Story
Three years ago, Bear McKenna’s mother took off for parts unknown with her new boyfriend, leaving Bear to raise his six-year-old brother Tyson, aka the Kid. Somehow they’ve muddled through, but since he’s totally devoted to the Kid, Bear isn’t actually doing much living. With a few exceptions, he’s retreated from the world, and he’s mostly okay with that - until Otter comes home. Otter is Bear’s best friend’s older brother, and as they’ve done for their whole lives, Bear and Otter crash and collide in ways neither expect.

Do you believe in love at first sight? Paul Auster doesn't. Paul doesn't believe in much at all. He's thirty, slightly overweight, and his best features are his acerbic wit and the color commentary he provides as life passes him by. His closest friends are a two-legged dog named Wheels and a quasibipolar drag queen named Helena Handbasket. He works a dead-end job in a soul-sucking cubicle, and if his grandmother's homophobic parrot insults him one more time, Paul is going to wring its stupid neck.

My whole life, I’ve been taught to despise shifters. So when I’m hired to track two escaped convicts, I’m suddenly thrust into the world I hate - or thought I did. Yet I’m inexplicably drawn to the alpha of the pack, whose land the convicts may be hiding on. He’s different than any shifter I've ever met - laidback and quick to laugh, caring, and protective. As secrets are revealed, I start to wonder if everything I’ve been raised to believe was a lie, though it may not matter, because it seems like someone wants us dead.

Publisher's Summary
In Nova City, there are extraordinary people, capable of feats that defy the imagination. Shadow Star protects the city and manipulates darkness, and Pyro Storm is determined to bring the city to its knees using his power over fire.
And then there's Nick, who...well, being the most popular fan-fiction writer in the Extraordinaries fandom is a superpower, right?
Instead of fighting crime, Nick contends with a new year at school, a father who doesn't trust him and a best friend named Seth, who may or may not be the love of Nick's short, uneventful life.
It should be enough. But after a chance encounter with Shadow Star, Nova City's mightiest hero (and Nick's biggest crush), Nick sets out to make himself extraordinary. And he'll do it with or without Seth's reluctant help....
Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl meets Brandon Sanderson's Steelheart in TJ Klune's YA debut: a queer coming-of-age story about a fanboy with ADHD and the heroes he loves.

Simply sublime
I want Michael Lesley to narrate my life.
After finishing the Tales or Verania series I came straight on to this. This isn't as enthralling, but as a 44 year old woman I am hardly the target audience. But like all of TJ Klune books this one is so full of heart, warmth and humour that it is adorable. I only found TJ recently and have devoured his books, rarely have I been so touched by an author. Finishing his stories is always an awful wrench; so deeply do they pull you in. House in the Cerulean Sea left me gobsmacked for days, sublime literature.
Michael Lesley's performance is just perfect. And it is a 'performance', he's not simply reading the story to you - he's the first narrator that has ever made me bawl like baby.

Pure copanganda, glorifying the oppressive police
I don't understand how tj klune could mention black lives matter at the start of the book then go on to write a story that paints the police through rose tinted glasses. The police kill people, target Poc, criminalise the poor and are the tool of the state to suppress dissent.
I can't read this author anymore when he shows such glaring gaps in their understanding of oppression.

The Extraoridinaries review by Albert Anness
A breathtaking and absolutely captivating story and I just strained for more until it was finished. Being a kid I f my era I didn't see that many LGBT characters in stories so to read one where the main character is gay is quite refreshing and cool to see and we need more these days. I do like the classic superhero tropes in this and how good guys being seen as bad guys and bad guys as good guys. I also like the plot twist across the story and how it hints everything as the story progresses. I also find the main character interesting as he is a good protagonist in the sense is is so imperfect- immature, a bit self centred and trapped in his own world which makes him rather insufferable but is still a good guy and I also find it interesting seeing an ADHD character and the struggles he faces from his personal life to trauma if the past. It also dives deep into what makes a hero and heroes don't always where capes, some where badges or are still in high school. Overall I would highly recommend this book and have no complaints.

Great fun, but missing an end chapter
Once again Michael Lesley narrates this brilliantly; the story is lively and the characters are fun, but it's heartfelt as well as making you laugh. My only minor niggle is that it misses the short chapter that's after the ackonwledgements in the ebook; it's probably the equivalent of the scene in a film that comes right at the end of the credits, it's short but pretty significant in terms of what it reveals about what might be coming in the next book (although it's not exactly a surprise revelation), and it's annoying that you wouldn't know about it if you don't also had the ebook, as I normally only have one or the other. I can't see any particular reason not to include it? It's a shame as the rest of the narration is great, and I really enjoyed the book overall and have the second one lined up to listen to - but as I don't have the ebook for that one, I'll be wondering what I might have missed come the end.

Great story, but missing epilogue
I loved this YA. It alternates between being heartbreaking and hilarious. Also, whoever thought to market it as a 'superqueero' needs a raise.
Only downside is that the audio book misses out the epilogue that appears in the hard copy, and that includes a pretty major bombshell.

T.J. Klune is up there in my top three authors, this book is so funny, laugh out loud, giggling funny, so much so I had to pause the book so I wouldn’t miss any of it whilst laughing. Not my favourite TJ Klune book
Nick has a huge crush on the extraordinary (superhero) known as Shadow Star, and is obsessed with the ongoing fight with his arch nemesis, Pyro Storm. If only Nick could become an extraordinary himself, he might just get Shadow Storm to notice him. There was a lot to like about this, but ultimately it just didn’t work for me. There was plenty of teen humour, snarky comebacks, superhero action, and a lot of depth in Nick’s character. However, the book spends all its time in Nick’s head and we barely get to know Nick’s best friend, Seth, or his ex-boyfriend, Owen. The dealbreaker for me was that Nick is portrayed as so absolutely clueless about so many things that he is ridiculously naive and gullible - he couldn’t see who had a crush on him, couldn’t spot the obvious patterns that would reveal the secret identities of the extraordinaries, and even believed lies about ghosts. I understand the controversy about police brutality given #blacklivesmatter, and maybe that aspect of Nick’s dad backstory should be rewritten. 🎧 I have a love / hate relationship with Michael Lesley. On the one hand, his breeziness enhances a lot of the humorous dialogue; on the other, it can sound like he’s rushing lines or just doesn’t care.

Great Performance by Michael Lesley
I'm really glad I went with the audio version for The Extraordinaries, Michael Lesley does such a wonderful performance with all the characters in this story, especially Nicky. I smiled every time he performed the lines...."Nicky, no." "Nicky, yes!"........This book was packed with all of the feels, and was enjoyable from start to finish.
I love Nick - he's so adorably clueless with regards to his bestie Seth. He has a major obsession with the Extraordinaries, in particular Shadow Star, and a fantastic circle of close friends. I enjoyed the way this story played out, I've learnt to expect the unexpected with this author.

Classic TJ but not the best one
I have 9 books in total from TJ Klune. One of my favourite authors.
This one was fun to listen to but I think it was it the weakest one BUT WAIT hear me out.
It's definitely one that'll touch your inner childhood nerd. Coming of age romance, the sexy bad kid you can't but fall in love with and of course TJ's camp humour. For sure, TJ knew what he was doing, however if you've read his Green Creek series or Tales From Verania you'll see where TJ's strength lies.
Michael Lesley is one of best out there, however I don't think he gave too much personality to some of the characters in this one. Still, I never tire of his voice and delivery.
Overall it was good but not great.
