Story
When DI Barton is asked to investigate a seemingly innocuous fire that kills, he believes it's either children fooling around or a worrying racially motivated crime. As he delves deeper into the case, he soon realises that there is a history of similar blazes spread out over many years, all within a close area. An idea suggested by pathologist Mortis makes Barton suspect he has the arsonist’s motives wrong.

Publisher's Summary
It's hard to live when you think you deserve to die....
When a tired old inmate is found dead in his cell, the prison is obligated to investigate and so DI Barton attends. The men he interviews have been convicted of some of the worst things a human being can do, but it appears likely that the death was due to natural causes.
When the house of the dead man is burgled and that crime is followed by a suspicious fire, Barton desperately needs to speak to his widow, but she’s nowhere to be found.
In the space of 24 hours, everyone he wants to talk to has vanished. Then he receives some post, which makes him believe he could be the next to disappear.
Barton’s investigation goes full circle, through a series of brutal murders, back to the prison, and all signs are pointing to the fact that he’s made a terrible mistake.
There’s a violent killer on the loose who wants everyone to learn that some people deserve to die.
DI Barton is back as Ross Greenwood continues with his best-selling series, perfect for fans of Mark Billingham and Ian Rankin.
Critic Reviews
"Move over Rebus and Morse; a new entry has joined the list of great crime investigators in the form of Detective Inspector John Barton. A rich cast of characters and an explosive plot kept me turning the pages until the final dramatic twist." (Richard Burke)
"Master of the psychological thriller genre Ross Greenwood once again proves his talent for creating engrossing and gritty novels that draw you right in and won’t let go until you’ve reached the shocking ending." (Caroline Vincent, BitsAboutBooks)
"Ross Greenwood doesn’t write clichés. What he has written here is a fast-paced, action-filled puzzle with believable characters that's spiced with a lot of humour." (Kath Middleton)

D.I. Barton Series
I really enjoyed the home life of the police officers. Some have "normal" lives, some have lost a child, some a parent, a pregnancy, a partner...just regular people that have to obey the laws and bring down the bad guys; of course some are bad girls. I have listened to all four D.I. Barton books and enjoyed the writing of Ross Greenwood very much!
I also enjoy listening to David Thorpe as he narrates the voices of all four books!

series gets better with each book
I truly enjoy Ross Greenwood's style. I quickly knew who the actual killer was early on, but with these books it is not important. The whys and hows along with a delightful cast of characters makes this a fabulous series. So refreshing in the current climate of formula thrillers. As always David Thorpe is fantastic

I was rooting for the killer in this one
First you should be warned, this deals with some horrible subjects with crimes against children. While there is no real detail, its referred to enough that it could bother some. Now on to the book.... here we see someone killing convicted child predators. They had all served their time, but one dies just days before release. The next two were taken out soon after release. I honestly didn't want the killer to be caught or serve time. Them dying was just fine to me! In the end, it wrapped up nicely and as it should. I loved this series so much. Narrator did a great job with all of the books.

Our there no directors involved in the recording of these books? Someone say something to the reader about the pauses. If he can’t change get a knew reader. It’s a shame the book itself is enjoyable.

Bedtime listening, sometimes lose the plot!
I find I have to keep going back and forth to find where I went to sleep but this is not a reflection on this audiobook! My wife always says she goes to sleep during the best audiobooks/TV programs!
Seriously, the best so far with a complex but measured pace, and like Ice Killer a degree of empathy with the 'villain', a prisoner seeking revenge on sex offenders, also a final twist.
Perhaps at the cusp of becoming formulaic, So, like Fawlty Towers, call time on an excellent series and start a new one?
But I must admit I would miss Barton (and his family!), Sanders and Strange! And Serena!!
Anyway, regardless I will follow Ross Greenwood.
