Publisher's Summary

Brains, guts, and ruthless ambition should be enough for a woman to come out on top in any fight. Except when the battle is over love, all bets are off. Cain Casey was groomed from birth to take the reins of the Casey family enterprises, which just happens to be one of the major crime organizations in New Orleans. Surviving by never turning away from a fight and knowing how to win at all costs, Cain is as careful with her heart as she is with her business - until she meets Emma Verde. The farm girl from Wisconsin puts a hit out on Cain's heart and leads her down a dangerous road filled with great joy and devastating sorrow. The Devil Inside is the story of unexpected passion, a shattering betrayal, and the challenge of love put to the test. First in the Cain Casey Saga.

Great Story- poor narration

What did you love best about The Devil Inside?

The story line about a female gangster and her love for her family

What did you like best about this story?

It keeps you interested

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Trying to do voices which sounded like adolescents. A FBI agent needs to sound like she is older than 12 years old.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Cain saved Emma from being shot even though they were estranged

Any additional comments?

I would like to see the rest of this series in audible but with a different narrator

Awesome story!!

I love this book and have thought after reading it numerous times that it should been made into an audiobook. Now that it is it makes the story that much better. I love the series and wish there was another so we would know what the next Casey baby is.

A Hit

I love Ali Vali. I think she does a great job and I enjoy the action she has in her books and the main characters. Can we get a different narrator though, please! I just think these books and series can be a hit with someone else narrating it. This is why it lacked a 5 star. But, I loved the book and can't wait till the others come out on audio!

Terrible narration and love interest

Many other reviews have hit on the poor narration so I'll leave that alone. The problem that caused me to give up this book before finishing it is how awful Emma is and how little she deserves the forgiveness that the author is trying to push both the reader and Cain to give her. I understand relationships failing and then trying to recover but leaving her son without a word, not considering that her wife maybe just maybe wasn't lying about not killing her rapist, running off and hiding a pregnancy and daughter from her wife, not bothering to call or even keep up with the rest of her family enough to know that her wife's sister was raped and murdered by her own attempted rapist (obviously still alive btw), staying away for 4 years with no contact, working with the FBI to take down your own ex just so you can steal your son who you haven't even tried to have a relationship with, oh and the cherry on top of claiming that she loved Cain the entire time!!!!!

I know we're supposed to see the FBI guy as the antagonist, but all I see is a woman (admittedly a criminal) trying to raise her son to be as good of a man as she knows how to and being tricked and torn down by her toxic ex-wife who doesn't deserve the time of day from her.

This could all be an amazing setup for a great book but it seems clear to me that the author doesn't see the toxicity involved in this situation and has every side character spouting lines that are pushing Cain back to Emma. I think it would have been a much more mature angle for Cain to have to deal with her messy feelings as she finally fully separates from Emma despite the toxic manipulation while dealing with a growing romance with the young FBI agent. That story would give a lot of interesting opportunities like dealing with the fact that Emma's dad is a good guy, Merrick coming to understand why she's wrong for Cain, building a relationship with her daughter etc.

Narration deserves improvement

The narrator is inconsistent with pausing and you can’t tell where a character is speaking and story narration.

A different narrator needed

I read this book at least three times and the series is definitely one of my favorite. I am having a hard time listening to this audio. With such strong characters, a different narrator would have made the audio a much better listen. Cain should have had a stronger voice, not masculine, but stronger and maybe a little deeper, more bold. I will probably finish the book (maybe, maybe not) and end up getting the entire series since it is my favorite, but a different narrator would have made a world of a difference. We all have our favorite narrators and always hope our favorite books are narrated by them because they know how to bring the book to life.

Love the Devil Series

Love the book, story and characters. The narrator was ok but I was disappointed in the whiny voice she gave Shelby and the (too) girly voice she gave Muriel. When I read the book, I had Muriel sounding similar to Cain. It’s still worth the listen.

A good story spoiled by the wrong voice

I found the flashbacks annoying just like cains egomania but what made it virtually impossible to enjoy was the narrators voice. No attempt at a soft southern accent, no differentiation between characters. I am gutted that the performer ruined it for me. I'll read the books in future

Love the Devil Series

I read this book a number of years ago and the story always stayed with me. So this time I decided to try listening to it.

I agree with a previous review - the narrator has the wrong voice for the genre. I found her voice to be too shrill and tight - more New Yorker when it should have been a low Southern drawl.

This is a favourite of mine

I listened to listened to this when I first purchased it, enjoyed it so much I listened again, because I really loved the story and the characters. However I don't like the narrators harsh voice and weird impressions, so would prefer it to be narrated by someone else, though this is something I think should be available on Audible, other AudioBook sites offer the same book but are read by a several people so that you can choose a favourite, something I like to do, but with Audible, it seems to be just the one option at the moment, so if you are unhappy with the narration, only a really good book can survive. THIS is a realy GOOD book! And am about to listen again because the second book has just been released, so I need to refresh my memory, end this and move on to the first sequel. Ali Vali has said she intends to write a series in this story, the first books ending has quite the cliffhanger, leaving soo many loose ends and different journeys these characters have open to travel, left completely open to hopes and speculation, it has been a while since this book was fitst available, it's really nice to have your Trilogies or series lined up. Like Philip Pullmans Dark Materials Trilogy, halfway through the first I ordered the next two. As with Chronicles of Ancient Darkness ~a 6 book series. I hope this series reaches many sequels. And despite not being the greatest narrator, you'll soon be absorbed in this story, if you ever liked the GodFather, this is the next best thing...imagine Katherine Moenneg as Derby.....

Femmes beware

I think this meant to be a femme/butch romance, but I found it to be some sort of a unbelievably heroic masc saviour stereotype vs a pitiful innocent woman without any personality or ambition. Not sure which the reader was meant to identify with- both are awful. Chemistry so bad I didn’t even want them to get back together. Also wouldn’t listen to anything else by this narrator. She didn’t take any breaths between sentences and didn’t do the characters well.
