Story
Waking up to discover the apocalypse had begun, and to find that I was no longer human, was not how I thought my day would go. But then again, I supposed I was thankful to just have another day to begin with, considering I’d apparently been a mindless monster for the last several months. The city was a mess, with many buildings destroyed by massive black towers that rose into the sky like enormous thorns. And yet, despite all this, I was about to discover that the monsters and bizarre landscape weren’t the strangest things about the apocalypse.

Tony Platz had the respect of his peers, a career on the fast track, and the body of an Olympian. There was only one problem: It was an open secret he carried a torch for his already-married partner. When a raid put her in the hospital and finally exposed her husband's ongoing infidelity, Tony got shipped out to Oolytau. Tayra Manes worked hard, graduated the academy, and became the first of her kind to join the Non-Human Investigative Corps. There was only one problem: She was a griffin, and not everyone approved of her being allowed to serve in the previously all-human NHIC.

Kevin Swift has the worst luck with women. It’s not that he’s unattractive or even unpopular. He just can’t talk to them. He blames it on all those shōnen love comedies he enjoys watching. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on who’s asking, Kevin’s love life is about to start looking up. After saving a fox’s life, Kevin discovers that he actually rescued a kitsune, a shape-shifter capable of transforming into a beautiful girl who appears to have popped right out of the pages of a shōnen manga. Her name is Lilian, and she apparently wants to mate with him.

Alex has come a long way in the fantasy world he now calls home. His sole skill has proven to be pretty overpowered, and he's built up some eyewatering stats during his grind of the dungeon. Not to mention he has two beautiful mages at his side. Now that the business with the Beastkin is over, they plan to head on back to the city, victorious. There's just the minor problem of getting back there, and once they do, perhaps Alex can finally return to the grind. If only things were so simple.

See this tattoo across my stomach? Yeah, the one with seven crazy runes. Ignore the pink one, that's Sarah. I love her, but she's not one of my four. That was a hard lesson to learn. I've met rune #1, and he wasn't at all what I'd expected. It wasn't love at first sight. Maybe hate at first sight. Pretty sure he hates my guts. But that's okay, maybe rune #2 will bring him around. This end of the world stuff is just getting started, and I have a feeling one of my very own sins is the one stirring the pot. The Incubus King, what sin might he be? Lust...my favorite one.

Prologue
By the time Heidi came running down the stairs, she had her entire family’s attention, but she ignored them as she ran directly toward me. She slowed down at the last second, slipping behind my back and grabbing my arm, as if she was trying to use me as a physical shield.
Needless to say, everyone was looking at her in alarm now.
Her face was bright red, her pulse visible in her neck, as she spoke up the moment that the guy following her made it halfway down the stairs.
“I have an announcement to make,” she said loudly, not looking at anyone directly. “Sam isn’t just Lexi’s coworker. He’s also my boyfriend.”
Absolute silence.
Painfully awkward silence.
“Oh,” her mother finally said loudly, a mixture of confusion and dread in her expression. “Heidi, sweetie, if he’s your boyfriend, then why didn’t you tell us?”
“Because,” Lexi announced, beginning to walk over, her expression determined. She waited until she was hooking my other arm before continuing. “He’s also my boyfriend,” she said bluntly.

A Man Wrote This
Honestly the character development was good. The superpowers are interesting. The storyline is unique. But it is clearly written by a man. *Spoiler alert and adult discussion* There is so much description of the female anatomy it detracts from the series. The worst thing the author could think of a woman doing was sleeping around before the relationship? Since when does a woman need forgiveness for that? And if one of the women isn't describing herself as "used goods" then they are a virgin. It's so misogynistic I had a hard time getting into the story. If that's something that triggers you, I would skip this series.

Best of the series...so far...
I absolutely love this series. Before I even say a word about the author or story though; proper respect to Christopher and Jessica. Thought they did a superior job with the roles and voices. Most especially the way they interacted with one another. They surely recorded together for the interactive parts, because I thought they were seamless. It speaks well of narrators when you don't need the authors descriptive text to tell you who is speaking anymore.
And while great narrators can elevate anything they put their talents to, they can't make bad stories awesome. Contrary-wise, terrible ones can make a superb story unbearable. Thankfully, in this case the story was a good one to start with, and their considerable talents just made it that much better.
I don't understand all the hubub, in some of the reviews, about the primary plot not progressing in this book. While I can agree that we didn't get much (read: any) in the way of closure on the main plot, I personally thought that there were several new bits and twists added to it. If this ends up being the last book in the series...okay...I'll gripe. But as a "middle book", I thought it was plotted and paced very well.
MINOR SPOILERS (and a very little bit of ranting) AHEAD:
The other thing that the reviews brought up more than once was the "slut-shaming" thing...and how terrible that was. At this point in my life I'm convinced that people just can't be happy if they aren't grumping about something. I've listened to this book twice now, and Winter is my favorite of Sam's wives / girlfriends. I never got the impression (not even once) that the author was beating up his own character about prior sexual experience (regardless of the amount of said experience). To the contrary, the way that Kurtis presented the character made me think she was not in the least bit ashamed of "having had sex", but was devestated that she wanted to Sam to be her one and only...and then her nature happened to her. The horrifying part was the dark place that she went to when she failed her own expectations of faithfulness. It almost made me think of a drug addict's downward spiral. I think Kurtis has a great character in Winter, and I hope to keep seeing (hearing) her get lots of page time.
If there's any complaint I have about the book...and this is truly minor...it's that Sam has enough women in his life now that giving all of them (most especially his original two) some good exposure has become almost forced. For the most part that's been fine with me. Personally, I find his later pairings to be more interesting than the earlier ones...and again...Winter is an incredibly solid (and personal favorite) addition to the mix.
So, okay. This series is not War and Peace folks. I mean, Kurtis is good...but let's have some realistic expectations here. There's a slow burn (and thus far interesting) overarching story, a lot of hooking up, and some fun "the family you choose" interactivity. If you don't like your described sex in man on woman (and a little woman on woman in the wings) form, pick a different series to invest your time in. But to label the author as misogynistic...when Sam literally accepts all of his women (rough patches and all) as they are...seems a bit irrational.
This has been a fun series, and easy series to get into. Hope Kurtis keeps up the great work. Would love to see a couple of these books drop yearly. Enjoy!

weird but okay
honestly it's hard to put my finger on it. Certainly there's a lot of potential and I know it's weird to say that on book 5. obviously if there wasn't something to like I wouldn't have read books 1 through 5. with that said though I don't know there's just something a little off. for my personal preferences it should take all the boxes but it's just weird. the writing's pretty good maybe the timing is off. the narration team is one of my favorites. I don't recall ever encountering something that worked on that wasn't well done for their part.

Series keeps getting better!
This is become one of my favorite series in the genre. Kurtis once again does an amazing job of stitching together the arc in the book as well as the overall story arch adding layers and detail that keep the reader glued to the series. I'm also really enjoying the overlaps from the omega squad series (really wish he's get the second book put on audible).

no progression on the main problem
although a great story. this book focuses more on the relationship between the main characters. The shadow organization that has been following or hero since the the first book, isn't really active at all in this book. Heck even the cliff hanger conversation that was promised between our hero and his friend, never takes place at all. I liked the story really did. however some of my questions from the previous book. never get answered. leading me to wait yet for another book.

Worth the credit.
Kurtis kinda lost me on this one. The four books prior ( which are really awesome) focused more on the story and less on the mc getting his itch scratched. Not so with this one.
There is a fine line in these types of books. Instead of a fantasy with a little adult thrown in, it's adult time with a dab of fantasy. Felt like succubus lord ( which are lame books btw).
Rose, was mostly left out of this book. Thats not good because it lowers the mc as a father.
Jessica and Christopher are awesome, and I will get the next book when it comes out.

I just don't know.
Series is amazing but he destroyed Winter a bit in this book. The book overall is much weaker then the rest and nothing really happens. It keeps piling up questions without any answers. No real character development with his core woman or child just sex over and over with the "new" woman in his life. Love Lili, Freya and Heidi. Liked Winter until half this book and Lexie is just well nothing more than a sad character.
The narrators is amazing as always. Christopher and Jessica just do an amazing job and they are my top favourite narrators.
