A devastating attack destroys the power grid, plunging the country into chaos.

Nate Bauer and his pregnant wife Amy are bracing for the worst winter storm in a century, when a terrorist attack takes out the power grid, crippling the country at the worst possible moment.

With temperatures plummeting and law and order unraveling all around them, news soon emerges that the local nuclear power is on the brink of a meltdown.

Separated during the chaotic evacuation that follows, Nate soon finds himself alone in a frozen world racked by chaos and mounting levels of radiation. Traveling through this dangerous new world to reach his family and get them to safety will require guts, cunning, and every survival skill at his disposal.

Amazing

I enjoyed this book series, great main characters, ever evolving antagonists in different locations. Likable supporting character who went from gun shy to about her business laying waste to fools who tried her. The ending was predictable with the letter, I do which or hope we find out what happened to Nate's brother.

What I didn't like about the story was how quick the society collapsed. In less than a week we have corrupt cops, mobsters, and street gangs running the show. I mean what happened to the National Guard? Was there not tankers people could siphon gas from? I know that's nitpicking but the progression of events seemed odd when you had this massive nation crippling storm but somehow multiple factions rose and fell within a week's time.

Excellent writing

Weber is one of the best dystopian fiction writers I have read in a long time. This is the 2nd series I have read by him and the writing is superb. The storyline is engaging the character development is full and I highly recommend reading this series.

Enjoyable

Overall relevant storyline, a little far fetched at times; especially the family dynamic at the end. Otherwise good listen/read. The narrator was a little “Rod Serling-esq” at times but tolerable. Definitely filled with survival & prepping relevant tips and explanations. Worth the time.

Not a cohesive story

I will start with a positive and state that Gary Tiedemann’s narration was great.

This story felt hectic. You have a supposed prepped that isn’t prepared for anything, and literally has more side quest then call of duty. The MC has no real skills, and characters who are in one maybe two chapters in the whole book get dishes out these grad back stories or have powerful influences on the MC.

I wanted the book to be good, but it’s just crams so many different plots that it weighs the story down... did I mention that the teenage supporting character knows more about prepping after a 9 month stint with an uncle on year?? You have to suspend logic for 95% of the book. Also, things that seem obvious are overlooked and things that require more deductions seem obvious to the MC.

This is my experience, but for post apocalyptic reading or listening enjoyment I cannot recommend this book.
