Story
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Detective Superintendent Peter Diamond is the last detective: a genuine gumshoe, committed to door-stopping and deduction rather than fancy computer gadgetry. "And see if there's any news about the missing girl." Life, as Smith used to say, is just one thing after another - as one investigation ends, a new one begins. But for reasons unknown to the rest of her team, DCI Cara Freeman will be haunted by the next case for the Kings Lake Central murder squad. They find themselves delving into the seamy side of life in the town, and one of their number will have departed before this new investigation is over. Perhaps Detective Sergeant Chris Waters should have seen it coming, but he has a lot more than work on his mind these days.

Love Lovesey
Here’s another crime writer I never would have met had it not been for Audible Plus. And what a writer; the evocation of characters and settings made even the stories I could figure out before the end well worth the ride. Ranging everywhere, from revenge to reconciliation, omniscient narration to epistolary subjectivity, an ersatz ghost to bona fide specters, these made an enjoyable, if sometimes uneven, accompaniment to the evening noggin. And every member of our gallery of readers is well up to the mark.

Entertaining collection
I very rarely leave a review, but as I depend so much on those left by others when choosing my next listen, I've decided I need to do my bit too. 😏.
I very much enjoyed listening to this collection of entertaining crime stories and I will certainly listen to them again. I prefer crime that is not grisly or graphic and these stories satisfy that preference without being overly "cosy". Some of the narrators in this collection are better than others (5 stars for the content, 4 stars for the narration).

A good mix of stories
I'm not usually a fan of short stories but I found this selection very entertaining.
Considering these stories are somewhere in the region of 30 years old, there was no feeling of them being outdated and in only a couple did I guess the conclusion before I got there.
The narrators were excellent throughout.
Good job.

All the stories are interesting with a startling range of subjects.
Serious and empathetic, but also with much fun an humour … I loved the one about HOLMES. The first story about Miss Oyster is also very good… I can honestly say that I did guess some endings … but only when you highlighted the appropriate clue!
I’ll be looking at some of Mr Lovesey’s other writing soon.

It my have been my ears…..
I found this audiobook a bit odd.
With the first story, narrated by a man, it didn’t seem end properly whe suddenly a female reader broke in with another story - mid-way through it seemed - then that suddenly switched to another male reader, also apparently mid-ŵay through that story!
The stories are absorbing though. While the tales are being¡ told that is!
