Story
With the closing of the Harlan County, Kentucky coalmines, marijuana has become the biggest cash crop in the state. A hundred pounds of it can gross three-hundred thousand dollars, but that’s chump change compared to the quarter million a human body can get you - especially when it’s sold off piece-by-piece. So when Dickie and Coover Crowe, dope-dealing brothers known for sampling their own supply, decide to branch out into the body business, it’s up to U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens to stop them.

Set in Arizona mining country, Hombre is the tale of a white man raised by Indians, who must come to the aid of people who hate him when their stagecoach is attacked by outlaws. As thrilling as his contemporary novels of crime, double-cross, and murder in Detroit and Miami, Hombre is Elmore Leonard at his riveting best - no less than one would expect from the creator of US Marshal Raylan Givens ( Justified).

He used to be on the bomb squad, but it's not until he transfers out that Chris Mankowski really begins juggling with dynamite. Rape and revenge are just the tip of the iceberg in a twisty tale that brings Detroit's denizens to life - and occasional death - in all their seedy glory. Electrifying, explosive, and unexpected, this is Elmore Leonard at his suspenseful best.

The smallest of small-time criminals, Ernest Stickley Jr. figures his luck's about to change when Detroit used-car salesman Frank Ryan catches him trying to boost a ride from Ryan's lot. Frank's got some surefire schemes for getting rich quick - all of them involving guns - and all Stickley has to do is follow "Ryan's Rules" to share the wealth. War in Cuba isn't Ben Tyler's concern. Still, sailing mares and guns into Havana harbor in 1898 - right past the submerged wreckage of the U.S. battleship Maine - may not be the smartest thing the recently prison-sprung horse wrangler ever did. Neither is shooting one of the local Guardia, though the pompous peacock deserved it. Now Tyler's sitting tight in a vermin-infested Cuban stockade waiting to face a firing squad....

Publisher's Summary
Trust was rare and precious in the wide-open towns that sprung up like weeds on America's frontier - with hustlers and hucksters arriving in droves by horse, coach, wagon, and rail, and gunmen working both sides of the law, all too eager to end a man's life with a well-placed bullet. The New York Times best-selling grand master of suspense deftly displays the other side of his genius, with seven classic Western tales of destiny and fatal decision...and trust as essential to survival as it is hard-earned.

Great, but not the "complete" western stories
What made the experience of listening to The Complete Western Stories of Elmore Leonard the most enjoyable?
The stories were all so good! The narrators were excellent. I'd read many Leonard novels, but never his western ones and never any of his short stories.
What did you like best about this story?
Leonard's quality as a writer, bringing detail to the portraits of the times, the place, the artifacts and, especially, the interactions among whites, blacks, Apaches, and Mexicans. He doesn't stint in showing the racism, prejudice and injustice of the Southwest in the 1880s and '90s.
Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?
I can't say because there were so many vivid characters.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I just wished that some of the stories were longer or that there were more of them.
Any additional comments?
This audiobook is a SELECTION of 11 stories from the paper book that contains 30 stories. The stories themselves are unabridged, but the "complete" collection is not here. I wish they were. Moreover, the stories selected are presented out of the order they appear in the book, which is strictly chronological in order of publication, from 1951 to 1994. I wonder why this was done. I'm not blaming Audible for either of these issues.

Enjoying it but…
Any additional comments?
My only complaint is that this is sold as unabridged. When the cover image (taken from the book I realize) states THE COMPLETE WESTERN STORIES OF ELMORE LEONARD, and the audiobook is presenting six of those stories, it is an abridgement. Just because none of the stories themselves have been abridged doesn't make in an unabridged version of the book. Other than that the readers are good and the stories (the six presented) are quite good.

More from Elmore
What made the experience of listening to The Complete Western Stories of Elmore Leonard the most enjoyable?
Just got into Elmore Leonard's works a few months ago. So far I've fully enjoyed everything he's written. I didn't realize how many stories he's written that have been made into very good movies. Love the way he sets a scene but even more I enjoy the dialog between characters.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Too hard to pick just one.
Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes. Always does a very good job.
Who was the most memorable character of The Complete Western Stories of Elmore Leonard and why?
Again, too difficult to pick just one.

Surprised me
Would you consider the audio edition of The Complete Western Stories of Elmore Leonard to be better than the print version?
Yes. Each story is performed really well. I was very impressed with the narration. I believe it added to the stories.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
These are short stories and each has a different feel. They were all well written
What about the narrators’s performance did you like?
Great acting. As to be expected as the authors are well known actors in some cases.
Any additional comments?
I was going for something light, short stories and easy to listen to at work. After reading the Dark Tower series again, was still in the mood for some 'western' type stuff so I decided to give this a try. VERY surprised! It was awesome

Good enough but not great
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would recommend this to a friend who liked western novels, but not to most people.
If you’ve listened to books by Elmore Leonard before, how does this one compare?
I have not listened to or read Elmore Leonard before, but he compares favorably with other western writers I have read.
What three words best describe the narrators’s performance?
A mixed bag
Was The Complete Western Stories of Elmore Leonard worth the listening time?
Yes, it was worth listening to.
Any additional comments?
I got this mostly for the 3:10 to Yuma story, researching the story and he movies made from it. I generally find western novels to be a fun distraction but don't expect great literature or anything vaguely like historical accuracy. A fun commute audio book, easy to pick up and easy to set aside.
