Publisher's Summary

The New York Times bestselling author of The Rose Code returns with an unforgettable World War II tale of a quiet librarian who becomes history’s deadliest female sniper. Based on a true story.

In the snowbound city of Kiev, wry and bookish history student Mila Pavlichenko organizes her life around her library job and her young son - but Hitler’s invasion of Russia sends her on a different path. Given a rifle and sent to join the fight, Mila must forge herself from studious girl to deadly sniper - a lethal hunter of Nazis known as Lady Death. When news of her three hundredth kill makes her a national heroine, Mila finds herself torn from the bloody battlefields of the Eastern Front and sent to America on a goodwill tour.

Still reeling from war wounds and devastated by loss, Mila finds herself isolated and lonely in the glittering world of Washington, DC - until an unexpected friendship with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and an even more unexpected connection with a silent fellow sniper offer the possibility of happiness. But when an old enemy from Mila’s past joins forces with a deadly new foe lurking in the shadows, Lady Death finds herself battling her own demons and enemy bullets in the deadliest duel of her life.

Based on a true story, The Diamond Eye is a haunting novel of heroism born of desperation, of a mother who became a soldier, of a woman who found her place in the world and changed the course of history forever.

Excellent narration!

Very interesting historical war novel that included Intrigue and romance (tastefully done). Based on a true story, I appreciated the photos in the accompanying PDF as well as the author’s concluding remarks. The narrator did a marvelous job of switching voices and accents. I gave a four-star rating for the story just because modern expressions and colloquialisms were used when the story was set in the 1940’s.

Enthralling

Fantastic. Ready to reread and study it’s structure. But I’m not just writer gushing—this fabulous book based on a true story is as enthralling as it is shocking as it is completely believable, while much more enjoyable than a non-fiction account would be. Excellent narration, as ever.

Another thrilling adventure!

Kate Quinn has done it again! Not a moment dragged in this inspiring story. Story and narration were done so well. Bought it yesterday and finished today. Devoured another one of these amazing stories that need to be told. Sad it is over.

Great Book!

I read the Ross Code and The Alice Network and the Huntress. I loved all of them and this is one to add to the collection. I loved how she tied in characters from the huntress into this book. Book characters and author shows how much women ROCK! Can’t wait for the next book!

What a fantastic book.

Based on the true story of the most famous female Russian sniper in WW 2. As always a great read. But even more so when I looked up Lady Death and found so much of this novel to be true.
READ IT! It’s great.

Great potential but lost edge

Too political great character ruined by political delivery
The character should have been the focus not political statements

Kate Quinn at her best

An exceptional story superbly told. I loved every minute of this story. Quinn again hits it out of the park detailing the feats and heroism of women in WWII. Without her, their stories would never be told. She is an excellent writer, and the wonderful narration did her justice. Loved everything about this book.
