Who is Ariadne Hui?

  • Laser-focused lawyer diligently climbing the corporate ladder
  • The “perfect” daughter living out her father’s dream
  • Shocking love interest of South Korea’s hottest star

Ariadne Hui thrives on routine. So what if everything in her life is planned down to the minute: That’s the way she likes it. If she’s going to make partner in Toronto’s most prestigious law firm, she needs to stay focused at all times.

But when she comes home after yet another soul-sucking day to find an unfamiliar, gorgeous man camped out in her living room, focus is the last thing on her mind. Especially when her roommate explains this is Choi Jihoon, her cousin freshly arrived from Seoul to mend a broken heart. He just needs a few weeks to rest and heal; Ari will barely even know he’s there. (Yeah, right.)

Jihoon is kindness and chaos personified, and it isn’t long before she’s falling, hard. But when one wrong step leads to a world-shaking truth, Ari finds herself thrust onto the world stage: not as the competent, steely lawyer she’s fought so hard to become, but as the mystery woman on the arm of a man the entire world claims to know. Now with her heart, her future, and her sense of self on the line, Ari will have to cut through all the pretty lies to find the truth of her relationship...and discover the Ariadne Hui she’s finally ready to be.

I LOVED this!!!

The power of a book...and, of course, it's narrator...

If you'd asked me what I knew about the world of K-pop a few days ago, I would have shrugged, named a few bands I've heard of, a few songs I might recognize. That's about it. Me, a music enthusiast with nearly 5 decades of everything musical under the sun in my playlist collection. But with that much time under my belt, I think I'm a little slower than I used to be to experience what's newer. (Altho, admittedly, I have a TBLT list of groups & artists & songs that I want to explore...someday.) Midway thru this book, though, I went to my music streaming service with the intent of finding out what I've been missing out on with K-pop. I've been missing out on A LOT.

That's the power of a book, of this book. New worlds open up. New cultures become familiar. New people, fictional or not, become close friends & acquaintances, people who share themselves & their vulnerabilities, who show that we have so many things in our life experiences that may look different, but are actually deep down very similar.

Thanks to Lily Chu, there's now a world where Ari & Jihoon exist, and I don't want to go back to a time where they didn't. This book was lovely, the characters raw & real & imperfect & human. This is one of those books that make you want to fall in love with falling in love, even if it means you have to weather the hurts along the way. It's a 5 out of 5 ❤'s.

And then there's the narration. Phillipa Soo did such an amazing job of voicing both characters, bringing Ari's vulnerability & soul-searching journey to life & seasoning it with Jihoon's sweet, contemplative presence. Phillipa Soo makes this amazing book go full-on HD. Will I search out other titles Soo has narrated just because she has narrated them? Most definitely!

All-in-all, this book/audiobook is a win. A total in-your-feelings catharsis. Fingers crossed we get some side stories from this. (Please please please!!!)

If you're reading this & you're not the author, do not pause. Go listen to this title.

Now.

Right now.

If you're reading this & you ARE the author and/or narrator, my sincere thanks for your hard work & for putting this out there for us to enjoy. ❤❤❤ Thank you thank you thank you!!!

Lily Chu does it AGAIN!!!

Such a fun book! She created another book that gem with The Comeback. And I’m also convinced she is clairvoyant because the coincidences between what she wrote most likely ages ago, and what recently happened with BTS! 🤯 I’m now impatiently waiting for her next book, and hoping for a Kit/Hanna sequel 🫰

I love the Lily Chu, Phillipa Soo power couple. Keep them coming!!

CANNOT stop listening!!

This was my second Lily Chu audible book and it was fabulous. Great well- developed characters that you root for. Fast paced. Sucks you right in to their world and won’t let go. Performance was amazing - definitely going to keep both this author AND this narrator on the top of my list. A KEEPER!

Couldn't put this down

I stayed up far too late to finish this in one day - I had to know what happened! I loved the characters - Ariadne was so relatable in her determination to be successful and make her family proud. I also loved how much she hated expressing feelings and how sweetly Ji-Hoon was able to draw her out - they were a truly adorable couple. Phillipa Soo did an excellent job making the dialogue come to life - this was a joy to listen to. (I also caught 2 subtle references to the Stand-In - I like that Lily Chu is creating her own world)

Highly recommended as a Kpop fan!!

What a refreshing listen!! I appreciate the light that Lily Chu shines on Asian voices and culture. A great storyline especially with the main character’s awakening to the world of kpop and idols. As a fan myself, I loved how the way the author almost mirrored my own journey into kpop (minus the relationship to a kpop idol lol). Lily Chu and Phillipa Soo did it again!! 🤩

Loved it!!!

I normally never write reviews for anything.
But this the second novel Lily Chu has made me fall in love with. Please keep writing these stories. Overall the narrator was engaging, and the story did have twists that a traditional romance novel would over look. I’d recommend this to anyone who loves romance.

Someone needs to edit this

Possibly the flatest contemporary romance I have listened to so far. it had potential, maybe if it had been shorter. very little chemistry.

Best Audible Plus Catalogue Title so far

I’m so glad Lily Chu’s audiobook(s) have been included in the Audible Plus catalogue.
The cliché not to judge a book by its cover is a cliché for a reason and yet I know I fall foul of this advisory maxim.

I’m embarrassingly certain I would never have chosen to buy one of Chu’s books based on the animated cover picture. However I’m always seeking light relief that’s well-written (due to longterm bedridden illness no TV, little ability to see people non-taxing audio is my lifeline.) I constantly look for the fiction titles with romance and love and a satisfying ending because there’s a surfeit of intense suffering in my own life that means I can’t cope with the more literary titles I listened to pre-illness.

My standards have necessarily had to drop but for all the easy light-heartedness of this story, Chu has a great turn of phrase. Two examples - the lawyer protagonist’s dress style is wonderfully phrased as “aggressively unexciting,” and she speaks of being familiar with, “the knife of inadequacy.”

There is also intelligence and great insight into the thorny and nuanced nature of “representation” - in this case the revelations of what a third generation Canadian woman with Chinese heritage has to navigate in terms of prejudice. This was extremely deftly woven into the well-paced storyline and should give any reader without direct experience of similar prejudice pause.

I appreciate a decent length book as I whip through them in days so this was also a plus for me. I’m looking forward to The Stand In, also included in the member’s catalogue, and, Chu is the first author the member’s catalogue has introduced me to who I’d also happily spend a credit on.
Thank you Chu and Audible.

Cliché ridden but enjoyable

Plot 3/5
Writing 3/5
Performance 4/5

Chu’s protagonist is pretty 2-D and her main character trait is that she’s a workaholic, which makes the book difficult to read at points because she’s frustratingly emotionally stunted. The book is elevated by Soo’s performance, as her voice work makes Ariadne’s perspective less flat.

Love Lily Chu

Best romance, a bit of a slow start but worth persisting. Also very astute observations on race, colour, culture woven into a story that travels between Canada and east Asia. None the less this is a story everyone will enjoy. Not explicit so also a good one for younger ‘teen’ readers.

This is the second Lily Chu book I've listened to, and I cannot get enough. Really easy book to listen to, flowed well, right amount of funny and warm fuzzys. The narrator is perfect match for the main character and style of this book.

Great story, fun with thoughtful themes.

it was great to see a story that wasn't wall-to-wall white folk and vanilla culture. This book has some really interesting themes on identity and family that actually sparked a conversation in my household. Good story and lots of fun bits, and cute characters that were really relatable and seem very real.
