Story
In the future, mankind has learned to manipulate their DNA, harnessing only the good genes, like intelligence, strength, and height. They called this prime DNA and humans rushed to get these new pDNA injections, which gave them superhuman-like qualities. Centuries later, however, their DNA became so engineered that humans rarely lived past the age of 30, thanks to a new deadly disease called the Kiss. The only cure is to receive an injection of oDNA, DNA from an Original human that hasn't been genetically altered. Problem is there aren't many Originals left.

I killed a girl last night. I did it with my bare hands and an old piece of pipe I found lying next to the dumpster. But that's not the part that got me. The part that scared me, the part I can't seem to wrap my head around and still has me reeling, was that when she charged me, her body shifted; and then she was a wolf - all snapping teeth and extended claws. But by the time I stood over her lifeless body, she was a girl again. That's about the time I went into shock. And that was the moment he showed up.

Mixed emotions
The story sucked me right in. I liked learning about Eve's struggle with using magic. But there were some parts of the book that felt slow and monotonous, due to the slow narration. I can see how the narrator's voice was used to give the story a darker feel, but it was too slow, monotone, and unfeeling. I think I would have enjoyed reading the book, instead of listening to it.

Audio book does not match the book
This audiobook changes some of the wording from the written version and in some cases leaves entire paragraphs out. Someone needs to review and re edit this version. I'm reluctant to use it because I feel like I'm being cheated out of the authors actual words. That really sucks because it seems like a great book that I wanted to listen to( continue reading) during my commute to work.

Original, interesting story - AWFUL narration.
What did you like best about The Devil's Fool? What did you like least?
This book is full of familiar types of supernatural beings but the story itself is fairly original. I've read so many books of this genre that I can usually pin down the plot by the end of the first couple chapters but this one had me wondering about some things. The worst part of this book was the narration. It's seriously bad... Veronica Fox - when speaking as Eve - is completely monotone most of the time. I think it's her attempt to sound hopeless and weary but someone with more experience would realize there's a huge difference. When she was speaking as Boraz the vampire she tried to make him sound smooth and bad-boyish but he just sounds like a somewhat monotone used car salesman. Her best narration was Eve's wine-loving, drunk aunt but that was all of about 5 minutes total speaking time.
What did you like best about this story?
Some parts of the story kept me wondering. Most supernatural romance books follow a pretty well worn path so it was nice that this one had some elements that I wasn't able to immediately figure out.
How could the performance have been better?
I think that if she were to take some acting classes (because really, that's what this is - voice acting) she'd improve remarkably. It was just way too monotone through the entire book.
Do you think The Devil's Fool needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
It has follow up books....

Witches Vampires and Humans who would have thought
Eve, Charlie, Boaz, Lucien. Where do you start? Eve is a witch raised by wicked witch parents. she refuses to use her powers because she sees how her parents ae using theirs. Along comes Boaz with his own agenda who gets her to become almost as bad as her parents. What do Lucien and Charlie do? How does Boaz react to their inteference? This is not the brightest of books. Lots of dark charcters and events. The narration could have been better and the story is more for a young adult rather than for seasoned readers. It did keep my interest yet I don't think I will come back for books 2 and 3. That is up in the air. I would recommend for young adults who ar getting into the paranormal reading realm.
I got this book from Audioblast for an honest review. No money was exchanged.

I just purchased the second book in the Series!
This Book was such a great story. This story has just the right balance of humans, witches and vampires. I have just purchased the Kindle versions of The Devil's Angel (book 2) and The Devil's Soldier (book 3). I am so happy that there are 2 more books after this one. I enjoyed the characters, the plot, the sub-plots and the last line in the book. Wow!
Eve has been raised by 2 Witch parents that enjoy inflicting torture and play mental games with their daughter. They are trying to get Eve to use her powers. She won't because she NEVER wants to be like her father and mother (who could blame her - they were abusive and evil). She comes from a totally awful secluded life into a bright new world enabled by her vampire friend Boaz.
Eve is a powerful witch that has tried to hide her talents from her parents. Boaz helps bring out her gifts. With the help of her friends, Eve becomes a very dark and dangerous killer. While on a killing spree, she meets a vampire named Lucien. Her dark evil heart is confused by the light she once felt when she touches his hand. Lucien is a dark violent vampire with a mission. His gift is reading people. Eve is given a vision that shows she still has some bright spark in her soul.
There is a major development at this point in the book. I am not going to make this a spoiler, but Eve meets a man named Charlie that is a member of a secret society that keeps a balance between good and evil. This changes her life. I highly recommend this book to any paranormal fantasy fan. There is a tiny bit of romance in this book that does not distract from the action.
The narrator is good and I love her Charlie voice. Nice Sexy english accent. I forgot it was a woman narrator, she is that good.

I had a difficult time putting down
Eden is her safe haven and where she travels each night in her mind to get away from her abusive parents. Her parents are the movers and shakers in the political world and society. But each night they insist she use her magic. Each night she refuses until she has no choice but to fight for her life and the life of the vampire she is physically attracted to; she uses her magic – 18 years of suffering, pain and hate comes to simmer and boil over. Evil magic feels good, until … like anything evil, it is addictive and becomes uncontrollable. Another saves her and now she must save him through the power of good and love.
Eve must rediscover herself to save her friends. The question is can she do it and is she strong enough to face an evil much stronger and more persistent than her parents?
I enjoyed how Rachel McClellan told the story of Eve’s journey of self-discovery and ultimate sacrifices. A vivid and powerful storyteller, McClellan takes common relationship issues and stretches them beyond what we know, demonstrating how choices can affect us and others. Innocents without experience can be swallowed up quickly and completely; McClellan vividly portrayed that possibility into a reality through interactions between Eve and her friends/family.
I thought this was a good book, one I had a difficult time putting down and one that I sometimes found myself saying, “OMG what are you doing?” McClellan tells an engaging story that draws the reader in and when the book ends; well, you are left seeing when part 2 is coming out!
The narrator Veronica Fox performed the parts excellently, slowing it down and energizing it with power and excitement when appropriate. She became the characters but especially Eve. I enjoyed her performance immensely.
There were no issues with the production or quality of this audiobook.

Good enough story but I couldn't handle narration
The plot was interesting enough that I tried to keep listening, but I eventually had to give up and switch to simply reading the Kindle version to find out how The Devil's Fool ended. And here's the thing, I kinda feel bad about leaving a 2-star review for performance, because Vivica Fox has talent. She did an excellent job voicing several of the voices but the narrative part (which is the bulk of the book) was just so flat that it wasn't at all enjoyable. I suspect the author asked for a darker type of delivery for the narrative... but it just wound up being incredibly slow and monotone (I even increased the listening speed to 120 hoping it would help me deal better with the monotone delivery. It did help a little but sadly, not enough). The story itself was good enough (and different enough from the typical books in its genre) that I'll read the second book in the series, and since it's from a male's POV, I may even try the Audible version of it. And, I would definitely try another audiobook from the same narrator... as I said, Fox does have voice acting talent, it's just that the style of delivery in this book was a miss for me. I would recommend listening to the sample to make sure the delivery fits your tastes before you buy.

Dead boring
Woman's voices just drones on and on and on. No expression whatsoever. Perhaps because of this I couldnt get past 4 chapters I'm unsure? But if I'm honest the story is rubbish too.
I've read far better 'inclusive/free' books and don't think I'll bother trying to continue.
Very annoyed as I've wasted my only Credit for the month on this utter rubbish and because of this it's made me overly cautious for future reads.... Now what do I read?
I've learned that even though the - sample read might sound good on this occasion I was wrong!
Very disappointed 😢 and I can't return it either 😡

if you can listen through the first chapters, the narrator gets better.
It reads a bit like a coming of age story for the heroine. At the beginning she appears weak and naive but you see her transform throughout the book.
