The Dalai Lama, at his most compassionate and outspoken, here elaborates and deepens his vision for the nonreligious way. Transcending the mere "religion wars", he outlines a system of secular ethics that gives tolerant respect to religion, those that ground ethics in a belief in God and an afterlife, and those that understand good actions as leading to better states of existence in future lives. And yet, with the highest level of spiritual and intellectual authority, the Dalai Lama makes a claim for what he calls a third way.

Most people have heard of the Celts - the elusive, ancient tribal people who resided in present-day England, Ireland, Scotland and France. Paradoxically characterized as both barbaric and innocent, the Celts appeal to the modern world as a symbol of a bygone era, a world destroyed by the ambition of empire and the spread of Christianity throughout Western Europe. Despite the pervasive cultural and literary influence of the Celts, shockingly little is known of their way of life and beliefs, because very few records of their stories exist.

Publisher's Summary
Featuring a delightful cast of characters and timeless Buddhist wisdom, and with His Holiness' compassion pervading every chapter, The Dalai Lama's Cat is simply enchanting. Not so much fly-on-the-wall as cat-on-the-sill, this is the warmhearted tale of a small kitten rescued from the slums of New Delhi who finds herself in a beautiful sanctuary with sweeping views of the snowcapped Himalayas.
In her exotic new home, the Dalai Lama's cat encounters Hollywood stars, Buddhist masters, Ivy League professors, famous philanthropists, and a host of other people who come visiting His Holiness. Each encounter offers a fresh insight into finding happiness and meaning in the midst of a life of busyness and challenge.
Drawing us into her world with her adorable but all-too-flawed personality, the Dalai Lama's cat discovers how instead of trying to change the world, changing the way we experience the world is the key to true contentment.
This audiobook also contains six delightful tracks taking you through guided stretches and sits, including:
- How to sit when you meditate
- Standing roll down and breath counting
- Paw raise and purring
- Threading the needle and body awareness
- Cat pose and visualisation technique
- Shoulder bridge and analytical meditation
- Paw stretch, tranquillity and affirmations

Best Listen so far this year!
Where does The Dalai Lama's Cat + The Dalai Lama's Cat: Guided Meditations rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This book captures your heart and your mind. I have read all 3 now and my 13 yr old son just finished this one too and immediately downloaded the 2nd. We love the brilliant narrative of this little Himalayan cat, who is on a path through life similar to all creatures - and surprisingly, we can relate!
Who was your favorite character and why?
While there is no question my son and I both love the little Snow Lion, he feels an affinity for Sam and I do love Mrs. Trencci.
Which scene was your favorite?
I loved how she came to meet up with her Tom Cat - needing to overcome her aversions to non familiar places.
If you could take any character from The Dalai Lama's Cat + The Dalai Lama's Cat: Guided Meditations out to dinner, who would it be and why?
The Dalai Lama - as I am sure it would be - cativating!

Even better than Michie's nonfiction Buddhist book
I had extremely low expectations for this book but maybe I was just in the right mood because this was great fun. The Dalai Lama is coming back from the airport when he spots an injured kitten who is literally being thrown in the trash. He has the cat rescued and the cat (who narrates) proceeds to meditate beside the Dalai Lama, meet visiting celebrities and learn Buddhist teachings from the Tibetan leader himself and his disciples. I liked the lessons explained this more than in Michie’s nonfiction books, which are good, too. Grade: A-
The narration is very good by the author.

Lovely Tale of a Lucky Cat w/ Snippets of Buddhism
Beautiful story about an anthropomorphic cat with the good luck to be rescued, nearly dead, from an Indian city slum, by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and raised to adult cat-hood by His Holiness and brother monks, along with a fascinating cast of characters: Westerners looking for Eastern wisdom, Easterners with Western technology, world-famous actors and actresses who come for a blessing, and many more, both human and animal.
During her day-to-day existence, HHC (His Holiness' Cat) learns plenty of lessons on how Buddhist principles can turn the problems in her life into opportunities for growth and further contentment. Lessons that she gently and with much humor then transmits to the reader. It's done so smoothly there's no feeling of being 'preached to,' and the examples from HHC's life are smooth enough that the lessons are quite explanatory and easily transferred into our lives as well.
I bought this first book as a kind of a test; I believe it may have been on sale. Now a fanatical reader of Michie's, I'm off to buy Book 2, in which Snow Lion--one of her many names--becomes a mother. Will she be a good mom? What aspects of Buddhism will she learn to help her to raise her kittens? We shall see...

An entertaining way to learn about meditation
This story is excellent, the visuals and other descriptions are effortlessly included within a story that has 3-D characters. The writing is sophisticated, with insightful observations about people and situations, and yet simply presented. And the main character, the cat, is a charming way to tell a very interesting story.
The narration is perfect too. I found a brief youtube clip of David Michie explaining why he wrote a fictional book and it made sense. I often seek books that are going to give me pleasure and an escape and this book (and the 2 following it) was perfect, and fun. I could feel my face's cheek muscles were getting a workout from the permanent smile on my face as I listened to the story.
The bonus meditation instructions at the end of the audio book are a generous gift to the listener.

Purr joy
This book will not provide you with some ground-breaking wisdom, it touches on the things that, more or less, are common knowledge of what it means to be a good human or cat being, what it means to be happy, joyful or at peace with the world.
What this book does is pure joy of listening to a beautiful story, so soothing for your frayed nerves. It made me feel like immersing in a better place and for these short moments after listening I was a better person until everyday stress caught up with me, but those moments were very precious. That is why I will go back to this book. Oh, one more thing, believe me, I look at my cat now from a little bit different perspective.

A lovely idea
But I'm sorry, David Michie, a male voice for a female cat just doesn't work, for me at least (unfortunately not all authors are the best narrators). The little anecdotes connected by the voice of the cat are a really nice idea. But there are a few really discordant moments, such as saying that the cat lapped up a bowl of milk. Any cat carer will tell you that milk is not a good thing for cats, it upsets their digestive systems with really unfortunate results. I know, it's a little thing, but as the book progressed I noticed more and more little irritants and the style of narration grated until I lost patience. I have great admiration for His Holiness the Dali Llama and had been anticipating a gentle book with a feline accent. This book is all that and more, and you may well find it charming, but it's not for me, I am returning it.

Simple, easily digestible message - bed time book!
Nothing profound, it's a Buddhist cat book let's be honest. But going in with that expectation will see you enjoying this little tale. a Buddhist Aesop's Fables.

LOVED IT!!!!! Wish I could give it 10 stars!
Learned so much about Buddhist principles through the quirky narration of a cat. I loved all the little stories HHC took me through and the realizations she made at the end of each of these moments in her life where she went through something or saw someone else go through something that caused her experience a realization through over-hearing Buddhist POV advice given to someone else about a similar problem. I do keep wondering how much input the Dalai Lama had in this book though because I want to know if these stories are based on real events and HHC's narration is assumed or if it's all just made up or assumed. It would mean a lot less to me if it was ALL made up. I hope it's not. because the stories were really real to me. They taught me a lot. ❤

Purrfect to listen to and teachings are profound.
The Teachings and Observations of a cat watching and sharing her life with the Dalai Lama. I found this ebook so much easier to listen to than reading. Purrfect for me to listen with noise-cancelling headphones, as I have a head injury.

Not for me.
Couldn't even get into our, let alone finish. It wasn't what I expected maybe and more of a story about a cat.

A wonderful introduction to Buddhist concepts
I found some of these chapters acutely applicable to some of the troubles I was experiencing and gave wonderful insights into alternative ways of viewing these experiences.
