Publisher's Summary

The crucifixion and resurrection of Christ are central events in our salvation. Yet few Christians have a good grasp of the first-century historical and religious context in which the crucifixion took place, nor of its true significance for the people of that time - and hence for our time as well. Biblical scholar and attorney Dr. Jeannie Constantinou puts modern listeners in the center of the events of Christ's Passion, bringing the best of modern scholarship to bear while keeping her interpretation faithful in every particular to the Orthodox tradition.

Almost 5 star, but...

Coming from an Orthodox perspective, Constantinou's work provides an often unheard viewpoint in modern Evangelicalism. Her book is a great contribution to the Church's understanding of the Savior and paints an eloquent picture of the work of Christ. I can highly recommend her work with only one caveat. Her depiction of substitutionary atonement is a caricature at best and is barely recognizable to anyone with a deeper understanding of this atonement theory. I would say the same thing to my Reformed brethren who often provide inaccurate (and often deliberately flawed) depictions of Christus Victor or Moral Influence for example. At least for me, when I take the major atonement theories not as rivals but as complimentary, I find myself marveling all the more at God's gift to humanity in Jesus of Nazareth. I would have liked to see a more nuanced understanding from the book, but it seems to be a defense of the Orthodox view of the Cross so I'm probably blaming the book for being something it never intended to be. Still, from someone with Constantinou's credentials, I hoped for better. On a picky note, I had to listen to the book on 1.5 speed because the author read her own (very excellent) work at far too slow a speed as is comfortable for me. Overall though, this was well worth my time and I was greatly blessed by the book.

Almost Perfect Portrayal of the Passion

Would have been perfect without the occasional asides about why Orthodoxy is the best, or why Substatutionary Atonement is wrong.

Wow!

I listened to the Audible version. Very edifying and I learned many things about the crucifixion story I did not previously know. Dr Constantinou has a vast wealth of knowledge of patristic teachings and historical and academic sources and synthesizes them all nicely into an easy to follow narrative. This would be particularly beneficial to listen during lent I feel. Highly recommend.

Amazing Insight and Thought-Provoking!

All the proverbial “t”s are crossed and “I”s dotted in the historical presentation, in Christian, Jewish, and pagan accounts…if you’re familiar with Constantinou’s work this is expected. She outdoes herself yet again with in-depth, objective recounting of medical science’s attempts-in the past century-to understand the horrific agony of crucified victims. You’ll get an introduction (or at least a stout refresher) in Roman legal proceedings and particularly the means by which Rome controlled an outpost like 1st century Palestine/Judea. Most pertinent, a detailed exposition of Eastern theology is explained in well written aptitude; a very needed diamond in the rough of overcrowded Western libraries presenting soteriology as a mere legal transaction.

He is Risen!

Loved it. it's hard to believe we as a body of believers have so many gaps in basic Christian theology.

This book is so full of great information and presented wonderfully by Dr Jeannie.

Don't pass up the opportunity to know the Lord's Passion like never before. Amen!

“While Christ, the second Adam was asleep on the cross, his bride, the church was formed from his side. “

The Crucifixion Of The King Of Glory by Eugenia Scarvelis Constantinou, PHD

I was given an audible copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. The book is long, about 15 hours on audible and pretty academic. It’s not an easy weekend read, in my opinion. But, I would recommend it to anyone wanting to get a better understanding of the cross or someone looking for a good Lenten reading.
The first section of the book was a bit challenging for me to get through as it was mostly focused on the history of the Jewish customs. But, it was necessary to lay the ground work so I encourage you to press on if you find yourself struggling.
The last section of the book walks you through every step Jesus went through from the last supper on. It was great to read as we were approaching Holy Week in the church. I feel like I will now have a greater understanding than ever before as I attending the services. Dr. Jeannie went to great lengths to take you through the process and explain actions of the people around him. I found my heart aching so many times as she explained the horror and pain Jesus accepted for us. He laid down his life for us, it wasn’t taken from him. How moving this is! This quote from Augustine that Dr. Jeanie quoted gave me chills,“While Christ, the second Adam was asleep on the cross, his bride, the church was formed from his side. “
I HIGHLY recommend reading this book during lent and especially as you draw closer to Holy Week and ultimately Pascha. 10/10
