No kissing. No cuddling. No blah, blah, blah. He wrote the rules onto our skin - every ink stroke tragically smeared by the lines we’d crossed. He claimed it was the only way we could be together - the only way we wouldn’t destroy our families. But there was an exception to his rules - one he never saw coming. All I needed was opportunity and a sunburn. The girl who played by his rules is gone. This girl...is not his “friend”.

Story
A brilliant surgeon. A master sculptor. The media touted Dr. Potter as a savior dressed in a crisp suit. I think he’s a vicious madman of jerk-sized proportions. But fate is a wicked tease. Only Dr. Potter can give me what I need. A fresh start. A new identity. But he refused, leaving me to take matters into my own hands by accepting a job as his partner’s new secretary. Dr. Potter can’t turn down my case forever. Or at least I thought so until I uncovered Dr. Potter’s secret. A secret, which came with a venomous warning...one that destroyed everything.

It’s official. I, Ainsley James, am crazy. Desperate and crazy. It’s the only explanation as to why I’m nauseous, standing outside Maverick Lexington’s door. I mean, it’s possible the stories about his deck of playing cards - with the letters IOU scrawled across the back - are just rumors of the ruthless quid pro quo deals he barters. But the flutters in my stomach know better. Maverick is as cold as they come. But, I need one of those cards. I need to owe Maverick Lexington a favor....

Am I friends with JP Cane? Ha! That's laughable. Besides the fact that he’s adopted some far-fetched notion from the movie When Harry Met Sally that says men and women can't be friends and work together, it’s safe to say we're not friends. He's annoyingly loud, obnoxiously handsome, and has made an art out of poking all my hot buttons...multiple times a day. So you can imagine how disgruntled I am when I not only have to fly to San Francisco with him for work, but stay in the same penthouse. Yup, we're sharing the same air, 24-7. We're talking full-fledged working roommates.

I knocked up my best friend's sister. Let's start with how she decided to inform me and Pacey the news...together. Imagine that nightmare. I was going into what I thought was a hockey marketing meeting, and then bam! I'm going to be a dad and my best friend/teammate is attempting to imprint my face with his fist. Threats were tossed around, friendships were revoked, and then I was marched up to her apartment, suitcases in hand, and forced to live with her so I could take care of her every need. Now I'm finding it harder and harder not to fall for my best friend's little sister.

Being a veteran quarterback means I’m a mentally alert, fine-tuned athletic machine who can make split-second decisions. It’s my job to anticipate what’s going to happen next. But I couldn’t have anticipated the death of our beloved team owner, or his estranged daughter, Hannah Strong, inheriting the Boston Tomcats. She’s stubborn, uptight, infuriating, and wrong about absolutely everything. I can’t stop arguing with her. Or thinking about her. And I don’t want to talk about how good she looks in a skirt. Or how good she’d look out of it. Really, I don’t.

Growing up, I knew my older brother’s best friend thought of me as “Logan’s kid sister”. For me, though, our next-door neighbor Colin felt like anything but a sibling. Whenever I spied on him through my bedroom window, as he banged away, shirtless, on his drum kit, I felt sensations inside me I’d never felt for my actual brother. But when we moved away and Colin’s band took off like a rocket, I knew my tweener fantasies would never become a reality.

I've been dreading this for a year. Okay, that's a lie. I've been dreading this reunion since we graduated high school 10 years ago. So why am I here, standing outside the door like the eternal wallflower I am? I'd say it's because my younger sister browbeat me into it, but the truth is, I'm tired of being a nobody. Of never taking a risk with myself and my life. And...well...maybe I'm also hoping to see him. The tall, insanely gorgeous man walking my way now. Oliver Fritz is regarded as one of Boston's sexiest doctors. I know him as the former god of our school.

Lucky. The one adjective used to describe my entire hockey career. I prefer to call it hard work - at least I did until my game went to complete crap. I haven’t scored in eight games, and the team owner is talking about trading me. I’ve never believed in superstitions. Never needed one. I suppose I was “lucky” in that way. But now the best way to refer to me is desperate. I’d wear the same socks for an entire year just to be the high-scoring center I used to be. Imagine my surprise when after spending New Year’s Eve with a woman, I score a hat trick in the next game.

Have you ever fake dated your bodyguard? I don't recommend it. Especially if he's anything like Erik Wilder: Former football player, world class know-it-all and unapologetic grump. To be clear, I didn't want a bodyguard (hence the fake dating idea). Most days, I can’t figure out why he wants the job either. We drive each other insane, probably because we’re as opposite as two people can be. He’s suspicious, never talks about his past and has the comfort skills of a cactus. I’m a happily-ever-after kind of girl who knows exactly what she wants out of life.

I’m a single female who’s tired of relationships ruining my life. However, there are times when a date would be helpful. If you’re a single man, preferably mid-20s to late-30s, and are in a similar situation, we might be a match. Candidate must be handsome, charming, and willing to pretend to have feelings for me (on a sliding scale, as the event requires). Ability to discuss a wide variety of topics is a plus. Must have your own transportation and a (legal) job. In exchange for your time, I will give you mine. If interested, please email me. Time is of the essence.

Absolutely Amazing!!
The Closer is one of my new favorite books. Like all of Kristy's books this story was beautifully written and once I started I didn't want to put it down. I had to make myself slow down to enjoy the book or I would've burned through it in one sitting. It was a fun, quick, easy read. Cooper and McKinley were well suited for one another. Cooper needed the crazy in his life that was McKinley and she needed him to balance her out. Cooper is fiercely loyal to his family and McKinley needed a man and family like his in her life. Coop is my new favorite book husband! I loved the updates on Ains and Mav (Cooper's older brother from IOU). Pops is still one of my favorite characters ever! He's the grandfather I never had and never knew I wanted! I recommend this book to anyone who loves romance, sports romance, and marriage of convenience romance. 5/5 Stars
I absolutely loved this audiobook. Heather and Conner were great choices to narrate Cooper and McKinley. They did an amazing job bringing these great characters to life. Heather really nailed Mac's crazy to a T and Connor's Coop voice was perfect and sexy! Listening to the audiobook made me fall even more in love with this story. I've listened to it twice and I still can't get enough of Coop, Mac, and Pops!

5 We All Need a Pops in Our Lives Stars!!
UPDATED TO REFLECT MY REVIEW OF THE AUDIOBOOK
What a wonderful job Connor Crais and Heather Firth do bringing to life Pops, Coop and Mac!! I love how the way they narrated this book it allowed me really see the book in my head. This book is filled with so much wit and sarcasm and Connor and Heather truly captured what Ms. Marie conveyed when I read the book. I found myself snort laughing, a few times so much that I had to pause the book. This to me is a sign for perfect narration!
**************************
I loved absolutely everything about this book… Coop and Mac are perfect for each other, even if it takes some time for them to realize it, and Pops will do whatever is necessary to make that happen!!
I wasn’t sure what to expect with Cooper’s book but I can definitely say that this book is one of the best books I’ve read this year. It’s the perfect mixture of witty one-liners, romance, a touch of angst and a enemies-to-quickly turned friends-to lovers story. Mac is a girl that when we meet her, my heart was a little broken for her. I didn’t quite understand the why’s of the opening chapter, but I knew this girl was hurting.
Oh my goodness the first time Coop and Mac meet had me chuckling. This girl is so feisty and he’s just not sure what to do with that attitude. I will say however that her feistiness plays to his benefit as their story progresses. These two did their best to ignore their simmering chemistry and when they get married, while it appears on the surface that this arrangement will work, I knew there’d be so much more to it!!
Can we discuss Pops for just a hot minute? He’s literally one of the best characters I’ve ever read. Cooper is doing everything he can to make sure Pops is cared for; unfortunately for him, Pops has a mind of his own and when Mac enters their world on a permanent basis, the wheels they start turning in Pops’s head!
For two people that weren’t looking for love and were doing everything possible to avoid it, these two just needed to get out of their own way to realize when you’re not looking for something, that’s exactly when it’s dropped in your lap…figuratively and literally!!
If you’re looking for a book that will keep you entertained from beginning to end, this is the book you must read!!

Absolutely LOVED this Fake Relationship Rom-Com
"I’m addicted to this woman. So much so that I can’t pitch, concentrate, or even attend a post-game meeting like I’m obligated to do. All I can think about is how fast I can get home." Review: When Kristy announced that Maverick's brother Cooper (from IOU) was getting his own book, I cannot tell you how excited I was. IOU continues to be one of my favorite RomComs so I have been chomping at the bit! Kristy did it again and SHE NAILED IT! McKinley is determined to do things on her own. After going through some major life events, she is doing her best to keep on going. Cooper is a famous "Closer" in the Major League. He works hard in the game and taking care of his Pops, just not taking care of himself. McKinley meets Cooper late one night in an unfortunate situation. He comes to her rescue and they just so happen to know someone in common. Cooper is drawn to this crazy spitfire and can't help but be drawn to her and come to her rescue even when she doesn't want it. Oh my gosh these two! I laughed so hard and I cried too. I love them. Cooper really is the perfect man. This boy stole my heart and I don't even care if he gives it back. My heart ached for Mac and the guilt she holds, but there was no one better than Cooper to be there for her and help her heal. The banter in this book was amazing. Between Cooper, Mac and Pops I was always laughing. “I fell in love with a crazy person.” Cooper killed me with his hilarious, possessive and naughty thoughts. I loved every minute! I absolutely love Pops and want to adopt him. He was hilarious and I loved the bond he shared with each and everyone of them. I LOVED how much we got to see of Coopers brother Maverick and Ainsley from IOU. The update on them made me so happy. Cooper is making me reconsider who my favorite Lexington boy is.🤔 I can keep two Lexington boys, right? I listened to the audiobook by Connor Crais and Heather Firth. Connor is becoming a favorite he does such a great job bringing the hero to life. That voice and his inflections...🥵 Heather is newer to me, but I thought she did a great job bringing McKinley to life. I really enjoyed this audiobook!

Crazy meets swoony
🎧 AUDIO ONLY REVIEW 🎧
Audio: 4/5 🎧
#thecloser by @authorkristymarie was an amazing book by itself. But put it in audio form and it’s a home run.
@heatherfirthnarrator is becoming one of my top female narrators, I love the way she tells the story and makes it more real.
@connorcrais, this is the first audio book I’ve heard from him, but I can definitely see myself getting more books that he reads.
If you like a funny, crazy and swoony books, while hearing some 🔥 narration, This is totally for you ( but then again so is every other book written by Kristy)
I’m a huge snob when it comes to audiobooks (sorry not sorry) there was just some minor quirks that I wanted to change, but other than that it was awesome!

An absolute MUST LISTEN!
K Marie has done it again with a witty and emotional ride that will make you laugh and cry!!! And these narrators brought this story to life, and made me fall in love with it all over again. I cried tears of joy and heartache for these characters once again listening to this emotional, yet laugh out loud book. And both narrators did a PERFECT job portraying these multi-layered characters and telling their story.
Cooper and McKinley's story is the perfect mix of a broody, yet compassionate hero, and a quirky and hilarious heroine. Together these two are FIRE! Their chemistry is crazy perfection; the banter, wit, and passion are some of the best from this author; and the story will surprise you every step of the way.
I loved the cameos from other beloved IOU characters, and Pops is a charming and funny side character who will steal a few scenes and lines. I am so proud of this author for following her heart and letting it all out on the pages of this book - you can FEEL the passion and beliefs of these characters through the beautiful and bold writing from K Marie! Well done once again!!

Loved everything about this!
This book is a hoot, LOVED the characters, the plot, loved EVERYTHING. It´s refreshing, charming, sexy, and so much fun. It is the perfect mix of humour and feels. I was laughing one minute and in spells of emotions the next. The flirty tension, teasing and frustration between the two main characters were so entertaining that I could not stop reading/listening to their story.
McKinley (Mac) is a hot mess, a little eccentric, spirited and stubborn as hell. She wants for nothing, doesn’t have much but gives all she can in kindness. She has gotten herself in a bit of a situation but is determined to handle it all on her own.
Cooper is a bit of a grump with a hero complex and the swooniest dreamiest book boyfriend you could wish for. He does everything for the people he cares about, especially his Pops. When Mac storms into his life, he doesn’t know what hit him nor that she will end up being the crazy to his calm. Set to help her out, she fights him at every turn and makes it clear she doesn’t need saving.
Also, you will fall in love with Coopers Pops; he is the best. Him and Mac are certainly keeping Cooper on his toes, more than he likes.
Audio is performed in Dual narration by Heather Firth and Connor Crais, who couldn’t have been more perfect for these characters. Their comedic timing is on point, as well as their emotional scenes. It’s the first time I listen to Heather Firth, but she perfectly portrays the female lead. Her imitation, especially of Mackinley´s inner dialogues, are hilarious! I always enjoy the hell out of Connor´s narration; his voice just has the right balance of charm, cockiness and emotional depts.
This book just warmed my heart, made me smile, laugh, swoon and shows that love will find you when you least expect it. It's my first read by Kirsty Marie, so gotta check out Cooper´s brother Mavericks story in IOU.

Heartwarming
Heartwarming and fun. Listened to and thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook. The marriage of convenience trope is a favorite of mine. Enjoyed the way Mac and Cooper’s relationship developed and Pops part in it all. Really liked Cooper’s character - Mac’s character was harder to relate to. Excellent voices by the narrators, although much too slow at 1x speed to keep my attention - listened at 1.8 speed.

OMG THIS STORY !!!!
The Closer is a fantastic read and played complete havoc with my heart.
Honestly Cooper is one of the Swooniest characters I have ever read.
The way he talked to Mack the things he said to her and the way he took care of her was the sweetest most romantic thing.
I Loved listening to this book.
Heather Firth and Conner Crais are Exceptional in telling this story their voices just swept me away.
A Phenomenal book that I highly recommend.

it just hits different listening to it.
OK so I've read the story and my review still stands. My thoughts are no different in terms of the characters and their journey but it is a different experience listening to their journey. I feel like putting a voice to characters and hearing that emotion just transcends you to a different world and I felt totally consumed in their world.
I love Heather and Connor on this book. The way they tell the story of Cooper and Mac is just perfect. Every emotion is palpable and with such an emotionally driven story it's only made it all the more real for the reader. What a duo and what a book. I'll say it again having read it a few times and listened it to aswell.... this story is pure magic. Kristy is a word wizard and smashed it out the park once again here.
I don't know what I expected. I mean I expected to a degree Cooper to be the goofy wind up little brother we got a sneak peak at in IOU, his brother Maverick and Ainsley's book.
But it could not have been any more different.
Before you think something crazy, Cooper does still have his sharp witt and groofy side but his story is not like his brothers, not even a little.
Cooper shoulders every burden, takes on every responsibility and holds himself accountable for everything damn thing. That's a whole lot of pressure for a young man who worked hard and achieved his dreams but isn't living the life you'd think he should be. He from young age has cared for his beloved pops. Nothing else mattered but doing what was right for pop's. Even when pop's stacked the odds against him. Cooper isn't all sunshine and rainbows. He's tired and stretched thin so he's a little cranky and a whole lot of stubborn but ... this man. I swear he's a freaking saint. So sweet. Loyal beyond belief. He was a breath of fresh air with his genuine honesty and deep rooted compassion. I loved him, more than Mav... more than any male character Kristy has graced us with.
Mac aka Mckinley is a hot mess in deep waters with no life raft. This woman is treading rock bottom and it hurt my soul because lord she was trying. I felt a deep sense of relatablility to her character. She suffered unimaginable loss which was essentially just the beginning of her heartbreak. Now at a point where life just continues to kick her, she is trying to do better, trying to not rely on anyone and be anyone's burden. The poor woman could not catch a break. I appreciated the raw reality of loss and the true effects it had on her mental health. She was honest maybe to a fault... she was so sweet and absolutely hilarious. And her and pop's... lord they were trouble with a capital T together.
There journey is fascinating because its almost three journies rolled into one. You have Mckinleys person journey of loss, overcoming and acceptance. You have Coopers personal journey of the struggles of juggling, the guilt and the stubbornness and learning to accept some help. And then you have their journey together. A marriage of convenience. A friends to lovers epic tale of being unable to fight the undeniable connection despite the hot mess that is their personal lives. It at times was a heavy read with heartbreaking situations and real anguish. But there is also that undeniable chemistry that burns so bright between Mac and Coop. There is the hilarious bickering and banter between them that had me falling in hard in love with their love. Honestly their story was so unexpected but holy appreciated in every way. They become eachothers crutch through life and it happened so naturally despite all the crazy that it was impossible to not fall in love with these characters and be totally consumed in their turbulent journey.
It would be a disservice to not mention the main man of the show, Pop's. The heart of the story and the backbone of these characters. A cranky old man with nothing but time to wind everyone he sees fit up. A trouble maker who's stubbornness gets him in one to many hot spots on many occasions. He is fanfreakingtastic. Him and Mac together getting upto no good just fulfilled me with so much happiness I can't even. His relationship with Cooper and even Mav is something so special. He melts my black soul mun.
This book hits in so many ways emotionally. It's a journey with so many layers and so much to give and with characters that are so well developed. It kept surprising me, kept breaking my heart and kept making me love them harder than I thought I could. I laughed till it hurt, I cried like a blubbering baby and I swooned at all the sweetness. Coop and Mac took me through the ringer but it was so worth it.
Honestly I could gush all day about my love for their love. I'm so sad it had to finish. It's so so good. But what a way to finish. That ending.... oh I was so damn satisfied.
Now I'm in a state of depression waiting on what's next from kristy and her crazy characters. At this point I don't care as long as it comes soon.... I need my next fix!!!.

3.8 ⭐️
For the most part this was a good story. But there were some issues within this story that the character needed serious counselling for, that were brushed over.
I really enjoyed these narrators. I think I'll find some more of their books to listen too.
