Publisher's Summary

It's hard to live when you think you deserve to die....

When a tired old inmate is found dead in his cell, the prison is obligated to investigate and so DI Barton attends. The men he interviews have been convicted of some of the worst things a human being can do, but it appears likely that the death was due to natural causes.

When the house of the dead man is burgled and that crime is followed by a suspicious fire, Barton desperately needs to speak to his widow, but she’s nowhere to be found.

In the space of 24 hours, everyone he wants to talk to has vanished. Then he receives some post, which makes him believe he could be the next to disappear.

Barton’s investigation goes full circle, through a series of brutal murders, back to the prison, and all signs are pointing to the fact that he’s made a terrible mistake.

There’s a violent killer on the loose who wants everyone to learn that some people deserve to die.

DI Barton is back as Ross Greenwood continues with his best-selling series, perfect for fans of Mark Billingham and Ian Rankin.

Critic Reviews

"Move over Rebus and Morse; a new entry has joined the list of great crime investigators in the form of Detective Inspector John Barton. A rich cast of characters and an explosive plot kept me turning the pages until the final dramatic twist." (Richard Burke)

"Master of the psychological thriller genre Ross Greenwood once again proves his talent for creating engrossing and gritty novels that draw you right in and won’t let go until you’ve reached the shocking ending." (Caroline Vincent, BitsAboutBooks)

"Ross Greenwood doesn’t write clichés. What he has written here is a fast-paced, action-filled puzzle with believable characters that's spiced with a lot of humour." (Kath Middleton)

The pauses are just annoying enough to slowly drive you mad

Our there no directors involved in the recording of these books? Someone say something to the reader about the pauses. If he can’t change get a knew reader. It’s a shame the book itself is enjoyable.

shocking twist

Really enjoy this author and narrorator. The dark senses of humor and the family story line are a joy too, in all of the books. All I have to say is, hurry up on reeasing the next book, I can't wait!!!

My favorite of the four

I had lost heart with The Ice Killer but was not too annoyed since it was “included”. This one was not free which caused me to hesitate but definitely worth the credit. Interesting plot twists and a surprisingly engaging protagonist.

D.I. Barton Series

I really enjoyed the home life of the police officers. Some have "normal" lives, some have lost a child, some a parent, a pregnancy, a partner...just regular people that have to obey the laws and bring down the bad guys; of course some are bad girls. I have listened to all four D.I. Barton books and enjoyed the writing of Ross Greenwood very much!
I also enjoy listening to David Thorpe as he narrates the voices of all four books!

Yet another Winner.

I love Barton & his team, hopefully this will be made into a TV series, it's one of my favourites. Considering the gruesome bits & the dreadful subject of what these people had done, a really sad bit too, there were bits that made me laugh, the prison interviews were hilarious. Very well written & narrated. When's the next one please?

The best yet!

I’m only half way through and I’m loving it…I’m going to have to limit my listening time as this is the last one in the series currently on Audible. The gang is all back and the murders start off in a prison. I would add that this book does have a story line which features child molestation but it’s not graphic and sensitively handled.

This book is well worth my credit and the narration is brilliant.

one of the finest authors I've read in a good...

...long while, and I own nearly 900 audiobooks. A wonderful crime writer with fabulous page turner stories. A perspective from the detective and also the killer isn't a new structure, but the author does it brilliantly, and you end up not sure which side you're ultimately rooting for... it's a delicious combination!

Brilliant - love this author

5 stars all round. So glad I found this author. Love the way the story is told from both perspectives and yet keeps us guessing.
A difficult subject in this one but handled well.
Narrator is fab and the storyline is great. Roll on the next one.
