 12+
Protagonist is borderline too stupid/naive to survive in the environment portrayed *I'll chalk it up to luck and just roll with it.
It's not horrible, but the author could have used some constructive guidance in the early drafts.
Performance is adequate.

To say the least,
I was shocked when the book ended. I was so into it, I didn't even realize it was about to end. I was listening to the audio version. Needless to say, my next read will be China Pandemic book two. I love survival stories, and this one is certainly not run of the mill. It has everything you could want; good guys, bad guys, hunting, fishing, romance, thankfully kept to a minimum, and realism.

Predictable, un-entertaining and returned.
Very basic story that makes no sense, AT ALL! Not even worth a free credit. I made it through five chapters waiting for a reason to not return the selection. The most interesting story line ended after a sick nother leaves her kid with the main character. When she died so did the story.

China Pandemic real or fiction
A bird flu has ravaged the earth, only 2% of the population has lived. Graham has no family left and decides to he for his families cabin in the woods. On the way he picks up a few stragglers and they become his new family. When Graham and one of the girls run into some preppers in a town on a restocking mission they give him a boy to take care of as well since the preppers have not been exposed to the flu they do not know who is susceptible and who is not so they can not keep the boy. What Graham does not know is who the preppers are led by and how much the preppers are helping Graham and his new family, especially when the bad guys come.
This was a great story I would love to hear more and someday I might get to. But it is really good and narrator Darriel Driml really brought it to life. I really liked the story line and the characters they worked well together, but you do need to remember this is fiction so what always works may not always be real, but still a great story.

Good beginning
It was advertised as a post-apocalyptic medical thriller. It was interesting to read about a purposeful community of preppers. I like the characters and yes, it was somewhat slow at times, but I liked the time that was devoted to story development. I am definitely reading the rest of the series!

Very very very disappointed with this book.
How this book made it to publication and then to audio book I will never know much less understand.
A five year old boy is given to a survivor of the pandemic and they go to hide for the winter in a cabin. That sentence takes eight chapters in the book. Two dogs get killed as the main action. The rest of the time is the dilemma of which bikes they will take, one is pink not a good colour for a boy even during a pandemic. That is the level of this literature (and I call it literature to be sarcastic).
Then you have the narrator; at first I thought he was terrible, then I realized that it was the sound of a man having his spirit crushed by a horrible task.
The editors and producers of this book should be ashamed to sell something so below standard,
This is my first one star in 12 years.

great read
great read with a great plot and very 3d characters that the writer let's us attach too. Didn't want to put the book down due to anticipations. Unlike most books and I listen to a lot on audio, 2 things let this down. one was the voice narrator who had a fairly flat tone throughout and seemed to lack intonation where you knew characters would have had it and it often ruined it a little for me. it ruined the characters at times and their effect. The writer who had been doing g so well let us down at times making reference to thoughts of characters which they would never have known. Graham would not have known what had happened before he arrived and the writer causes the reader to lose faith and say HEY HOW WOULD HE HAVE KNOWN THAT! this happened often and throughout. The ending was a real diapsapponyment as it jumped and skipped scenes that the reader wanted to access. as if the ending was suddenly rushed. this was a real let down at the end and out me off buying through next book but who knows.

A Surprise Find
I really enjoyed listening to this story. I enjoyed the characters - and was pleased for a change that these were shoot instantly people. As a semi prepper myself I could relate to the people and marvel at their preparations.
I like that the preppers looked out for Grams group and then when... well, you’ll have to listen to it yourself.
The virus, I did feel that it’s similar to the here and now but it seemed like it was fast acting.
