The No Compromise Truth
- By BILLY HAYNES on 05-25-15
Publisher's Summary
Here is the updated and expanded edition of the best seller that changed millions of lives.
The science is clear. The results are unmistakable.
You can dramatically reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes just by changing your diet.
More than 30 years ago, nutrition researcher T. Colin Campbell and his team at Cornell University, in partnership with teams in China and England, embarked upon the most comprehensive study ever undertaken of the relationship between diet and the risk of developing disease. What they found, when combined with findings in Campbell's laboratory, opened their eyes to the dangers of a diet high in animal protein and the unparalleled health benefits of a whole foods, plant-based diet.
In 2005, T. Colin Campbell and his son Thomas M. Campbell, now a physician, shared those findings with the world in The China Study, hailed as one of the most important books about diet and health ever written.
This heavily expanded edition of their groundbreaking book features brand-new content, including the latest undeniable evidence of the power of a plant-based diet, plus updated information about the changing medical system and how patients can benefit from a surging interest in plant-based nutrition.
The China Study: Revised and Expanded Edition presents a clear and concise message of hope as it dispels a multitude of health myths and misinformation. The basic message is clear. The key to a long, healthy life lies in three things: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
The new information includes the following:
- Updated research on heart disease, obesity, diabetes, cancer, autoimmune disease, and other diseases
- Updated supplementation recommendations
- A new chapter about the media's coverage, or lack of coverage, of plant-based diet research

We've Been Lied To... Again.
Where does The China Study, Revised and Expanded Edition rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is the best audio book that I have ever listened to.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The China Study, Revised and Expanded Edition?
The connections between the food industry, lobbyist, government officials and marketing executives all joined together to perpetrate a fraud on the American people known as the American Diet as the ideal lifestyle. The aforementioned do so for nothing more that the pursuit of profit. It is downright criminal that a host of diseases may be avoided by a healthy WFPB diet, but people are steered into the opposite direction. Why do the doctors choose to be so ignorant in the field of nutrition? Most Doctors who are driven by profit are complacent in this debacle. I watched the video forks over knives and a hospital administrator stated on camera, in short, that they need unhealthy people to maintain a profit. What???? Doctors will suggest a pill or a surgery before telling a patient about the benefits of a WFPB diet as there is no upside is buying their vacation homes if people ate the correct diet. That is akin to taking your car to a mechanic and instead of repairing the problem, he provides a temporary solution which will ultimately lead to you going back to him for a more expensive band aid. The process continues with our health until you are in a hospice. You are no longer a person, but rather a room and bed number.
Which scene was your favorite?
Learning that the food industry sponsors the programs in the medical schools regarding nutrition was absolutely shocking. The medical students are so beholden to the people who pay their way that it is ingrained in them to recommend medication over natural remedies such as the WFPB diet. They don't treat their family this way so why do they treat their patients this way? This is like the mafia teaching a racketeering class in law school to show the students where they can make money from it.
The truth was revealed. I never thought that the food/pharmaceutical industry as being more powerful than the national rifle association, but it is. It was easy to understand that the politicians, regardless of party affiliation, are more about collecting donations than actually serving the people they represent. Put a better way, the politicians bend towards the will of the lobbyist. Also, I must speak to the medical studies that are paid for by the food industry. What a complete joke.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Listening to this book made me angry in that I had no idea about the benefits and extent of healthy eating. I was caught up in the propaganda, the lies, the deceit, the trickery. It is so easy to lean towards unhealthy eating. I mentioned this book to friends and they thought it was crazy to put down the burger, dairy products or the pig - this was part of the indoctrination over many generations and many lies that were thought of as the truth. My friends were like, something has go to kill you;. This is crazy. People are killing themselves and doing nothing more than benefiting the food/ pharmaceutical/ medical industry in the process. It is akin to learning that there is no Santa Claus with regard to what we eat daily.
Any additional comments?
My mother has diabetes and had to undergo two leg amputations. For those of you who never had to watch a loved one suffer through this ordeal, you are blessed. The operations cost more than 150,000. It makes me extremely upset that this all could have been avoided with a whole food plant based diet. We didn't know any better and her doctors kept pushing different medications and doses. What my family has gone through during this process is nothing short of heart wrenching. This book struck a true emotional code for me. I underwent a WFPB diet and lost 30 pounds in a couple of months. I feel better than I have ever felt before... This book was the gateway and I am still doing research to learn more. I like the fact that the book laid out the facts, but stop short of telling you what to eat. My wife kept asking, so what do we eat and you know they treat the plants and vegetables are treated with pesticides. My response was that I would gladly eat something that may contain pesticides before ordering a bacon, egg and cheese on a roll with salt, pepper and ketchup. My diet has completely changed. More importantly, I have completely changed... for the better.

I thought this was some vegan scare trap at first.
I was extremely skeptical before I actually got this book and I think there are a couple paradigms that are failed to be kept in mind when people read this that he doesn't nessesarily discuss in detail but are huge components that I inferred from the facts presented.
1. Food is Medicine. When you hear about the positive effects from the WFPD diet that he maps out, remember that these foods have been listed to for their huge health benefits. Look into Ayurvedic Medicine if you want to see what I mean, it's a whole practice created around sustaining people that western medicine couldn't help.
2. Magnesium and Potassium intake are huge based on what I can see. I am a keto guy personally and with the diet presented, It balances electrolytes and sets you up for health success and, I feel, is part of the reason that this diet is so effective for the wide arrange of diseases it corrects.
3. The saturated fats he lists in this book are typically derived from meat or cow milk products. I do not think it is fair to villainize saturated fats, when a lot of natural health providers and studies show the basis of a lot of our fat dysfunction is caused by inflammatory markers of overabundance of Omega 6 in ratio with Omega 3.

Must Read for Health
I didn't want to read "another diet book." I could literally open a diet book store with all the books I have bought about that subject. But a friend shoved this book into my hands and said I must read it, and so after letting it sit by my bedside for several weeks, I looked to see if I could get it on Audible, and sure enough it was here. I started reading and listening simultaneously . She told me it would change my life, and so it did.
It is not a diet book so much as a treatise on what different foods do for us, or do TO us. It came at the right time for me as I had taken an unexplainable hiatus from pretty much a lifelong habit of eating healthy and my health was starting to suffer.
It gets a little technical in parts but frankly, I've read so many books about food and nutrition that I could cut through all that pretty fast.
So here I am, eating better than I ever have, and planning on doing it for the rest of my life. I don't have that many years left, being as they say, a Senior Citizen, but I don't want to live even one of my remaining days sick. This is the only book I've read on the subject that makes complete sense to me. Dr. Campbell summed up how to do it on one page. It is so easy to follow. If everyone would eat this way and get adequate exercise, illness would be radically reduced on this planet.

A Must Read
This book is one of the best books I have ever read on nutrition and health. It is completely unbiassed in its approach and has studies to back up all of its findings. It reinforced and expanded on much of what I already knew about how we are manipulated by the food and pharmaceutical industries. We cannot rely on even the government to inform us honestly about what is good for us and bad for us. We must educate ourselves if we want to live a long and healthy and happy life. Here's to all of you who, not only read this book but also implement and follow it's guidelines. May you live a long and happy and healthy life.

Not good. really outdated information. This books is not about Nutrition science but talks about how messed up western diet is by comparing to Eastern diet, how messed up US food industry is, how messed up US medical industry is, and indirectly praises Veganism. So basically it says eat less or 0 animal products but eat more or only veggies is good for you.

Life style change
I watched forks over knives a couple weeks ago and this book was mentioned. This book changed my life. Our family have completely overhauled the way we look at food and what we eat. Guess what, it was easy.

Simple message, clearly put
A simple message, clearly put. Fair bit of repetition, however with enough variation on the theme to keep you interested. I will surprised that I was able to listen to almost all the book without feeling bored. Only lost interest towards the end of a book where it dealt with the idiosyncrasies of the American governmental system; being a non-American I didn’t find that totally relevant to me.Subject is dealt with pretty technically but explained clearly for the non-experts. In all, compelling enough for me to make significant changes to my diet. Job done.

Finally someone with weight behind his words!
It feels like I was searching for this book for 16 years, I have read books upon books, one more contradictory and confusing than the other. Now I finally have answers to the ever confusing "diet" debate.

“Must know” information about nutrition’s impacts on health
Describes extensive evidence that a plant based whole whole foods diet can drastically reduce the likelihood of many major illnesses, such as cancer and heart disease. It also explains why this information hasn’t had much influence even though it has been available for some time.

Very detailed and clearly explained
I found that the level in which the data was explained meant that whether you are a nutrition expert or a layperson the content and topics were relevant and clear.
How has this been kept under wraps for so long? Especially as there are so many high protein diets out there.

Truly, a must read!
I have been vegetarian for nearly 40 years but have always felt that the leap to being vegan was a step too far. This carefully researched, well written and well read book has provided the very nudge in that direction that I needed. It all seems to be a complete non-brainer to me! Please, at least listen to what this very impressive man has to say, before making up your mind about your future diet!

Loved it! Will listen to it again.
If you could sum up The China Study, Revised and Expanded Edition in three words, what would they be?
Startling research results
What was one of the most memorable moments of The China Study, Revised and Expanded Edition?
I'm amazed by the research results gathered from so many reputable research organisations and that this has not been more widely disseminated to the public and, more surprisingly, that the results have not made it into public policy after so very long.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It's a long book so I couldn't listen to it all in one sitting but I was very eager to get back to it each time.
Any additional comments?
Due to the heavy focus on research results, it's not the kind of book I would have the patience to trudge through reading, but I thoroughly enjoyed it as an audio book.

Monotonous
The study was interesting but I couldn’t handle the monotonous tone of the reader. I couldn’t bear to listen to him.

Best suited as a hardcopy or companion to hardcopy
A lot of data referenced, which might be useful to students, but some studies are too outdated to be included as references; even though the content is engaging and thought provoking. The narration is on point most of the way, sounding interested and understanding of the material.
A strange title too, given that the China study itself comprises a small part of the information - but it is defining in the theme of the overall text.
As a former student of Nutritional Science, I find it a good book on a personal level, and can understand the author's frustration; but it does get a little long in the tooth and sounds like an epic whinge a lot of the time from about half way through as the Author reflects on his own history with the subject matter. It's catching - and you might feel depressed, or angry or just as frustrated as the Author a lot of the time. Not a good bedtime listen.
A hard copy would be better, making skipping to or looking up what you want to get to easier.
If you are considering a change in diet away from animal proteins, this is an excellent reference and starting point from an author who has researched and formulated methods of validating/quantifying research to be implemented on an International scale; making it an invaluable personal reference if you are inclined towards the subject matter (mainly, not eating Animal Proteins).
I'd like to rate it higher, but it's just not engaging material for an audiobook, and the Author has decades of gripe to get through, this volume being just one episode.

Makes gigantic assumptions
This book is biased toward veganism and cherry picks the science.
I was very interested in this book, but it didn't answer the fundamental question about plant proteins exerting the same effects that where being exonerated. In fact it misled me to the appendix by suggesting it would, and then didn't. It also intentionally misled the results by stating facts which are unfounded.
Its a real shame, because I was so interested and I was very hooked after the first chapter, there were some promising and revealing study results that were well cited, but the author fell down a hole trying to promote his ideology. Returned.

Dense but worth it
This book was amazing and consolidated a lot of things that I had learnt at university as well as from independent research.
Some of the science/jargon in this book can be quite intimidating! But once you source check a few references you gain a trust in what goes over your head and the intentions of the author.
I really enjoyed learning about the environment in which this information exists and the difficulties it has in being perpetrated.

A wonderful textbook for every child in the world. Implementing the findings, however, would be a whole new book.
