Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. Story
When 17-year-old Katy Swartz moved to West Virginia right before her senior year, she'd pretty much resigned herself to thick accents, dodgy Internet access, and a whole lot of boring, but then she spotted her hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up...until he opened his mouth. Daemon Black is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. It's hate at first sight, but when a stranger attacks her and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens. The hot guy next door? Well, he's an alien.

This was beyond amazing in typical JLA style
DS was my most expected book for this year and it was definitely worth the wait. I am such a crazy fan of Lux and have read the series more times that I could count. So being back in this world was like a dream come true, like coming home after being away for a while. I haven’t realized how badly I missed the whole gang. And my heart was overflowing with so many emotions the moment I stepped back in the Lux universe. And the audio is great. This voice is so Evie <3 Loved it <3
Luc was his typical overconfident, a little arrogant and a lot awesome self. I laughed a lot with him in here, but there was this sweet, caring, overprotective side of him that we saw a lot and it would absolutely make you swoon. He was just the perfect, dreamy BBF material.
I was kind of surprised at the beginning that the whole book was told from Evie’s POV, but her backstory was so intriguing that it sucked me in from page one. She seemed like the normal, regular kind of girl with very human hobbies and interests. But she was anything but that. There were lots of things about her that were revealed one after another and kept my interest to the very end. She was a true enigma and still is, even though lots of questions were answered there are a ton more that are still running in my mind.
The love between Luc and Evie was a slow-burning one and I really liked the fact he was so attentive and gave her the space she needed to come to terms with the relationship they were building. I never took him for the patient type, but apparently, he somehow changed through the years and grew a little in a very good way. Be prepared to sigh and drool a lot during this book.
But also expect a lot of action, some epic battles and some very intensive and nail-biting moments in typical JLA style. I absolutely forgot how awesome Luc was and the extent of his abilities. He showed some serious powers and I really enjoyed seeing him in fight-mode. He was awesome, as well as some other very well known friends who made an appearance.
Seriously, I wouldn’t have dreamt of a better spin-off to Lux series. I absolutely loved it. So many emotional moments, so many twists and turns, so many secrets revealed, so many new favorite characters made and so much more to come. All the feels, all the stars, top read for the year and a new favorite book couple. Great come-back in the Lux universe and holy alien babies, I need moreeeeeeee!

I would MAYBE recommend this.
Overall, it was very okay. Like, extremely average. Nothing was particularly wrong with the narrator, but oh my goodness, I had trouble with the writing. If I had a nickel for every time the author wrote “the side of Luc’s mouth kicked up” to describe his half smile, I’d be able to buy a house. Also, some of the same interactions occur VERBATIM in the book, which makes me think that the author either thinks I haven’t been paying attention to the ‘banter’, or that the heroine is JUST that dumb. She doesn’t re-write the narrator’s response, she just has her say the SAME EXACT THING.
I got this book because it sounded interesting, and because I was about to embark on a road trip, so I wanted to get a nice, long book. Everything about the book was just plain average. If you’re looking for a book that’ll keep you mildly entertained, but nothing more than that, this is the book for you.

I was confused - Spoilers in this review
First of all I wish the narrator would have listened to The Lux Series first. Since Daemon is the main character in the 5 book series. It just bugged me that she read his name as Daimon instead of Demon.
Second, the story line itself was too unbelievable. To think Sgt. Dasher could have any type of loving relationship with a Luxen.
Plus, in the Lux Series, Daemon asked where Dasher was and was told he died in the Vegas fight.
if he died in the Vegas fight which was before the Luxen invasion, he couldn't have been at the house when Evie was brought home because Evie was wherever Luc was during the invasion.
I love Jennifer Armentrout and J. Lynn but I really would've like the story to mesh with her original Lux version. There were many directions she could have gone without changing details.

Just your average teenager book
That narrator was an average performer. It was difficult to differentiate between different characters who were talking in a conversation because she wasn't able to change her voice well. The storyline and plot were simple and predictable. The hero was not really swoonworthy. He was nice, but not romantic enough. He was supposed to be the strongest guy but he still got his butt whooped bad. predictable predictable predictable! unfortunately, I lost interest in the first few chapters and went and listen ed to another audible book and made myself come back to finish this book because I can't leave books unfinished, even as awful as this one was. Sorry to all the fans, but this one was just MEH!

My god, this is terrible
That was my thought halfway through the first chapter. I kept going because I had just finiahed the Ash and Blood books so I knew Jennifer Amentrout could do better. But it really doesn't get better. I will preface by saying that I did not read the Lux series. These characters are so annoying, predictable and shallowly written. And the author clearly has no idea what modern teenagers sound like, the dialog is so cringey. Plus Luc gives off major Twilight/ 50 Shades vibes in that he is rude/overbearing and absolutely disrespectful of Evie's boundaries, under the guise of "I know you like it" and "I actually really do care about you." Super damaging message to be sending to young audiences.
The storyline could be good, but I don't know because I couldn't make it to the end.

Nice to finally have Luc's story.
I was always intrigued with Luc but I had a bit of difficulty separating the 19 yr old adult Luc, in this book to the Luc in Obsidian, with Daemon and Kat. He was about 15 back then and so immature and now, well, I had a hard time separating when he got intimate (not quite sex yet), I guess messed around more than just kiss Evie. I gave it a 4 star because there were several moments with Daemon in it. Lol. Narrator was pretty good, not great but it was doable.

Very Y/A
The writer is trying to reach a younger audience with references to “instagram” and using slang. It takes away from the story and makes it feel so immature. I couldn’t even finish the book because it felt like my middle school watt pad. I tried giving it a chance multiple times but it just wasn’t for me.

Almost
A teenage girl, a teenage(?) boy, 2 different species and a lot of, not very much. This was an almost book; almost because the two main characters, Luc and Evie, almost did a lot of things, but not quite. Also, this is a book, in my opinion, more suited to the younger listener.

Right onto book 2
So this is a new trilogy called Origin and it’s a spin off to the Lux series I read and loved years ago! I must have missed this or I would have read instantly. I got the audio version and Saskia Maarleveld did an amazing job narrating.
This takes place 5 years after the Luxen invasion. I feel I may have liked a re read of Lux as I know some characters are back but it didn’t stop my enjoyment at all. It’s definitely possible to read this trilogy without reading the Lux series first but trust me it is worth it.
The story starts with Evie and her friend going to a nightclub where the surviving Luxen and humans mix all in the hopes to see a girl her friend has a crush on. There she meets Luc who at first she believes to be Luxen but he is something more. Add in he knows exactly who she is even though she has never met him........or has she. Her almost normal life is about to get turned upside down. There will be lies or worse.... truths. Classmates will die and she will be in the thick of it. Great story. Right onto book 2.

so glad to be back with series.
thank you Jennifer, I was so happy to find this book and carry on with some of the other characters from my favourite Alien series.
Seeing how they have fought back after the invasion and where they are now and how strong they are without drawing the DOD back to their doorstep. But we will see on October 8th how this will pan out.
Loved reading the book within a weekend as needed a break from study, and this did not disappoint with excellent new characters being introduced along the side of old ones like Daemon etc.
The audible brought the book to life and the narrator was excellent in her mannerisms and story telling making it a thrilling read.

not my favourite, but certainly not bad
It was a decent book, but I certainly enjoyed the Blood & Ash series more.
Narrator was good.

Fantastic narrower awsome book
What and awsome book I love Jennifer L. Armentrout Lux series so when I found out this was a spin off from the lux series I was so excited Luc is such a great character but the book is written from Evie's point of view which is realy interesting because Origins can read minds so yeah awkward lol. The story it's self is fast pace and there is danger around every corner, and some mind blowing secrects coming Evie's way.
Book 2 of the Origin series Burning Shadows is also out from 8 of October 2019 so you wont have to wait for the next book in the series happy reading.

Loved it!
Hoping it's just the beginning of another journey into the world of the Luxen. The original series was enthralling. A real page turner. Definitely worth all those sleepless nights.
