Publisher's Summary
The cold, precise Duke of Montford demands things his way: neatly ordered, in place, and adhering closely to the rules. So he is furious when he learns that the tenant of his ducal estate has been dead for a year, and a stranger has been running the Honeywell business - which, by contract, is now Montford's. When he arrives in Yorkshire to investigate, he discovers that the estate is being run by an unruly, tomboyish woman - and a bluestocking at that!
Fiery redhead Astrid Honeywell is independent and educated. She's been handling the Honeywell family business for years. And she's not about to relinquish it to anyone - not even Montford - because of some archaic contract.
Montford and Astrid have an instant hatred for one another...and an undeniable, unspeakable attraction. They must resist this improper desire - after all, Montford has a fiancée in London. But when Astrid's life is placed in terrible danger, Montford finds he may be willing to risk everything to save her.

Quirky Regency Romp
I needed a book long enough to listen to while recovering from bronchitis and I I found this one on sale for $5.24 and thought I'd take a chance. Wow, I hit the jackpot with this book because it is a delightful romp. From beginning to the end this fun story kept me entertained with characters that are enchanting, quirky, and silly. It literally helped me feel better!

An awesome little diamond in the rough!
Would you listen to The Duke's Holiday again? Why?
Yes, I would! I got this when it was on sale thanks to a reviewer I follow. I'm glad I did! I found it was an adorable light read. Not realistic in the slightest. So if your looking for a realistic accurate fictional Victorian romance you may want to go elsewhere. But if you want a cute, funny, light read then you'll enjoy this.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I adored Montford (jeez do I hate that name & I actually like his real ones, go figure). Perhaps its because I'm a slight perfectionist and could relate, but I found the fact that Montford had OCD genius! Even if he was a little too egotistical at times, I think he is one of my favorite Heroes thanks to his quirkiness. At the very least he was memorable. And that may just be me relating to the H on some weird level, but I think his feeling like he was slowly going mad quite entertaining. I'm pretty sure that makes me a little crazy O.o'
Oh, well! Crazy seems good to me, if it let's me enjoy this sweet story!
Which scene was your favorite?
That drunken race around town was hilarious. But the best part was the "reward" at the end of the race. Let's just say it doesn't turn out the way you think it will....
Any additional comments?
I'm not sure why but I see this story playing in my head like some type of hybrid Victorian Manga/ Anime (that's like a comic/ cartoon but it can be a little more mature and refined). It would actually make a really good manga/ anime, now that I think about it, all-be-it an English style one IMHO. Please don't bash me if you actually know what I'm talking about, and don't agree. I already told you I was crazy!
OK, all that aside this was a really great sale buy! But even the regular member price is pretty good. So go ahead and give this one a whirl, if you are in the mood for a quirky light romantic comedy. It.was a pretty good first book for the author!

"Diamond in the Rough" is a good description!
Maggie Fenton has written a fun, and funny, comedy of manners, with the goofiest family ever. Unfortunately, it's so good, it deserves a much better narrator to fully capitalize on the comedy. I spent way too much time being aware of who was reading, instead of just enjoying the story. (Yet another example of a good book that might have been great -- in the hands of the right narrator. Susan Duerden comes to mind.)
Sue Pitkin isn't bad here, but she uses a raspy, gutteral, and forced delivery during the entire narrative, and I was always aware of it. It isn't fluid, flowing or feminine, and the dynamics of the herioine can be fatiguing. In her defense, I did get used to it, or rather, I tried to just ignore it.
One thing that bugged me, a lot: Her infections do not always match the nuance of the text, and she makes the heroine sound like a harpy, when a softer delivery would have shown how the characters emotions were reluctantly evolving. (This is a subtle misstep and not everyone will be bothered by it as much as I was.)
But the book IS good! (And with whispersync, the price is also good.) The characters are so creative (especially the elderly aunt!), and the set up so endearing, that I find myself even now looking forward to listening to it again. And I've bought the 2nd book!
You just have to be prepared for the narration.
I was very entertained, but couldn't help but wonder what it would have been like in the hands of a really good narrator. Since this is my second listen to this book, it can't have bothered me, too much. And, it's in my re-read pile!
Recommended, but listen to the sample first.

What a delight!
What a delight! This would have been perfect except for the slowness at the beginning. For some reason, I had a hard time getting into this book but I'm so glad I stuck with it.
The story of the 4-year old Montford is heartbreaking but it explains why he has a few phobias. Astrid is a treasure! Smart, independent, and a fiery redhead. Sparks fly constantly between the two of them and that makes for a riotous good time.
I laughed a lot listening to this book. The author wrote great dialogue and Petunia the Pig is priceless. I enjoyed the narration a great deal. Both the author and the narrator are new to me and I look forward to more from each of them.
A great book!

very disappointing
What would have made The Duke's Holiday better?
story dragged, narrator's voice was not something I wanted to listen to for hours
What didn’t you like about Sue Pitkin’s performance?
aside from British accent, her voice was very unpolished
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
not that I could tell, but I only made it halfway through the 2nd chapter before giving up on it.
Any additional comments?
The first chapter was largely about the main male character, and nothing about him was appealing, nor made me want to get to know more about him, or the story that didn't seem to want to get started.

Quite ridiculous! But...
Although the behaviour of many of the characters is quite preposterous for the times and the language.. is at times very modern!!!! Nevertheless I did quite enjoy this, however, because it didn't have that historical accuracy I'm not sure I'll be bothered to look into the rest of the series, I prefer proper history with a story within it, rather than this which is a story set in a period, almost cynically appalling to those that just want the raunchy bits, whereas for me, the history is a priority and the romance is the bonus. I think, just not an author for me.

Fun story, somewhat horrible narration.
The story was fun, a proper, or not so proper, Regency romp. The narrators voice was nice and pleasant to listen to, but her character voices were just horrible. So horrible that they were almost laughable. But the story is worth listening too, if you can tolerate her horrible accentss.

Don't go there
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
I am not sure I would recommend to anyone I'm afraid
What could Maggie Fenton have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Sometimes, one sentence will do! Get to the point!
What three words best describe Sue Pitkin’s performance?
Clear, light and bright
You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
It actually sent me to sleep!
Any additional comments?
I have read many many period romances and this is by far the worst. The storyline was weak and far too verbose. So much so that you forget what point the author is trying to make. Very poor

Slightly Annoying!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Probably not in all truthfulness - as main characters started to become very annoying!
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
About time!!! And definitely a second book with Sebastian I feel.
What about Sue Pitkin’s performance did you like?
I think she was very expressive and a good narrator
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Not really had to keep pushing myself to finish it

A little bewildering
This is one book that at times confused me. There were times when I thought it was a modern day era then it would swing the other way. I can't say I really liked the characters very much, Monford was weak and Astrid was an out and out bitch. The best character was the pig. There were areas that needed filling out and others that where over full. There was a story line but it just didn't ring true through out. I am not sure I will purchase another.
