A fresh take on a classic

*The Wheel of Time* has a special place in my heart, as it does for countless fans around the world. I read the (paper) books during one of the most challenging periods of my life, and I honestly think I would not be where I am today if not for the hope I got from these books.

That being said, I honestly tried to like the Kramer and Reading recordings for years. I’ve listened through all the books multiple times, trying to figure out exactly why I do not enjoy their work on these books. I know they have legions of fans but, for some reason, they never worked for me. These are highly charged, extremely emotional books, and while I think Reading puts a fair bit of emotion into her performances, Kramer does not.

Once again, this is purely my personal opinion.

Pike gave me what I had hoped to get when I first bought the WOT audios. The breathless anticipation, the riveting action sequences, the tension, the drama, the romance, the thrill. The Prologue, for instance, is an extremely tense scene. There is a tremendous amount of history behind every word that is written in that one chapter, not to mention the amount of drama — Kramer’s reading felt a little… lax. Pike’s voice, on the other hand, flowed. The dialogue is emotional, the descriptions are vivid, and she has a tremendous amount of control in how she portrays these characters. The ending of the Prologue, one of the most dramatic closing scenes in any WOT book, is builds like an orchestra with Pike’s performance, the tension climbing and climbing before coming crashing down with all the force of a tsunami.

Once more, I laud Kramer and Reading for lending their voices to an incredible series of books. Personally, I struggled to enjoy their performance, and Rosamund Pike’s voice worked like magic for me. She gives a vivid, fresh face to a classic tale, and I think she does a wonderful job.

I sincerely hope she goes on to narrate the rest of the books.

Daniel Henney should read the male voices

I really like Rosamud Pikes narration of this book as a alternative to the original. I still like the original as well. I think if they plan to redo all the other books, it would be awesome to see someone like Daniel Henney or one of the other male actors from the Amazon series to narrate the male character in the same fashion as the original version that Michael Kramer and Kate Reading did.

Wow

Just amazing. Love the original by Michael kramer and Kate Reading, but Rosamund brings a whole new level. Had me hooked from the beginning and I didnt want to "put it down" 10 out of 5 stars. Hope she does the rest of the rest of the series or other series. Amazing.

Beautiful Narration

I’m a huge fan of the original Kramer/Reading audiobook narration. I always will be. But this lovely performance by Rosamund Pike has been an utter joy to listen to. Her voice is so well suited to reading this kind of story that I found myself revisiting chapters just to hear her marvelous take on Robert Jordan’s prose.

This reading is exceptional

Michael Kramer and Kate Reading will always have a special place in my heart for their narration, but Rosamund Pike absolutely knocked it out of the park. This is a reading that elevates the story being told in every possible way, it adds a certain gravitas that is missing in the original recordings.

I really hope she does the rest of the books. I may already have all 14 of them, but I absolutely would spend 14 more credits for the rest of the series done by her.

5 stars!!!

Exceptionally performed

Even though I’ve read the entire series many times, I found Rosamund Pike’s rendition of The Eye of the World absolutely enchanting. She manages to inject uniqueness to each character without sounding contrived. I found myself completely lost in another world because of her storytelling. My only complaint is that I don’t know if she’ll be doing the rest of the series. Please please please make it happen!

Masterful narration gives new life to a classic

This new narration gives EOTW the weight and gravitas it deserves. It's like stepping into this world again for the first time. Like most people, I am a fan of the originals and am happy to have both. It's wonderful to hear a new interpretation, and it's a breathtaking performance. It's asking a lot but I really hope she does the whole series. Wow!

A laughable narration when compared to the original.

First off, I work as a professional audio editor and have worked on numerous New York Times Best Selling author’s audiobooks that are available here on Audible. I have have worked on hundreds of different narrators from professional narrators, to self read author reads and actor reads, to podcast host ect.

While Miss Pike is not a terrible narrator (I’ve certainly worked on worse actor reads) she does not even come close to even touching the Michael Kramer and Kate Redding performances. Her pacing is way off and she goes from completely monotone where she’s putting me to sleep one moment, to shrilly screeching the next moment. Her lack of vocal ability with voicing different characters made me have to turn it off after only 3 chapters.

As a long time Wheel of Time fan, I have never felt myself falling asleep or even so much as catching my mind drifting. This is largely due to both Michael Kramer and his wife Kate’s incredible narrations. They truly brought Jordan’s world of the Wheel of time to life for me. Each character has their own voice and I can tell exactly who they are at any point picking up from either reader…

For new listeners do yourself a favor and don’t waste your time with this version. Listen to the original.

An old love with new narration. A must buy.

I have loved this series my whole life and this narration has rekindled the fierce fire of passion I felt towards it. If you are reading this and wondering which one you should buy I tell you this one my friend. Rosamund Pike is such a wonder to listen to.

A lifelong passion rediscovered.

I was barely 13 when I started reading the wheel of time.. Every year a book. That long wait between publishing. I remember where I was when I heard Jordan had died, I had just started reading a Knife of dreams. And I had cried as hard as I would have loosing a friend...

With the series out, I felt the tug to return to these books though I knew I didn't have the time as I had before. Audiobooks were the answer, but I didn't like the original narration I have to confess. It didn't feel the same as reading. Then I saw this. Amlnd it was everything I hoped for and more. Rosamund Pike gave it the feel and atmosphere I wanted it to have. Even with one narrator, the characters stand out. She reads it clearly and unrushed, the acvents rich and colourful, the emotions reaching your ears through a spectacular performance. I wish with all my being that she will continue reading this series. It is a lot, I know. But wow.

I read a lot of critism about the length of Jordan's books these days from people who clearly think they could have done better. They clearly haven't because I don't see thousands of epic length series on the bookstores shelves. If you have heard of that and are hesitant, I want you to ask yourself this:

Do you love a journey without being anxious about the end? Do you love fantasy, high fantasy, epic fantasy. Fantasy from the masters. Feist. Donaldson. Goodkind. Brooks.
Are ypu ready to be pulled into a world so vast and rich that it comes with an encyclopedia?
If so. Then this is the series for you. Ignore those moaning about it's length and it's editing and how it should be shorter. What's the rush? Why would you want to rush a series as magnificent as this one.

Favourite Audiobook of All Time.

This is the first audiobook I have listened to with Rosamund Pike as the narrator and it will not be the last. She is a talented narrator. I have listened to many audiobooks with many narrators and none compare to Rosamund Pike. From the prologue, I was hooked. She truly brought this audiobook to life with her talent for narration, voices and accents. Absolutely incredible.

I would happily listen to the entire Wheel of Time series narrated by Rosamund Pike.

The Wheel Weaved Rosamund Pike Into the Tapestry

Rosamund Pike has nailed this. I loved these books and these days favour audiobooks for re-reads so was overjoyed when I saw that Rosamund Pike would be reading this as I greatly admire her work and could listen to her performances until the wheel stops turning.

The books themselves are a fantastic yarn written by a man who clearly loved the genre (and latterly seamlessly finished by Brandon Sanderson). They are not without flaws and the greatest for me are the childishness of the characters early on and the immature gender politics (which results in increasing amounts of braid tugging by Nynaeve in later books, and dress smoothing and perhaps some sighs of "boys!" but I may have made the latter up. There is also a fair amount of labouring the point just in case you didn't pick up on things like Aes Sedai being mistrusted ("witches!"). However looking beyond that the World is fantastic and the story is as exciting as it is vast. It truly is an adventure and its faults aside well-written and a classic.

I am not a young man and read little fantasy at this stage in life, but the Wheel of Time is up there with Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, A Song of Ice and Fire, and greater than Magician and The Name of the Wind all of which I think are worthy indulgences for those of mature years.

The books have the advantage that unlike the TV series they are not messing with Lore to make them more relevant and more gender neutral, for example the Dragon Reborn and False Dragons are men in the books and Women have other prominent and essential parts to play in the story. That said, the TV series is right to give a good edit to the story (and has little choice given it's size) and Rosamund Pike makes it a pleasure.

So to conclude, Rosamund Pike brings Robert Jordan's masterpiece to life and I am eager to buy the whole series (including the prequel please) if she has enough breath and motivation to continue to do the series the credit that it deserves.

Perfect version of this book

I'm writing this review in the hope that the powers that be will see this and entice Ms Pike to narrate the entire series. She is simply splendid and absolutely makes the experience. It will be a great shame is she only ever does the first book. I will not be purchasing any more of the series from Audible unless and until she is on board.

Fantastic from start to finish. Rosamund Pike brings every character to life from the smallest conversations to the loudest battle cries in the old tongue.

please do more!

I loved this. I've been waiting so long to listen to these books and find the other recordings completely intolerable. Rosamund does an incredible job, it fits the world much better and is importantly she makes the story easy to listen to so you can sit back, relax, unwind and enjoy it rather than being quite stressed between two narrators who read things differently, say things differently and pace things differently.

it feels like I'm reading the wheel of time for the first time again! Rosamund Pike brings wonderful characterisation throughout, great accents , singing and more.

It's not a comparable performance with Kate Reading and Michael Kramer, which I have listened to for hundreds of hours; they're both brilliant ❤️

A Wonderful Alternative

The Eye of the World is a great introduction to a brilliant series and this is a wonderful alternative to Michael Kramer and Kate Reading's version. While that version is loved by many, it just never worked well for me. Something about it always stops me from immersing myself in the story.

Rosamond Pike does a brilliant job in this reading! Her voice is perfect for the story and she does a great job with all the characters. Nothing feels forced, her narration is engaging and simply a joy to listen to. I really hope she will go on to do more of the books.

Brilliant, dynamic and clear vocal performance

While Eye of the world is merely and introduction to this massive story, it does a decent job at holding one’s attention and preparing the road for the compelling adventure to come.

The real appeal HERE, in the new reading, is Rosamond Pike. Wow! She is so versatile and dynamic with all her various voice choices for the characters. She even pulls of the the male characters with ease and entirely convincing. Will consider paying for and listening to , start to finish, the rest of her telling, even though I love the Michael Kramer and Kate Reading performance. Amazing Pike can carry this huge story effortlessly on her own. Really impressive. A fitting entry for new fans of the Amazon Prime series.

Amazing Narration

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. Rosamund put a great deal of effort into the individual voicing of the characters. Performance was sound and I certainly felt immersed in the story. Listened to mostly in the car.
Only negative about this performance is the disappointment one feels when previewing the next books by another narrator.
Highly recommend listening

Spellbound

I can’t thank Rosamund Pike for her absolutely extraordinary reading of this first book of The Wheel of Time. Her telling of the tales of history and her battle scenes … I was there! Absolutely captivated. I won’t be listening to any further books in the tale unless Ms Pike is narrating them. As for the story, I haven’t read any fantasy for years, it’s refreshing to find this one has so many layers and interestingly mysterious characters.

Like hearing the story anew!

This new recording of the audiobook is SO much more entertaining that the original. I really enjoyed having a single narrator, rather than a pair. Particularly for small things like consistency in pronunciations, it makes a big difference. Will be listening again!

I tried the original recordings and struggled so badly, I thought (when starting this one years later) I'd made it through 3-4 of the original books. Only to realise, it was all just book 1.

Please!!! Narrate the rest Rosamund!!
