The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Eric didn't ask to be a vampire. In fact he didn't even believe in them. Biting your own tongue with your fangs does a lot of convincing. Even so, being a part-time undead isn't as easy as you might think. It can let you hold down a day job, true, but sometimes the night "life" can be more than a little difficult, what with those bloodthirsty urges and predatory instincts kicking in.

Story
Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Publisher's Summary
At 15, Chance Fortunato has seen more evil than most people ever will. Indentured by his father to the demon count Dulka, he's been taught dark magic and forced to do his infernal master's dirty work for eight years. But now Chance has figured out a way to defeat his master and free himself.
His new life with his mother and sister is far from easy, and freedom has its own perils. Normal life is hard enough, but even in a mundane-looking high school, there are paranormal threats from both sides of the mystical fence.
When his new mentor is murdered, Chance knows he is the only one who can track the killer down. To bring his mentor's killer to justice, Chance will have to fight evil on its own terms and discover if that makes him a hero...or a monster.

Trust your gut, ignore some of the comments
This was a well written story. I almost didn’t download it because of some comment comparing the book to others and because a couple readers said it “sexualized 15 year olds.” I understand the first to some extent, but most genres have similarities and a base story that really developed the genre. We have to expect authors to use what becomes the norm. The second concern, I just don’t see. I was expecting to cringe. If I had not read the comments, I would not have even thought about it while I listened to the story. Like many other comments I’ve seen for other books, something in the story caused the commenter to overlay their personal experiences and they blame the author.
Go with your gut and enjoy a well written story.

It has heavy subjects that may turn some away
I realy liked this book, its not often that a MALE MC can in truth tell a ra*ed girl that he understands.
Its not just the girl lived and now they jump in bed and all the trauma is gone..
The book dosnt revel in it. But it happend and is a strong driving force for the mc.
I dont know what people think is good YA, but I think I would have loved to read this when I was a kid,
The magic is cool and not too soft.
The mc is a bit dumb at times, but hey he is 15 and have lived cut of from movies and the like for 8 years,
I forgive him for not understanding things we see from chapter 2 ;)

Not a bad book.
Never read the books that people are comparing this one too. But referring to it as "This book but the porn version" is super misleading. This book has the sexual content you would expect from the mind of a teenage mind. No graphic sex or anything more than references to body parts.
All in all I'd say listen to this while you wait for the next book in your favorite series or when you have 10 hours to lose and need something light. A book that doesn't require you paying attention 100 percent the whole time.

Bland and an hard to get into
It was a struggle to listen to. I like to give books a chance, but this one dragged. The concept seemed interesting, but the story and dialogue was bland.
Wouldn't recommend. Also SOB as an insult was way overused. It became grating to hear every time it was used.

Great plot; Senseless sexual assult/rape scenes
This book doesn't understand what genre/age-range it is trying to hit on. The characters in this book are in high school (aka 15 years old) and the general feel of the book is a Young Adult fantasy with some dark undertones to it, yet it has countless sexual assault scenes and even a rape scene on one of the characters. I honestly don't get where the author was trying to go with this book. It took way too dark of a turn for Young Adult books, yet it doesn't have the feel or the age-range of the characters for a reader in their 20s or older to really get into it. Especially since characters make decisions that only a teen could really understand (so you get pissed at all the terrible decisions they make).
I honestly just don't get where the author was going with this book. If he took out most of the sexual assault scenes and the rape scene then the book would be great for darker young adults. If he made all the characters in their 20s or 30s then it would be great for older adults since they could stomach it easier and for the adults that like darker books. Right now it basically just sounds like a dark child soft-core porno and i feel awkward even just as someone in my early 20s reading it lol.

A very good YA book.
This YA urban fantasy book follows a similar plot to many others. Another very very similar book I can point to is Sweet Blood of Mine. Doesn't fit in at first before being taken in by the goth crowd. !B and other football players have it out for him. Principle and football coach doesn't like him for roughing up QB. Other scenes play out in very similar ways. Of course the plot and characters are different but I can't help but notice the similarities. By comparing the two I would say that I prefer this book. I hope that the other books in the series are released and not locked behind the "Not Yet Avaliable" status for all eternity like it is for Book 3 of Renegade X. It's been 2 years drop book 3 already!

its wholesome
honesty I didn't listen this book due to the reviews until recently. The book centers around our MC that wants to make his Mother happy and a bunch of magical mishaps happen. Its a simple dresden style book for teens. The core problem with the book is the main characters tragic backstory. Even after experiencing it in the book, his past keeps being brought up so much I began composing a melody on the world's smallest violin. You just can't care after its brought up for the literal 15th time.

Awful story, horribly written and not worth it
Riddled with incel-style "that teen girl should have seen ima great guy" nonsense. The ideas are ill-formed and the entire story is a big "my dad will regret being mean to me one day!"
This is the kind of writing that should have stayed on Tumblr.

I have seen worse, yes but...
This is a quintessential example of the author's high school revenge fantasy. It has everything, good teachers, teachers of evil and doom. Fiendish, evil Jocks and the trophy girl misfit MC kid is lusting over and needs saving. It's perfect at being bad.
All the teen rape and torture talk didn't help endear the book to me much either.

Worth a try
The first book in a series. It is a story of a 15-year old boy with magic. There is a variety of monsters, a bit of romance and a bit of detective work. Albeit the culprits are obvious for the reader, but not for the boy. Despite the rather obvious storyline, the book was enjoyable. The narrator was good and made the audio version a pleasure to listen to.

Love it !
I’m assuming this book has been written for the Young Adult or Teen market but at 52 I am very definitely neither.
I absolutely adored it . Really good plot line and world building, with well rounded characters who you really wanted to hear develop in future books. Harry Potter esque in the way it’s building but with very definite shades of Ben Aaronovich, which is a very good pedigree.
Can’t wait to hear / read the rest of the books 😊

Pleasantly surprised
Well read with good narration and characterisation. I thought it was going to be yet another supernatural teen angst story with elements of darkness, but it turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable listen. The main protagonist is likable in a deadpool sort of way, but feels bad about his actions when pushed to do something he's trying to get away from. Having listened to this book I'm seriously considering going forward in the series.

Good. A teenager in high school but Harry Potter it’s not!
I’m an old lady so prob not it’s target audience. I listen to a lot of urban fantasy. This is good. The story didn’t go quite the way as I expected it too. And.. most importantly though there is a love interest, there’s not loads and loads of ripped demon bodies and “ OMG she doesn’t realise just how beautiful she is” or just plain Porn.
The story has good flow and leaves us ready for the next book.
And… it was free too … brilliant

KAZ 🇬🇧💜😃 AWESOME 📖 BUT!! 🤔
I have purchased the whole series of these book's & they're really good 👍 my only complaint is we're supposed to believe that Chance the main character & his mate's are just teenager's so why's there so much bloody sexual reference's? It's not needed & it really got on my flipping nerve's I mean C'MON enough already Love 💙 the story great character's who practice magic fight demon's as well as shape shifter's definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoy's stuff like I've just mentioned 💜😃 Glad I stuck with the whole series awesome 👍 narrator well worth a credit 4+ out of 5 😃❤️😃

A good series
I found this series engaging and sometimes gripping. It's well written and read. In a coherent 2010s universe, a troubled hero fights to save friends, family, strangers and the world from evil.
It's been an enjoyable diversion for me, though it's not quite perfect. I found just a few moments felt unnecessarily "young adult" even considering we start with a 15 year old protagonist.

A cool concept ruined by poor taste
I love books that get a bit wacky. I can forgive subpar technical writing if I'm having fun and the story is still carried through.
I read a lot of reviews on this saying this had some very concerning takes on sex, partically in relation to teen girls. I also read a lot of reviews saying it wasn't so bad, it's just that its from the perspective of a teenage boy and they're horny. I gave it a go because I can over look a lot of stuff for a fun story I'm not going to take to seriously.
I got through the first 3ish hours of this book, which featured some bad takes on woman that I could overlook and move past. But I couldn't move pass the protagonist watching through a window as a young woman is coerced to undress so she can be assaulted as he seesaws between calmly trying to decide if he going to help in anyway and how pretty her matching under set is on her. I got no further than this. Really bad vibes that left me feeling dirty. If there was a narrative purpose or character development that would be prompted by this, I would not be leaving this review. But there isn't. It just happens. And this isn't something you should put into a story just cause, and not in the way it was done.
A great concept that would make a great YA book if written by someone else.
