Story
John Wells has just barely managed to stop an operation designed to drive the United States and Iran into war, but the instigator himself disappeared behind an impenetrable wall of security. Now it's time for him to pay, and Wells has made it his personal mission. There are plenty of crosscurrents at work, though. The White House doesn't want anybody stirring the pot; his old CIA bosses have their own agendas; and other countries are starting to sniff around, sensing something unusual.

Story
Evidence is mounting that someone high up in the CIA is doing the unthinkable - passing messages to ISIS, alerting them to planned operations. Finding out the mole's identity without alerting him, however, will be very hard, and to accomplish it Wells will have to do something he thought he'd left behind forever. He will have to reassume his former identity as an al Qaeda jihadi, get captured, and go undercover to befriend an ISIS prisoner in a secret Bulgarian prison.

Story
Before he was the Gray Man, Court Gentry was Sierra Six, the junior member of a CIA action team. In their first mission, they took out a terrorist leader, at a terrible price. Years have passed. The Gray Man is on a simple mission when he sees a ghost: the long-dead terrorist, but he's remarkably energetic for a dead man. A decade of time hasn't changed the Gray Man. He isn't one to leave a job unfinished or a blood debt unpaid.

Publisher's Summary
This is New York Times bestseller Alex Berenson's eighth gripping spy novel featuring ex-CIA agent John Wells, for fans of Robert Ludlum and David Baldacci.
In an Istanbul hotel, a source warns that Iranian forces intend to kill a CIA station chief. Ex-CIA agent John Wells is called in to investigate, but before he can get very far, the tip comes true. Which means the next warning the source gives will be taken very seriously indeed. And it's a big one: A radioactive package has been put on a ship from Dubai to the United States.
As the threat level jumps and the government mobilises, Wells is sent on a private mission to find out the truth. From Guatemala to Thailand to Hong Kong to Istanbul, he uses every skill he has, including his ability to go undercover, in the Arab world, to chase down leads. But will it be enough to pull the United States back from the brink of war?

OK, not great
John Wells is called in to investigate a newly developed CIA source in Istanbul. The source warns of a number of attacks, which happen, and of a forthcoming greater threat to mainland of America itself - a radioactive one.
Wells working 'off the books', tracks down a lead.
This is definitely the first book of '?' as the end leaves the reader hanging with Wells in the middle of the hunt for truth - there is no resolution.
Overall just an OK listen. I would have purchased the next book but it is not currently available on Audible (Oct 2020).
George Guidall's narration is excellent.

a letdown
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
The story started well , interesting story well read. Ran out of pace and story 15 mn before the end. In fact I had the impression that the book has not ended. The author just left his desk and forgot to come back? Is he intending to write a sequel? It was all very hurried and unclear in the last 15minutes !!!!very disappointed.
Would you ever listen to anything by Alex Berenson again?
