Publisher's Summary

Autumn Sanderson goes by Lark now. No one in her new life can know who she was. No one from her old life can know where she is now.

Drowning in debt, she’s desperate to land a job - any job. When she finds herself at an interview for a mysterious company offering an exorbitant salary, she jumps at the chance. But things aren’t quite what they seem....

She soon learns about the company’s peculiar hiring process. Locked in a luxury cabin with five strangers who go only by their code names, she begins to question exactly what it is she signed up for.

The company, riddled with secrets and led by a cryptic boss known only as Mr. X, has strange rules and even stranger challenges for their candidates. After each day’s competition, the candidates gather around the dinner table to eat, drink, and spill their darkest secrets.

When Lark sees something she shouldn’t, she begins to ask questions, but she soon gets a warning to stop. It’s obvious she’s in danger, but why? What does the company want? How much can she trust the others in the house? Trapped in the remote house with no technology allowed, she realizes she must take drastic measures to find out the truth.

Don’t Read the Books Full Description

NO SPOILERS! Lovers of mystery and psychological thrillers should not read the books full description before listening to the story. It takes away some of the mystique and the journey of this story.

This story is immersive and takes you into an environment full of promise, intrigue, fear, and distrust. The full gambit of emotions.

It’s a fun journey and I especially enjoyed imaging myself in the protagonists shoes and wondering what I would do. It left me reflecting on what kind of person am I? How would I have done given the same experience.

I thought the narrator did a great job with differentiating the voices of characters. The story is very unique and I highly recommend it!

Worst book yet

Are usually love Kiersten’s books. This one was not well thought of, very one dimensional and weak, the plat was not thought out well I’m not sure if she was going through something in her life that made her write this in a extremely lazy way but it was absolutely awful and I exchanged it within the first three chapters. Please do better Kiersten! Been very disappointed lately in your box don’t want to take you off my best seller list.

Wow!

Kept me guessing until the very end! Bravo. It’s unusual to find a unique story these days, and this is it.

Bizarre and strange. Not in a good way.

Save your credit. This book was bizarre and strange. Not in a good way. I regret the time I spent on this.

Why?

I understand the premise and the ending… but putting the two together seems disjointed.

Spoiler
It’s all really “just a bizarre interview”

So little substance...

Just nothing to see here - parts were so implausible and people behaved so unnaturally that it didn't make any sense. Even the sense of menace didn't make sense - nobody was menaced. This was the dumb kind of unbelievable instead of implausible.

Kept me entertained

Slightly predictable, though I don't think it was the author's fault...just the way my brain works. I question everything. But the story kept me entertained to the end, and I enjoy the author's writing style, so I enjoyed it.

I was so angry with how bad this book ended up!

I had high hopes for this book (which is of course why I spent a credit on it) but the way that the story concluded was SO BAD. Reflecting on the overall story given the ending it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, there are so many holes in the story which I won't share due to spoilers, but it was a totally ridiculous storyline on so many levels.

Highly Engrossing

What a “page turner” (couldn’t turn it off till the end even tho my plan was to ration it!). Really interesting, original story and the narration by Jayme Mattler excellent, prob the best I’ve heard so far. Didn’t cringe once (a great test!) with each change of male, female or accented depictions. Very realistic, like you’d imagine the voices in your head when book-reading. Off to search for more Kirsten Modglin books. If this sort of modern suspense/mystery storyline is your cup of tea, this won’t disappoint!
