Publisher's Summary

Foolish women fall in love with the bad boy.

Cane Alexander was bad boy personified.

Confident, he entered a room with his piercing blue eyes wearing a smug grin. He was the proverbial red flag wrapped up in a ridiculous set of abs.

I tried to resist him. After all, I was done being a fool.

Maybe it was his charm, or perhaps it was his persistence. Maybe it was how he entered my life and refused to leave. Whatever the reason, I fell for the one man I should’ve resisted.

Even though it made me a target.

I didn’t know if I’d become yet another notch on his bedpost or be the exception to his rules.

Or if I’d survive long enough to be either.

From USA Today best-selling author Adriana Locke comes a tale full of twists and turns. Listners who enjoy opposites attract, romantic suspense, and cocky heroes will enjoy this story.

Note: The Exception now includes an extended epilogue previously titled "The Connection".

This one will have you glued to your headphones!

Jada is starting over, living with her sister and working for her dad after her divorce. She’s determined to make better choices this time. But when Cane Alexander, perpetual playboy with a strict rule for no commitments sets his sights on her it’s only a matter of time before she finds herself falling for the wrong type of guy again. With him not ready to commit and her not willing to get her heart broken again how can these two find a middle ground?

Meanwhile there’s a man from Cane’s past whose come back for revenge and once he sees Cane’s obvious interest in Jada, he knows just how to do it.

I listened to the audiobook and I was hooked. The narrators were perfection for their characters and the story with the push and pull and the element of suspense had me glued to my headphones until I finished this one.

I would like to clarify something I’ve seen in other reviews that I feel is misleading. I’ve seen people upset that Cane “cheated” on Jada. Jada and Cane hooked up and Cane made it very clear that he doesn’t do commitments or relationships prior to their hook up. He does go on to hook up with someone else after that. Did I enjoy that part? Not particularly if I’m being honest but Cane grows so much in this book and to write him off for a misstep so early in the book is a mistake. Once Cane makes a commitment he doesn’t waver in his loyalty.

What I loved most about this book was Jada. She was such a smart cookie and she was so strong despite her awful past and everything she had to put up with. She’s definitely the kind of heroine I adore and I was rooting for her more than anything else.

If you love a reformed alpha playboy, a strong heroine, and romantic suspense then I think you will love this one! Thanks so much to Adriana for providing me with an audiobook for review!

I like bad boys and I cannot lie

Oooh! Cane is a total book boyfriend material and I swooned over him. Loved the chemistry and all the drama. I nurse a love for alpha men and Adriana seems to have crafted him with keeping my kinks in mind. lol! The audio narration was engaging and the dual cast made the audiobook more fun, enjoyable and totally worth it.

Persistent Alphmale and Divorced Heroine = 🔥🥵

One thing I love is being on the team to support Adriana. I adore her books and especially her audios. There are certain authors who really put in time and effort in picking narrators for their books. Know, we appreciate it.

The Exception was seriously the book I was in the mood for. Angst. Silly Woman falls in love with the bad boy. I also love that the heroine was divorced and wanted no relationship at all. Gold. Why do I love it when gals are divorced. I feel like it makes them so much stronger.

Cane Alexander is a bad boy for sure. He is smug and has some really deep stuff eating his lunch. He is a jerk and so cocky, but it just made me love him more. Jada is in town to heal. She is excited to be back at work with her dad. Their first interaction is the best. And when Jada dismisses him… it just makes him hungrier.

Notes: The hero does have a one night stand with someone else after being with the heroine.

4.25 Stars!

Having picked up many of Ms.Locke's books over the years I always get so happy whenever I get to jump into another one! I've been meaning to pick this one up for a while and when I found out about the audiobook, I knew it'd be the perfect chance to do so. I really enjoyed this listen!

Having listened to Connor Crais and Samantha Brentmoor before, I was so thrilled when I found out these two were narrating The Exception! How how Connor and Samantha hooked me with their narration! I love the way these two brought Jada and Cane to life and had me feeling so much from start to finish with this listen! Connor and Samantha were so fantastic with their narration and kept me glued to my earbuds. I can't wait to listen to more from them in the future!

Jada and Cane's journey pulled me in! As Jada is trying to move forward, can she take a chance on Cane? Or will the risk to her heart be too much? I couldn't wait to find out!

Going into this story, I didn't know what all to expect which I throughly enjoyed! Both Jada and Cane had me going through many emotions throughout. I felt for Jada. The chemistry between her and Cane was great! I really liked the fact that these two and their story had realness.

With The Exception, Ms.Locke has created such a good story that had me feeling so dang much! I love how her writing captures my attention so completely and gets into my heart every single time. I can't wait to dive back into this world with book two, The Perception! 💗

Exciting romance!

So I love Adriana Locke! She is one of my favorite romance writers so when I was asked to review this audiobook of one of hers that I had yet to read, I was so excited!

I love an Alpha hero, I don’t know what it is about them but I just like to see them soften because of their LI. Cane was exactly like this, and Jada was so good for him.

I really loved reading their story but I liked the action that came along with this book as well. I am finding that I love a romance that also has thriller/mystery components to it. This was exciting and fun and I really enjoyed it.

Loved this book!

I’ve truly never read an Adriana Locke book I didn’t like and The Exception is no exception! Jada and Cane are the perfect match, as much as they both resist the pull between them. But Cane is ready to anything and everything for Jada, even when she’s hesitant to be with him. Loved the narration on this one too!

Bad Boy Love

Cane Alexander is the Bad Boy Alpha that you need in your life. He is arrogant, cocky, and so very sure of himself... So when he gets turned down by Jada, it makes the journey even more rewarding.

These two have storeis of their own and it keeps them from wanting more at the moment, but their paths keep crossing and they can't avoid the eventual attraction.

The narrators brought the story to life. While I enjoyed listening to the first version on the narration, Connor & Samantha drew me in even more and made me fall in love all over again.

This story will pull on your heart strings!

The Exception has me falling over and over Jada and Cane. A had to fight off a few tears as Jada's story was an emotional one. How she had to overcome the obstacle and yet still be humble.

Cane threw me in a loop. I loved him instantly - he had me cracking up with his quirks and I loved how Jada made him fall hard! The Exception has the highs and lows. Emotions and joys. My hear was left happy after listening to this audiobook. The story line was on point and is a great start for this series!

Connor and Samantha were a perfect match to bring Jada and Cane to life. There was never a dull moment and there were many times I would smile with their personality mesh. I loved this story and can sing its praises over and over! If you love listening to audio books and love small town romance, The Exception has to be next on your list!

Enjoyed the listen from the start

Jada is done going for the bad boy. Been there done that don’t want to try again. When she meets Cane that is exactly what he is and she is determined to not give in to him. Cane and Jada have a great chemistry together and I enjoyed their journey. The narrators were great bringing the characters and their emotions to life.

Loved!

Excellent writing and story! The characters are so well developed - really feel like I got to know and understand Cane and Jada’s characters. Story pulled me in from the start - full of warmth, friendship and heat. Just so good - I need to read the next book in the series.

Narration:
I enjoyed the narration, but slow - speed up quite a bit.
Female narrator added an odd hesitancy/questioning sound to many sentences that was out of place and distracting. Overall, I loved listening to the audiobook.

Cane & Jada!

This is the reason I love Adriana Locke. This book is so good, so easy to relate to and just pure enjoyment! Meet Jada. Recently divorced from Decker, her abusive husband, she is now living with her sister Cari. She has captured the attention of the local player, Cane, a friend of Cari's boyfriend. He has no interest in a relationship, but there is something about Jada that intrigues him. Maybe it's the fact that she is not the least bit interested in a relationship. But there is a definite attraction, and she may not be able to resist the charms of this man for long. Will he be able to keep it casual? Both their pasts come to haunt them, and we get to peel away the many layers to both of these characters. Locke gives us a little suspense at times, keeping the story exciting and our hearts invested. It's fantastic and one of my favorite kind of listens!

To make it even better, Connor Crais and Samantha Brentmoor breathe life into these characters. Understanding each one, giving them the care they deserve and creating their personalities, giving us their feelings and making them real. I loved these two together and loved the performance.

Everyone love an Alphahole!

The Exception by Adriana Locke follows playboy, billionaire, alphahole Cane Alexander and Jada Stanley.
Jada is looking for a new life after finally having the strength to leave an abusive relationship. Insert Cane Alexander, Jada knows she cannot love a man like Cane as he is everything that she is not looking for. Cane, lover of all women - at least once finds an instant connection with Jada. Knowing that he’s not capable of being the man he wants but wanting to be the man she has to have, Cane pursues her anyway.
After finally breaking down her walls - Jada gives in to one night with Cane, thinking he was going to be different she realizes he is exactly what he said he would be. Just sex, nothing more.
Or does Cane find his Exception?
The Exception is a story with stubborn men, strong women and borderline gray areas ( but thats what we all love about an alphahole.)
This book also has really fun loveable side characters. I adore Keri and Max!

Samantha Brentmoor and Connor Crais are a fantastic narration pair for this story. I love how Samantha brings Jadas strength and vulnerabilities out while Connor does a great job helping us feel the back and forth that Cane is going through.

Overall I liked the story - Cant wait to read more from Adriana Locke.

Beautiful!

Adriana Locke is one of my go-to authors for feel-good, emotional romances with just the right amount of angst. And this book just solidifies that. Divorced heroine who didn’t even want a relationship falls in love with a bad boy. Alpha hero meets strong, independent woman. And for a reason unbeknownst to me I seem to have a knack for divorcee heroines. Who knew?
Fair warning, the hero does get together with another woman but it happens when there is no commitment at all between him and our heroine. Did I like it? Not at all. But it’s part of his character growth. Just trust Ms. Locke on this.

So … the audio. Samantha Brentmoor and Connor Crais are a fantastic narrator duo. I loved how they captured all the emotions and intonations just perfectly.

Swoony and sweet with a touch of suspense

The Exception is swoony and sweet, with a little bit of danger and suspense.
Jada is starting over after getting out of a toxic relationship and not looking to jump back into anything. She knows she needs to swear off of those “bad boys” she seems to be attracted to, but as soon as she meets Cane Alexander she is fighting a losing battle against the immediate attraction.

“You’re the one exception to every rule I’ve ever made.”

Cane has a rule to keep his relationships uncomplicated but meeting Jada proves that some rules were made to be broken.

“You’re my world. My happiness. My exception.”

I loved listening to The Exception on audiobook. The narration was wonderful and just made the reading experience even better.

Didn’t live up to its potential

As usual Connor Crais and Samantha Brentmoor have provided listeners with fantastic performances. They have both done a great job giving voices to the characters of the Exception and made my daily commute to work a listening pleasure.

Now the book itself. On paper I should’ve loved The Exception but for some reason it just didn’t grab me the way I thought it would. The storyline was good with plenty of twists to keep me interested but I just found the hero and heroine a bit meh and they didn’t make much of an impression on me. I just didn’t care what happened to them. I’ve read other books by Adriana Locke which I have loved especially the Mason Family series but The Exception just didn’t live up to its potential.
