Great story, wonderful characters & narration

I have a lot of love and tenderness for this book. There’s something about it that speaks of a new era and gives me hope. It’s been a really interesting experience, listening to it now, a little over a year after it first came out and Milena McKay burst onto the lesfic scene. So much has happened since then, a novella, a second novel that is now in the running for multiple awards, a third one coming soon (A Whisper of Solace, April 12th). McKay has grown tremendously as an author over this period and yet there’s already so much wonderfulness in this debut.
I love Jamie’s big heart and, of course, I love Vivian’s sharp tongue and tenderness and the vulnerability she doesn’t hide that well. Hearing her now, I feel like I understand her better than I did a year ago. Unsurprisingly, Abby Craden‘s narration is fantastic. Jamie’s voice reflects her wide-eyed youth and tenacity. Vivian’s is at once haughty and warm, perfectly embodying the complexity of the character. The secondary characters shine just as much and I’m particularly fond of Arabella, even more than when I read the book.
If Milena McKay’s precise writing and wonderful characters didn’t already have my whole heart, with this audiobook and Abby Craden’s narration, they would now.

An astoundingly good debut novel!

5+ stars
I read this debut by Milena McKay in February of 2021 and knew immediately she was an author to watch. I was blown away by the quality and depth of this, her first novel. And it was no fluke - she followed it up with The Headmistress that same year and has already cemented herself as one of the best lesfic authors in the genre.
As much as I loved reading this, listening to it was even better. And all because Abby Craden does longing and angst like nobody's business. While there are sometimes calls for more variety in who narrates lesbian audiobooks, I will just say if someone can do what Craden does, bring her on. However, she's a unique talent that digs deep to bring these stories to life and only a handful of narrators can accomplish it.
Her DeVor is just fabulous. Her voice, the ice queen persona, the tremendously gifted artist. The woman who has been so hurt in her past that she is afraid to open her heart to anyone again. And in investigative journalist Jamie Walker, she brings out her determination, her desire to tell the story that needs to be told and the longing she has for the enigmatic woman who is the subject of her exposé.
This book is so layered. While it is a romance, it's also a mystery. A Me Too story. A story of bravery. Of overcoming enormous challenges. Of being willing to do what must be done for the greater good.
If you haven't experienced this book yet, I can't recommend it highly enough. I believe the audio version raises the quality of the work - which was outstanding to begin with. I would be quite happy if Craden becomes the voice of McKay's work. Like Noyes/Craden and Winter/Dawe, they are made for each other.

Absolutely Gorgeous!

Abby Craden is one of my all time favorite Narrators and in this thrilling audiobook she does not disappoint. The story is riveting, beautiful, seductive, empowering, and all together absolutely gorgeous! The characters are rich and multifaceted. This story was so engaging it was really hard to put on pause. My wife and I spent several nights staying up till very late to listen. We both thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook.

If you enjoyed "The Devil Wears Prada" and are looking for a lesbian love story version (with a little justice for SA victims mixed in), then this story is absolutely for you.

Another winner from McKay and Craden

Beautiful writing by Milena McKay, perfect voices provided by Abby Craden…. Truly a dynamic duo in the audiobook world. I’ve got a serious book hangover thanks to The Delicate Things We Make, but it could not be more worth it.

So good I had to actually leave a review

Truly amazing book ... I couldn't put it down and never saw any of the twists and turns coming. First time listen from this author, and it won't be my last. She did a tremendous job at weaving a very "serious and some what touchy" subject into a beautifully written love story. Wonderfully narrated by Ms. Craden per usual, so no surprise there. She is by far one of the best in the business...I particularly enjoy the depth and different inflections she gives each character. Overall 10/10 would recommend.

Can’t wait to read again

The elusive artist and the journalist whose mission it is to out her…This story is excellent and Abby Craden’s narration is sublime. The steamy scenes were HOT without venturing into bdsm. I wanted both of them. I wanted to be both of them. I wanted to be any of the characters to watch this unfold for real.

Multiple rapes mentioned but do not occur in scene, but is still a main topic feature in the second half.

Well worth a read. Milena is now on my watch list. Abby Craden could read ads and make them sound fabulous.... but these two together make a dream team.

The storyline certainly stirred my interest and captured my thoughts. I started it this morning in the car and just finished it at home...

Yet again taken on a journey of exploration and purpose. I look forward to another from Milena...

Also, Abby has done something wonderful... her voice allowing me the experience of so many emotions exposed... she wows me every time...

literature excellence

the most amazing book in genre I've ever read, at one point I was pacing my room such was the intensity, never in any genre of 600 audible books has this happened, abby craden gives her best performance to add to it's power, but it's milena mckays' superb writing of romance and a despicable fault in men, that had me riveted, and yes I'm male, superb book I'll read again and again.

Stellar author!

I’ve recently dove head first onto les-fic and have listened to lots and lots of different authors.. Milena McKay is one of my tops!

Her stories are incredible, they captivate you in the most heart warming and realistic way (compared to some other authors out there) and the pairing of Abby Craden as the narrator.. blows my mind.

Outstanding writing and spurred me to write my first proper review on here too so thank you 🙏🏻

Both available books of Mckay’s on Audible will not disappoint, also anything read by Craden.. get it now 👍🏻

Delicately woven indeed

I'm so glad Milena McKay's books are being turned into audiobooks as well. She has a gift for crafting such intricate stories with detailing that draws you into each scene. Couple that with the talents of Abby Craden, I feel like I'm listening to a movie! With my mind visualising the scenes.

I enjoyed the concept of the fashion industry taking its lead/inspiration from art. Not sure if it actually works like that in reality. This is an age gap romance, with the angst being driven from realistic experiences as opposed to miscommunication between the MCs that we often come across in other books. And both MCs show depth of character, display strength and stand up for each other in their own way.

Abby's sultry voice for Vivian is beautiful. I was hooked. Especially the way she says Jameson. AC is one of my favourite narrators and I have a number of books narrated by her. I'm pleased to hear a slightly different voice here in that of Vivian.

Can't wait for the audible version of Whisper of Solace. Please record and release that soon! Hopefully with either Abby Craden, Angela Dawe or Lori Prince as narrator.

Bloody Brilliant

Oh me oh my. I’ve read this story more than a few times and absolutely love it. However Abby Craden reading it to me made me fall head over heels in love with the book all over again. Her DeVor voice is so Beautiful she made me melt. This book is a stunning piece of work. It tackles a hard topic, with respect and dignity and makes it into the most amazing story. It lifts you up, knocks you down and makes you melt. It has everything a great romance needs as well as a gritty storyline that draws you in and leaves you breathless. This is Milena McKay’s 1st novel yet you would never know it. This author is astounding and is one to look out for. 5 stars are more than deserved

What a wonderful performance by Abby Craden who brought the characters and words of a wonderful book to life. Ok, so there was always going to be a happy ending, but the journey to the conclusion kept me wanting to keep listening, and even wanting more.

Amazing!

I had a feeling this would have been a good read and I wasn’t disappointed. This is the difference between a predictable lesbian romance and a well written one so few and far between these days. My first listen from this author but was swayed knowing Abby Craden was narrating it was fabulous I absolutely recommend 👌

A Satisfactory Listen

The story "The Delicate Things We Make" is predominantly a romance (insta love / heartbreak / redemption / reconciliation) with a little mystery thrown in.

The first several chapters had me flummoxed. With the fast paced informationally (artistic & fashion) dense narrative, I was confused. Should I be hurriedly scribbling notes in a vain attempt to help pass an impending examination? In relation to the story, I thought it excessive.

Whilst, the underlying storyline share commonality with tales of this genre, the story offers freshness and thus some uniqueness. The author's wordsmith ability definitely improved my enjoyment, during listening to this tale.

Several of the "sex scenes" could be considered quite graphic. I thought them more carnal lust rather than representative of love. I found little evidence of tenderness, gentleness, understanding (communication) and care between the "lovers". Yet, love is mentioned a few times.

The narration was a little fast for my liking. For myself, tweaking the Audible app led to disappointing results (change of pitch distortion). I frequently revisted the narration to improve my understanding of the narration. I thought that all the individual characters were portrayed with good expression and in keeping with the storyline. Generally, a satisfactory performance.

Overall, an enjoyable listen which demanded a greater level of concentration and replay.

Great story and narration!!!

Third book I've listened to by this author and narrated by Abby Craden! Very enjoyable..not sure if this or Whispers of Solace (cleverly, also a chapter title in this book) is my number one. This story is single perspective but you actually get a lot of information about other characters etc...no hidden motives or mysteries as such. Jamie and Vivian are very lovable and interesting characters. You appreciate their strengths and vulnerabilities. Arabella is one of my favourite characters but the other secondary characters are also engaging. The story keeps moving forward and doesn't get bogged down in useless angst or long winded contemplations. I personally appreciate the decisiveness of this story.
The narration is top notch as is all of AC's work! Her narration technique and voices for each character are always ALWAYS impeccable. She is brilliant. Nothing else to say really.

Loved this book, the passion, drive and the artworld, the characters were always interesting and sexy.

5 Stars!

The Delicate Things we make is one of those books that, as i'm reading I can't help but wander how a writer has gotten to be so good at their craft as to be able to imagine a story with so much detail.

Milena McKay is one of those writers, and this is her debut novel????

The story follows Jamie, the down on her luck journalist, and the reclusive artist Vivian as they meet and form a bond under not so honest circumstances.

This story is beautiful and breathtaking and tragic and sweet. It is everything I love in a good book and after reading this one and The Headmistress, McKay has cemented her place as one of those all time great fiction writers.
