Publisher's Summary
Everyone in Painters Mill knows the abandoned Hochstetler farm is haunted. But only a handful of the residents remember the terrible secrets lost in the muted/hushed whispers of time - and now death is stalking them, seemingly from the grave.
On a late-night shift, Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is called to the scene of an apparent suicide - an old man found hanging from the rafters in his dilapidated barn. But evidence quickly points to murder and Kate finds herself chasing a singularly difficult and elusive trail of evidence that somehow points back to the tragedy of that long-ago incident.
Meanwhile, Kate has moved in with state agent John Tomasetti and for the first time in so long, they're both happy; a bliss quickly shattered when one of the men responsible for the murders of Tomasetti’s family four years ago is found not guilty and walks away a free man. Will Tomasetti be pulled back to his own haunted past?
When a second man is found dead - also seemingly by his own hand - Kate discovers a link in the case that sends the investigation in a direction no one could imagine and revealing the horrifying truth of what really happened that terrible night 35 years ago, when an Amish father and his four children perished - and his young wife disappeared without a trace. And, as Kate knows - the past never truly dies…in The Dead Will Tell by Linda Castillo.

Yet again, narration kills it for me...
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
A different narrator.
Would you ever listen to anything by Linda Castillo again?
Yes, if different narrator.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I hate when the narrator tries to "act out" the different voices. Ex: She used a baby voice that sounded absolutely ridiculous. I couldn't even finish the book, and it was probably a good story. Thank God Audible let's you return stuff!

Another Great Installment To The Series
When I read "Her Last Breath" which was a related setting and story to the "Dead Will Tell" there was a three chapter preview to this book. After reading this preview I just had to buy it to see what happened and since I read the other book I wanted to know what happens with Kate and Tomasetti's relationship. Once I had this book on my Kindle it kept my interest as the plot developed that I finished it in a few days. It is a good read, a suspenseful mystery and a setting that makes one feel that they are right in the heart of Ohio's Amish country east of Mansfield. Even though Painter's Mill is fictitious I felt like I had travelled there when I visited Holmes County several summers ago. Linda's Amish setting gives one a great descriptive story of Amish culture and she develops a great murder mystery around it. This is a great listen that will not disappoint! I look forward to more of Linda Castillo's Kate Burkholder Series.

Boring narrator kills the story
I suspect that this might be a good book but the narrator is so flat and unemotional, that I found myself drifting off everytime I listened to it. The narrator is also not very good at varying the voice of her characters. It is more challenging for female narrators to "voice" male characters but this narrator really does a poor job. The men all sound alike.
Maybe I'll borrow the book from my library!

Not Awful, But Clumsy and Exaggerated
These books have an interesting premise and intriguing protagonist. However, the writing is heavy-handed, and the author doesn't have a believable grasp of either the Amish or of police procedure. After listening to three books, I keep expecting the writing to improve. Disappointingly, it feels like Ms. Castillo has found a marginally adequate formula and is determined to cling to it instead of trying to reach a higher level.
The narration is likewise adequate, but hasn't improved. Despite my hopes for the characters and the concept, I'm going to look elsewhere.

I love to listen to Linda Castillo books!
What made the experience of listening to The Dead Will Tell the most enjoyable?
Linda Castillo's books are like works of art and should be enjoyed with good wine and silence. She is so good at depicting the lives of the Penn. dutch or Amish if you prefer. I grew up very close to the Amish and remember as a child one of the mother's bring her daughter to us. We rushed her to the hospital with pneumonia, against the ordinance. They are harsh to some but there is something special about living a simple life with God. Her books are always well written and have "killer" plots. This one is really twisted and unpredictable.

Love the book don't like the mud.
I love this series I love the way that the relationships are developing but I feel short changed by the action in the later books and this one is no exception, there isn't quite enough plot in each one, and too much action. Hang on I will explain, how many more times can Kate get completely beaten up?
Its a real shame because she is such a good puzzle solver, she has a unique perspective and setting in a time period that could be contemporary anytime in the last 150 years and yet..... we are back to slugging it out in the mud on a dark & rainy night... again..... Does it ever stop raining in Ohio?
Will I buy the next one? Yes I will, as I said at the beginning I love this series especially Kates journey.

The Dead Will Tell
When a man is found hung in his barn, Kate Burkholder, Painter’s Mill Chief of Police, like most people, assumes that it is suicide. However, an artifact found on the body points to an old mysterious event when 4 children and their father died. More twists and turns develop as the story unfolds.
Kate and John Tomasetti’s relationship faces more obstacles. Ghosts from his past raise their ugly heads.
I really enjoy this police procedural series and Kathleen McInnerny’s audio narration is superb.
