Publisher's Summary

The third audiobook in Robert Kirkman's New York Times best-selling series, The Walking Dead: The Fall of the Governor

The Walking Dead original novel series, set in the universe of Robert Kirkman's iconic universe, continues with The Fall of the Governor. From co-authors Kirkman, creator of the Eisner Award-winning comic book and executive producer of AMC's blockbuster TV series, and Jay Bonansinga, Stoker Award-finalist and internationally acclaimed author, comes the gripping third novel in this richly woven, literary saga, which began with The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor

In Rise of the Governor, uber-villain Philip Blake journeyed from his humble beginnings directly into the dark heart of the zombie apocalypse, and became the self-proclaimed leader of a small town called Woodbury. In The Road to Woodbury, an innocent traveler named Lilly Caul wound up in the terrifying thrall of Phillip Blake's twisted, violent dictatorship within Woodbury's ever tightening barricades.

And now, in The Fall of the Governor, the Governor's complex story continues in a tour de force of action and horror. Iconic characters from the comic book, including Rick, Michonne and Glenn, finally make their entrance onto this nightmarish stage, and fans of The Walking Dead will see these characters in a whole new light.

Warning: Not the Complete Finale

If you look closely, on the cover, under the title, is a little hard to see section that says "PART ONE"

So, despite what you may read in the product description, this is not the finale, but half of the finale. I have no idea when part 2 will come out.

The story was good, and the narration solid, but overall I felt the packaging was deceptive and the story incomplete.

Spoiler Alert: This is not the complete fall

I have read some of the rants about this particular installment of the Walking Dead and I must agree with most of it. Maybe I should add a rating criteria of how high my expectations are for an audiobook and how closely it came to that. On the other hand I will try to not let my emotions get involved as much as possible, but I am sure they will sway me a bit, because if I didn't have them I would have been so disappointed with the decision to make the fans wait for the final novel in March 2014. The Walking Dead: The Fall of the Governor - Book One has the least amount of zombie human interaction of the previous titles and in that aspect it really does fail. Very little substance is contained in this story, not a whole lot happens, introduced to some new characters that I hope will play a role somewhere. All that being said this third audiobook was not about surviving the zombies, but it was about surviving what we have turned into as a result of surviving the zombies. There were some very very unsettling scenes, one that I am so happy that it happened off "screen" was the implied brutal rape of Michonne by the Governor. The other was the savage torturing of the Governor by Michonne, this almost made my stop listening it was so graphic. On the plus side The Fall of the Governor showed us exactly how insane the Governor is instead of implying it. I found it very interesting how member of our favorite zombie killing clan from TV made an appearance and how different it was from the TV show, not sure how this all happened in the graphic novel. So, this was a disappointment to me and many others and I really hope that it will be made up for in the next audiobook. In my ratings I have judged the book as it is without my maddening thoughts of what this could have been.

Outstanding.

Any additional comments?

I have the hardcover editions of all of the 'graphic novels' and the novels in this series. I have all of the TV episodes on DVD. WELL DONE, I have to say, I wasn't sure if Kirkman and Co. could deliver without pictures and/or video. I was very pleasantly surprised. It requires real talent to pull off the zombie genre without pictures (or video). They certainly have it.

Part One?

Do you think The Fall of the Governor needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yeah. Part TWO.

Any additional comments?

Story was great. Played flawlessly on my phone. But it would be nice if it said "Part One" in bigger letters...or "Book 3, Part 1" would've been nice. Not feeling ripped off. Just not happy about having to pay for Part 2.

Most disturbing book ever

Would you try another book from Robert Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga and/or Fred Berman?

I read the first two books and really enjoyed them - this one took an extremely dark and disgusting turn.

Would you ever listen to anything by Robert Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga again?

Probably not

Would you be willing to try another one of Fred Berman’s performances?

Yes

Any additional comments?

I got physically ill during some of the scenes and literally broke out in a cold sweat and almost passed out. I have a strong stomach and normally like books like this - I really enjoyed the first two. I don't know if it was the authors intent to elicit such a reaction. I can't help but think it was - it was highly unnecessary as it was a good plot that didn't need the over-the-top gruesome nature.

Fred does it again!

What did you like best about this story?

The more morbid detail to the torchure Michone leaves on Phillip Blake before leaving Woodbury.

Have you listened to any of Fred Berman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Fred does a great job with this book series and does a awesome job with book 3. I hope they continue to use him for the remainder of this series.

Any additional comments?

As for the book itself, yes predictable if you read the comics but, I like seeing it from other characters within the story and not just from Rick and his crew.

Will be returning this one

This book was so over the top with its description of the torture scenes especially in the end that I had to stop listening.
Not enjoyable.

Bloody awesome

If it wasn't for the last quarter of this book it would've been a two star review but Michonne came in to save the day. Would've loved to see this played out in the series. That was some Wu Tang torture chamber level stuff.

The fall of the Governor

Really enjoyed this. I'm a big fan of Kirkman and have been reading The Walking Dead comics for quite some time. That said I was really excited when I discovered that a set of novels had been written about the series most loved/hated bad guy, the Governor.
The Fall of the Governor covers the events from the comics but from the perspective of the residents of Woodbury rather than Rick and his group. It was really interesting to get a peek into the thoughts of the Governor.
I'm looking forward to finding out what happens next as told from the people outside the prison!

Long time in the coming but worth the wait.

I counted down the days until this little baby was released on audio book, and I wasn't disappointed.

Very brutal, but totalling compelling.

Better to read it. Probably.

Hmmm. I can't decide whether or not this is badly written or badly narrated. I've actually read this novel before, had forgotten all about it. Hearing it this time around, there are genuinely times where I found myself muttering in disapproval. One chapter has a character repeatedly cursing the same line over and over and I had enough. It even at times makes sympathetic characters seem annoying and obtuse. So I guess it's probably the former who cops the blame. That said, the narrators choice to voice each individual character is a poor one, particularly female parts.

I've starting listening to books to suit my lifestyle but honestly, this really does grate your nerves at times. It does clear up something from the comics I was confused about, and when no one is talking it's enjoyable enough, but overall I would give it a pass.

The best in the series so far

Rick Glenn Michone thrown into the world of the crazy governor. Really good insight into the madman as well. The best one so far.
