Story
There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices.

Millions of people take calcium and Vitamin D supplements thinking they're helping their bones. The truth is, without the addition of Vitamin K2, such a health regimen could prove dangerous. Without Vitamin K2, the body cannot direct calcium to the bones where it's needed; instead, the calcium resides in soft tissue, like the arteries, leading to a combination of osteoporosis and atherosclerosis, or the dreaded "calcium paradox".

Among Americans, diabetes is more prevalent today than ever. Obesity is at epidemic proportions; nearly 10% of children are thought to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. And sugar is at the root of these, and other, critical, society-wide, health-related problems. With his signature command of both science and straight talk, Gary Taubes delves into Americans' history with sugar: its uses as a preservative, as an additive in cigarettes, the contemporary overuse of high-fructose corn syrup.

Story
Several years ago the author, cardiologist Thomas E. Levy, MD, JD, was asked to assist Hal Huggins, DDF, with a number of Dr. Huggins's dental patients. Each of the patients was quite ill and obviously suffering with one or more very serious medical conditions. Prior to sedating each patient, Dr. Huggins asked Dr. Levy to administer a specific protocol of vitamin C. Dr. Levy had never performed, or even heard of such a practice, but was greatly impressed as each patient left the dental office markedly improved - many were asymptomatic.

Publisher's Summary
Throughout the years, dental health has often been characterized as a reflection of our overall health, where bad oral health results from issues with other parts of our body. But what if we flipped the paradigm? What if we thought about dental health as the foundation for our physical health as a whole?
Dr. Steven Lin, an experienced dentist and the world's first dental nutritionist, has analyzed our ancestral traditions, epigenetics, gut health, and the microbiome in order to develop food-based principles for a literal top-down holistic health approach. Merging dental and nutritional science, Dr. Lin lays out the dietary program that can help ensure you won't need dental fillings or cholesterol medications — and give you the resources to raise kids who develop naturally straight teeth. With our mouth as the gatekeeper of our gut, keeping our oral microbiome balanced will create a healthy body through a healthy mouth.
Dr. Lin arms you with a 40-day meal plan, complete with the Dental Diet food pyramid, exercises for the mouth, recipes and cooking techniques to help you easily and successfully implement his techniques into your everyday life. The tools to improve overall wellness levels and reverse disease are closer than we think — in our markets, in our pantries, and, most frequently, in our mouths — if not just a well-chosen bite or two away.

Introductory; disappointing for the well-read
This is your basic paleo nutrition book with phrases like “this also applies to your mouth” added in. There is a nice discussion of Weston A. Price -- great stuff if you're not familiar, but if you are, don't expect any new info here.
I really wish there were less rehashing of basic paleo ideas and more information about dental health.
I finished the book and didn’t gain any insights on issues related to standards of care in dental or periodontal medicine. I now know this dentist’s regurgitated opinions related to the food guide pyramid and lipid-heart hypothesis, but I don’t know which (if any) mouthwashes may be helpful, how to rehab receded gums, or whether topical applications of any nutrients can help with tooth decay.

Finally a discussion of root cause and how to fix it
For years I have wondered what is causing so much illness and diseases in us and The dental diet says it quite simply and beautifully. Nutrition, it has everything to do with our health. Which the very definition of the word means free from illness and injury in Webster’s.
My chiropractor has a sign that says there is no wonder the word heal is in the word health. Many on line health bloggers tell us all disease start in our gut, our digestive system, not genetic or hereditary but digestive. This book explains it all concerning our mouth and teeth. I have talked to my dentist and periodontist and refreshing to know the practitioners can learn outside the box and teach their patients.
Great read from someone who needed this years ago.

I like books written from passion, curiosity, and functional useability. This is a trifecta audiobook. It's worth your time listening nand the PDF is 70 pages of great material. Go on. what are you waiting for . . . a tooth to fall out? Order it. I wish I would have 3 years earlier. Steven reads his own book and he's a down to earth dentist. Outstanding
Would you listen to The Dental Diet again? Why?
Absolutely!!Steven has beautifully brought together all of the information and research that I've also been tirelessly searching for in one easy to read book. Being in the dental field myself and having an inquisitive mind I it answers a lot of questions that I ask about patients on a day to day basis. Its easy to digest and it excites me for the future of dentistry.
What did you like best about this story?
Everything, especially using easy to understand anecdotes to explain processes in the body. This will allow patients and clinicians to understand the content easier
Have you listened to any of Steven Lin’s other performances? How does this one compare?
I've listened to Steven on podcasts and I'm pleased he's done the audible version himself and not got a narrator. It's much more genuine.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I nodded all the way through and kept thinking 'This man thinks like I do' and everything he has written backs up all the research I've been doing myself. I'm so excited for the future of dentistry in prevention rather than cure.
Any additional comments?
It's a breath of fresh air to know that there are clinicians out there who think the same way. Food is medicine but food can be poison. I'm searching for the right advice to give patients and this book is a good starting point for anyone on the beginning of their journey. Well done Steven......keep fighting the fight

Interesting hypothesis, but no real science here. Need to read around the subject a lot to be sure that there are any advantages to the dental diet as the science was really ignored here. A lot of anecdotal evidence. Raises some interesting ideas about modifications to the diet though.

Interesting and informative in the way the facial muscles and bones work and what nutrients we need but that’s about it
I found some useful information about the way our facial muscles and bones work, and what nutrients we need to keep our teeth from rotting, but I don’t believe the dietary recommendations were necessarily looked into deep enough.. (cured meats anyone?) also the emphasis on the need for vegetables, meats and dairy to be organic I think should have been much greater, as most inorganic butter, meats and even vegetables tend to lose a LOT of their valuable nutrition content during commercialisation, and some even add horrible chemicals that will do more harm than good once consumed. Overall not a bad audiobook, good for someone starting out on their health journey, very informative for someone who doesn’t know the links between diet and teeth rotting

dentist review
As a dentist i have great respect for Steven's work and i think this topic is very important, my only criticism is that it was not written and presented in a captivating way which would help in spreading the message farther.
Great information and very relevant in today's world.

A must listen
I first heard about Steven’s work on a couple of health & wellness podcasts, I then proceeded to listen to his other interviews before purchasing this audiobook. The way he puts the link between oral/dental health with the rest of the body really hits the message home. I found the information surrounding the diet and common dental problems (crooked teeth, crowding etc) really fascinating. I highly recommend you read/listen to this. I purchased a hard copy as well so I can easily refer back to specific chapters.
