London, 1819. Richard, Marquess of Devon, is satisfied with his ton marriage. His wife of five months, Lady Eugenia Devon, thought she was, too, until she found the book. Their marriage is one of respect and affection, with no messy entanglements such as love. Devon's upbringing impressed upon him that gentlemen slake their baser needs on a mistress, not their gently bred wives. However, once married, he was no longer comfortable bedding a woman other than Eugenia.

Shunned by a society that puts attractiveness above all else, Lady Eliza Darby’s wallflower status keeps her from getting the one thing she wants most, namely, to be a mother. Jasper Sutton—London’s most dedicated scoundrel—needs a wife, and he needs one quickly. He needs one yesterday, in fact. His requirements are precise: she must be capable of mothering the wild twin daughters who have unexpectedly appeared in his life, and so must possess the patience of a saint and the understanding of an angel. Better still if she is plain and has no expectation of a true marriage. He is not about to reform his ways.

This was terrible to listen to. The story was ok but the narration caused me to stop listening several times. The actor did a strange wobbly sound when she portrayed any of the servants. After several starts I finally finished the story.

It had me at "Elusive"
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The book had its moments. For example, the dialogue between characters were believable and both demonstrated the right maturity level. I can believe that characters at their age and within the regency period can think that way. The story was not angst-ridden so my reactions weren't extreme but the story was engaging enough to be good. For example, I disliked Jason's "rakish ways" and Olivia was too accepting of her plight in the beginning - but both their characters developed at a good pace that redeemed both characters towards the end. I also liked that the original conflict was resolved earlier and not too late in the book that it felt like an abrupt ending.
Yes I bought this book because of the title. I also thought that it was worth my time to write a review. This is my first book by Callie Hutton - although I won't be rushing to get her next book (like Lisa Kleypas, Eloisa James and Sarah MacLean), Callie will be an author that I won't mind reading again. As to Billie Fulford-Brown, she's not one of my favorites but I liked her narration of the book. There were some instances when her female and male voice seemed the same that I had to rewind a bit because I thought Olivia was supposed to be talking. Anyway, there weren't too many of those so it was forgivable. Net/net good book for a "new to me" narrator and author.

Annoying narrator
This was one of the most annoying narrators I've listened to. She did a fine job differentiating the characters, and her voice quality was pleasant. What completely threw me off were her modulation and the cadence. She read with a random rising and falling inflection that didn't accurately convey the mood/tone of the text. I know one of the reviews praised her narration; I just don't understand it! As for the story-it was nothing more than ok.

Well written regency tale. I found it to be very amusing!
The narrator was not to my liking. While she did manage to use a different voice for each character, her rising and falling inflections seemed very off. Fortunately, the author's story had me hooked.

Stupid and Frustrating
There are two stories, just as you think you have come to an end; a random plot starts.
I can't say I like any of the characters. The heroine allows herself to be treated as "Non Person", while she sits around making plans, saying things that she will never do. I hate him, I never wish to see him again, I will not go out with him and so on. The hero prances about being drunk, obnoxious, rude and a bully. who belives all he has to do is "TURN ON HIS CHARM", for women to fall down and kiss his feet. As for the author, she either does know what a "Rake" is meant to behave like or can't make up her mind. The heroine's so called best friend drops her in it, despite knowing her problems. Maybe knowing how "wishy washy" she is, it is not worth the bother giving support. The narrator obviously doesn't like lawyers as she makes them sound slimy.

Basic and lacklustre
I'll start with the narration... bad.
Billie Fulford-Brown narrates this book with a style best suited to a kindergarten picture book. An excruciating overemphasis on words that don't require emphasis, and simply awful representation of the supporting characters who are all made to sound like whimpering half-wits.
The story itself feels half-hearted and a bit slapped together. Jason is not a likeable person - the kind of guy who punches his best friend in the nose for laughing at him, and who gets his "elusive" wife drunk so he can bed her.
The whole thing feels basic and I'm really glad it was free because I'd feel ripped off if I'd paid for it.

Reasonable Story. Blah Narrator
The story had a decent flow & a fairly interesting & amusing plot. The narrator however left a lot to be desired. Her portrayal of characters left them sounding whiny, oily or gasping. In addition she proves there is such a thing as too much exclamation when it comes to her reading.

Gross
Bit too much "resistance" from the female lead in the whole story to feel comfortable. The "love interest" (I use this term VERY loosely) gets her drunk to consummate the marriage. Just has an overall ick feel for me. Nothing likeable about the LI in the least, he's just an a-hole with the temperament of a 15yo who doesn't get his way.

Average story & narration
The story was okay overall but felt a bit rushed. I would have liked to have gotten to know the male lead better. There wasn't much depth to him.
The introduction of a new plot out of the blue right at the end was strange and totally unnecessary.
The narrator did well enough distinguishing between the various characters (male and female) but her portrayal of servants or tenants was really annoying. She had them either speaking very slowly or sounding really whiney.
