Publisher's Summary

"The act of praying is not just an empty wish, because behind each prayer there is a practice of mindfulness and concentration." (Thich Nhat Hanh, from The Energy of Prayer)

In this extraordinary celebration of spirituality, The Energy of Prayer demonstrates the relevance of prayer in our daily lives. Thich Nhat Hanh reveals how the energy of prayer and meditation allow us to reconnect with our higher selves while satisfying our basic need to connect with the world as a whole. With a generous spirit that acknowledges the many different types and functions of prayer, The Energy of Prayer provides a guide for deepening our spiritual practice through the use of prayer.

Thich Nhat Hanh introduces the listener to several meditation methods that reenvision prayer as an open, inclusive, and accessible practice that helps create healthy lives through the power of awareness and intention. Unlike any other

Forget anything you have read on prayer. Unlike other books on the subject this looks at why and what prayer is. This also includes a unique step to charge your prayer practice. It really shows unities of every path. It might be short, but it is one of those rare pearls which you might move onto your device permanently. This is freeing because unlike other books on the topic it is not about converting it is a tool.

Great narration elevates this

I liked Thich Nhat Hanh’s premise: After meeting with some Catholic nuns, two Buddhist nuns told him that it seemed like Christianity was easier than Buddhism because you just pray and put your faith in God whereas with Buddhism, you have to do everything yourself. So he wanted to examine prayer in a way that would help both Buddhists and those from prayer-using faiths. It was intellectually interesting to read how he reconciled prayer with Buddhism’s central tenet of seeking proof that an idea works. He concludes that prayer is merely the initial step with which to inspire action in the real world. If you’ve read much Thich Nhat Hanh, you can probably skip this one unless you’re a practicing Christian. There are good appendices with Buddhist practices that can be used like prayers — they’re available in other books, though. Also, beware of the fallacious introduction by Larry Dossey that erroneously claims scientific studies have proven that prayer can heal. No double-blind prayer study has ever done so. Grade: B+

Ballerini is the absolute best narrator of Thich Nhat Hanh books. I’ve listened to him read other Buddhist titles and he's good, but he simply inhabits Thich Nhat Hanh's spirit in a way that's compelling all by itself. He's like Ralph Cosham's readings of Louise Penny.

Prayer and Repeat

He’s always so great but it’s a repeat of his other books and lectures. However, I always learn something new.

A true blessing

This is one of the better teachings on prayer that I've come across. A person of any spiritual persuasion could learn a great deal from this clear, masterful recording, as TNH really gets what prayer is and how (and why) it actually works. Prayer has sadly fallen out of fashion in our self-determined "new age" spiritual culture; I hope this beautiful book will help turn the tide, as the world today needs all the prayers we can manage. (I would also recommend Caroline Myss's "The Power of Prayer". It comes at the subject from an entirely different angle, but is also quite illuminating.)

The Energy of Prayer

This book is amazing. I plan to listen to it again and again and buy a copy for my library. The reading by narrator in itself draws you in and gives you a sense of peace. I will encourage family to listen or read this book.
