Publisher's Summary

In 1540, newly married and pregnant Isobel Devlin vanished from a tiny island in Lancashire, never to be seen again.

In 2020, leaving London for the first time since the pandemic began, Nicole Rayburn and Kyle Walsh head to a guesthouse in the Lake District for a much-needed holiday. Across from the historic manor house, on an island in the middle of a lake, are the ruins of Montrose Abbey, the last known abode of Lady Isobel Devlin. Intrigued, Nicole begins to research Lady Isobel’s disappearance as the subject for a new book and calls on her history-loving friend Reverend Hargreaves for help.

As Nicole unearths long-forgotten truths about the mysterious Lady Devlin, finding many gaping holes in the story of her disappearance, she must fight for her own happiness against a rival whose claim to Kyle’s heart might be stronger than she expected.

Excellent!

I am a fan of Irina Shapiro’s books and this one did not disappoint! My favorite series is Wonderland but Echoes is a very close second. This one is similar to Echoes with the dual time period and stories. I can’t wait to see what Nicole and Kyle run into next! Brilliant!

Fantastic dual pst and present storyline

I so love the continuation of Nicole and Kyle’s story. Beautiful written with Isabel in the 1500’s and Nicole in a present day covid pandemic. I loved seeing how Henry V111's decisions affected the people of England. Amazing narration combined with the beautiful writing of come to expect from Irina Shapiro is a true winning combination

A decent sophomore effort

The first book in this series, The Hanging Tree, was fantastic. I was so excited that it was turned into a series. Nicole and Kyle are very likable and their storyline is well written and believable. I enjoyed Isobel’s side of the story, it being a big departure from the first book. However, I found myself bored at times and there’s a small storyline involving drugs that is simply not needed. I’ve been reading Irina Shapiro for over a decade and while this is one of the more memorable books, it just didn’t live up to the first. I will be trying the third one tho!

Well Done...Again!

I've read several books by Irina Shapiro and she does not disappoint! Her characters are rich, her historical detail highly researched, and her prose lovely! The mysteries are engaging and deeply satisfying, making you want to explore old ruins, find old documents, and uncover the shocking stories lurking behind those dried up census records saved to your Ancestry.com family tree.
The heroines, from vastly different times, are both relatable and authentic, their stories intimately told.

The Devil’s Den

I read the first in the series and I was hooked. This second book is even better. Not only was there a mystery in the past with the disappearance of Isabelle but also mystery and challenges in the present with Kyle and Nicole. Can’t wait to read the third in series.

Loved Everything but the referencing to Covid Pandemic

I absolutely loved, LOVED the 1st book in this series, The Hanging Tree! It was exactly the kind of book I was looking forever for. I actually read the reviews of this book The Devils Den and was going to read it, but wanted to start with the first, hence why I read The Hanging Tree!

The Devils Den has the same concept as the Hanging Tree. Current times Nicole is a historical fiction writer who likes to write about the truth even though it’s fiction. Then it always tells a story in historical times, which I absolutely love. The going back and forth from 1540 to current times is brilliant in the writing of this book. It never gets confusing, and it’s incredible how author Irina Shapiro puts everything into place just at the right time. We are figuring out the mystery right along with the character writer Nicole.

The Narrator is incredible! I have enjoyed listening to her.

If you are scrolling through audible for hours on end, reading reviews looking for the right read/listen, this is a great series so far. Start with The Hanging Tree before this one, and then this one. It makes more sense if you read the 1st one before this one. But, this can be read as a stand alone too.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars, and the ONLY situation I did not like in this book is the referencing to Covid in the current times of this story. I get it was written during the pandemic, but I am so done with all the restrictions, and when I read or listen to a book, I don’t want to be living in the pandemic all over again. I want to escape that hell!
It’s not referenced so much that I didn’t enjoy the book though, and don’t let that change your mind about reading it. The story is amazing and I Loved it all besides the Covid, masks, others not wearing masks, lockdown, staying in because of Covid referencing.

Great Story! If you love Historical Fiction, suspense, and modern day, this is the series! Remember start with The Hanging Tree, then The Devil’s Den!

Irina Shapiro nails it again!

Ok, admittedly this is a guilty type of historical fiction, romantic but not quite smutty and full of happy endings. Still, it is rich in history and full of modern accuracy to our current lives! Loved it!

Very enjoyed!

I thought the story and the mystery in the past was very entertaining. However, I was very disappointed that the author saw fit to include covid in her story. People read books and watch movies to escape, bringing covid into the story literally turned my stomach.
