Publisher's Summary

A brilliant female codebreaker. An “unbreakable” Japanese naval code. A pilot on a top-secret mission that could change the course of WWII. The Codebreaker's Secret is a dazzling story of love and intrigue set during America’s darkest hour.

1943. As war in the Pacific rages on, Isabel Cooper and her codebreaker colleagues huddle in “the dungeon” at Station HYPO in Pearl Harbor, deciphering secrets plucked from the airwaves in a race to bring down the enemy. Isabel has only one wish: to avenge her brother’s death. But she soon finds life has other plans when she meets his best friend, a hotshot pilot with secrets of his own.

1965. Fledgling journalist Lu Freitas comes home to Hawaii to cover the grand opening of the glamorous Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Rockefeller's newest and grandest project. When a high-profile guest goes missing, Lu forms an unlikely alliance with an intimidating veteran photographer to unravel the mystery. The two make a shocking discovery that stirs up memories and uncovers an explosive secret from the war days. A secret that only a codebreaker can crack.

A Fabulous Story!

I have listened to several books written by this author, and I have really gotten my teeth into the story and stayed there. One great thing about this author is that she puts so much into the descriptions of people, places, flora and fauna that I can just picture it all in my mind! The story line was really intense and moving for me, and the narrator has such command over the telling. I really loved this story!

Good ending

This story did not draw me in as much as I thought it would, but it did finally build up to good ending. The Audible narrator didn’t have very distinct differences in voice between some of the characters. Overall, it was relaxing to listen to.

false advertising

Did I purchase the wrong book? Completely missed the concept that I would be listening to a college girl's angst? Chapter 7, bored to death.

Excellent

I loved this story! Sara Ackerman rivets you with the day to day drama and tension experienced in war time, then she adds the personal element with the love story heightened by war. I've listened to several of Ackwrman's books. This one is my hands down favorite.

Best WW2 Stories I’ve Found

I am a huge fan of Sara Ackerman’s style of writing. There is always just enough facts with supporting research to teach something in each book.
Very often the popular novels about this period in history in the Pacific focus only on the bombing at Pearl Harbor.
Sara Ackerman takes smaller pieces of stories either during or after this tragedy and expands the stories around individuals that are not so well known.
Her imagery and culture references make you feel you can taste the ocean and smell the cocoa butter. The flowers and their colors in bloom or in leis seem to burst off the page as you read.
I can’t believe I have to wait another year to return to the islands in these books and learn more…

Codebreaker is a home run.

The Codebreakers Secret is my favorite of Ackermans books so far. I have read and loved them all, but so far this one really struck a note with me. I am the daughter of a WWII fighter pilot, and the descriptions of the pilots hit home.
I love Audible because I can bake liliko’i pie as I listen to my favorite books. I look forward to Ackermans next books that I hear are on coming in soon like waves from the horizon.
