Story
On Christmas Eve, DCI Mackenzie Jones is called to a shooting at a remote farmhouse. Ralph Mallender believes his father lies dead inside. When three more bodies are discovered, it's clear a festive family gathering has turned into a gruesome tragedy. Publisher's Summary
Introducing your new crime thriller fix: Bristol detective DS George Cross, champion of the outsider, the voiceless and the dispossessed.
DS George Cross can be rude, difficult and awkward with people. But his unfailing logic and dogged pursuit of the truth means his conviction rate is the best on the force. So when his police colleagues dismiss the death of a man as a squabble among Bristol's homeless community, Detective Sergeant George Cross is not convinced.
Who was the unknown man whose weather-beaten body is discovered on Clifton Downs? Did the tragedy that led to a life on the streets also lead to his death?
As he delves into the dead man's past, Cross becomes convinced that to catch this killer, he needs to solve a cold case murder from years before. A murder that someone has got away with for 15 years....

Unique Detective Story
Intriguing first outing for a detective with Asperger's. He frustrates his colleague with his fixation on detail and consistency in evidence, but gets results. Bristol-based (as a change from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds or Edinburgh) it had quite a few twists and unexpected turns along the way. It will be good to follow the series and to find out more about Cross, his colleague Ottey who struggles to cope with his eccentricities and his boss Dawson, who wants results even at the expense of the facts not quite being to hand. Not forgetting his patient father. Recommended and led me straight to his second book, The Cyclist.
John Heffernan was excellent with the delivery of the story

IT'S BEEN DONE
A main character having Asperger syndrome, such as the cop in this novel (or the physician in the TV show "Dr. House" and Sheldon Cooper on "The Big Bang Theory" and Lisbeth Salander in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” and Forrest Gump, etc.) has been greatly overdone in recent years, so it was surprising that this author went with Asperger's for his character in "The Dentist". I quit listening to the audiobook after the first hour or so because the cop was so unlikeable, which the author blamed on Asperger's but was really just an excuse for a poorly written character. I do not recommend this audiobook at all.

Most unlikeable character.
Okay, so thought i would give this a try as it is the first in a new series. Have to say it was not to my liking. I do not have any personal experience of a friend or family member with this particular affliction but I think if I did, they would not use it as an excuse for anything. For me, the excuses made for why or why not this was done or not done was very pervasive and irritating. It was almost like the disease was a character itself!
Your readers understand that he has a condition that makes it very hard for him to function. But really! Won't be reading anymore!! I returned it.

Love this
I listened to this per a recommendation I read and I was so pleasantly surprised. I loved everything about it. I loved the characters, love George Cross. It was good in every way. Not bloody or gory. Happily none of that. But just good writing and engaging characters. And this book was read beautifully. I will read all the audiobooks with this character and hope audible records the ones they have not yet.

I bought this on sale so I was a bit leery about it actually being good (so many Audible sale books are junk). Once I started listening, I realized I was in for a treat! I love the main character (we all know people like him) and the rest of the characters were well-developed too. The story kept me guessing and the narrator was outstanding! I’ve already bought the second in the series.

Murder mystery
Really enjoyed this audible book First time with this author.
Two murders many years apart in the same family .DS Cross weaves a web on years of lies and cover up over decades. The author does an excellent review of character development of someone with Asbergers on the Spectrum of Autism. Not always easi!y recognized but really annoying to his coworkers and terrifying to his clients. He gets results.
I hope there is a other DS Cross book soon
I liked the narration .He had a calm reassuring voice.

Quite enjoyable.
I look forward to the next. I very much enjoyed the characters and found that they all meshed quite well. The story was a good one , although nothing “new”, really. Still, the way it was all woven together was very good. George Cross, is a very, very good character and although I do not have any personal knowledge of Asperger’s Syndrome, I have read a few other novels where characters have this, this one is best so far. Particularly, because of the way it was presented and how it was perceived by those around him. Again, quite enjoyable and definitely recommended.

I really enjoyed this audio book, a really well written story with a plot that just rolled out piece by piece. The cast of characters were a joy to discover and follow.
My one small problem was that they were not described physically, this always helps me to picture them in my mind as the story unfolds.

Addictive
I have really enjoyed this series and The Dentist is no exception. I use my audio books while walking and find myself annoyed by traffic noise and the like. Hard to pause when I get home. I even find myself being a bit "DS Cross like" over the rest of the day. Sullivan's characters are real and complex. Highly recommended.
