Story
Far from the kingdom of Torvald, on the Western Isles near the coast, sea dragons rule the skies. Lila is the daughter of the Raider leader, destined to take his place one day aboard their plundering ships. Her people value only what trinkets they can get their hands on, but she aspires to much more than that: Lila wants the Raiders to become Dragon Mercenaries, dragon riders who help protect merchant fleets and navies from attack. Publisher's Summary
A kingdom divided cannot stand. For those caught in the middle, it means death.
For centuries, humans and dragons existed side-by-side in Alveria, bonded by their care of one another. But no longer. After decades with no viable eggs, humans far outnumber dragons, and the survival of the species appears bleak. The outlook for everyday humans is little better as rogue dragons raid and torment villages. Yet it’s far worse for the tamers, beaten and killed simply for serving the noble dragons.
But eking by at the bottom of Alverian society isn’t any easier for 17-year-old Kaelan Younger. Harder still when her loyalty to the dragon crown is no secret. But when her dying mother reveals a horrifying truth about her identity, Kaelan is thrust into a world for which she is ill-prepared.
Faced with a new life at the proving grounds for humans and dragons alike, Kaelan must reconcile not just her past, but embrace the future laid out before her. When her responsibilities as an Akademy tamer collide with her feelings for a powerful dragon shifter, it will take everything she has to prepare for the coming danger threatening them both. The fate of the dragons she has sworn to serve rests in her hands.
Now, Kaelan is no longer an outsider. She’s the enemy.

Excellent Teen Fantasy
This is a new author for me. I’m glad I decided to give this new series a try. The world created by the author is unique and interesting. I was hooked from beginning to conclusion. There is the right amount of adventure, romance, drama, and intrigue.
Narration was well done and brought the story to life.
The characters are well developed and the story did not take long to suck me in. I love having dual narration so I can clearly understand where both main characters are coming from.
I’m glad the author did NOT conclude in a major cliffhanger but wrapped things up a bit and hinted of what is to come. I’m really looking forward to book 2. This is a great start to a new clean dragon series that can be read by any age group.

Beginning to another great series
This is the eighth book I’ve read/listened to by this author and I would gladly listen to another. I want to listen to all her books!
I like how the people are a mix of humans and dragons (people who shift into dragon form). Despite dragons being the monarchs and upper class, their hold on their position is tenuous. For an unknown reason, their eggs are not hatching and fewer are being laid. There are signs of an uprising amongst the humans. One man is more vocal than others, but there is something strange going on. Kaelan is sent to the Akademy after learning who her father is. She is not a Noble so she is not accepted by many of the students and teachers. She does however form a bond with one of the students- a bond that may get in the way of her becoming a dragon tamer.
This is the first book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Rebekah Nemethy ) and I would listen to another. She did a wonderful job narrating the story so I could focus on being immersed in the story and not that I was being read to. Her character voices are well done.
There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing. This book is appropriate for young teens yet a great listen for adults. There is a conclusion to this book despite the lead into the next book.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily left this unbiased review.

Surprisingly good.
This is a story about a peasant girl with powers of healing and a Prince who is learning his able to transform into a Dragon.
The two meet up on their way to the academy of Dragons and trainers.
I was surprised how much I enjoyed this book. Its categorized as Childrens Audible but I'm 55 and listen to many genres. This is a fantasy book not just for children.

overall a good read.
if you are a young adult this book is great for you. the author explains every reasoning behind every emotion and decision at length. if you're an adult these run on can get kind of tedious. I found myself skipping past the parts of the book where the main characters over explain their thoughts.
besides that.. there's magic and dragons and budding romance. every so often there's even some twists and turns. this is very much a coming of age story. to go from child to a little more grown up at the end.
worth a read. I enjoyed this series but it was a little hard to get through.

Pete's Dragon meets Twilight!
After listening to all of the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik I fancied another dragon read, this was not that book, although that could partly be down to the choice of narrator! Slow and over pronounced at times I found listening to this book like Kaelan's week long up hill journey to the Akademy must have been (a struggle)!
