Publisher's Summary

Vienna Stratton knew she only had herself to blame. You didn't let yourself become indebted to a man like Dane Davenport, no matter how badly you needed his help. As his personal assistant, she was very aware that the globally successful CEO was ruthless and unforgiving.

Of course, if she'd known he'd request that she be his wife for 12 months, she'd have hesitated in accepting his help. Because what she'd learned from Dane was that the devil wasn't ugly and terrorizing. He was seductive and captivating. He hummed with whispers of temptation - the temptation to sin and surrender, to let him brand and possess you. He awakened every need and fantasy you had.

He could even make you love him.

Contains mature themes.

Dane & Vienna

*****Spoiler Alert*****

Audible review. Single POV (Vienna's). Standalone. Fake marriage to gain an inheritance. I liked the narrator overall but she mispronounced a few very common words/names. I enjoyed most of the story but I did get tired of "baby girl," "hmm," and "good girl." Also the story didn't circle back to the prologue until chapter 29 (listed as chapter 30). I had a hard time deciding whether the author was trying to make this a rom-com or a suspense, her jokes felt forced and fell flat everytime. I was also confused by Vienna's public loyalty to Dane while internally calling Dane "warlock" and the devil. Trigger warnings: Simon, Vienna's father, has Dissociative Identity Disorder (multiple personalities); Simon's mom abused him; Vienna's mom abused her until one of Simon's personalities beat her up; Dane's dad abused him; Vienna spent a long time in foster care and was abused by Heather, her foster sister; Dane's twin died when they were 8 from an allergic reaction to a bee sting; and there are lots of lies and deception throughout.

Dane (37) needs to marry before his 38th birthday and stay married for at least a year in order to inherit from his uncle. His uncle left Dane and his 2 brothers the same amount with the same contingency. If they don't marry it's split equally among the married brothers. Dane's workaholic uncle never married and wants more for his nephews. Dane's mom died of cancer when he was very young, his twin brother died of an allergic reaction to a bee sting when they were 8, his dad was physically violent and killed himself because he was deeply in debt when Dane was 15, and his dad's brother raised Dane and Dane's remaining two brothers after their father's death. Dane helped Vienna (25) with her ex-boyfriend and he wants her to marry him in return. She agrees to help him and they elope to Las Vegas. Vienna also had a violent childhood. Her mom was physically abusive until one of her dad's personalities beat her up defending Vienna and her father was finally diagnosed at which point he finally got help for his disorder. Vienna went into the foster care system and was raised by a nice couple who had a daughter of their own. Their daughter bullied and abused Vienna until they came home and found Vienna in their trunk and they finally learned what their daughter had been doing. What started out as an a repaid favor quickly becomes a lasting love with several bumps along the way when Dane and Vienna's families' both interfere in their marriage. There is an epilogue that gives a glimpse of what their life is like 8 years after they admit they love each other and want to stay married. JP

Fabulous hot story

Loved the cast of characters, even the evil ones. There were many different plots among the people going on, it kept you guessing in a good way what they were up to. It took a little while to get to their sex life, but it was blazing hot once they got started. A very well rounded book as usual for Ms Wright, I love all of her books specially the Phoenix & Mercury Packs paranormals. Great narration by Samantha Cook.

Lovely Story

I have lots if this authors books in my library. I love her writing style. This new contemporary romance is now on my fave lists. I hope she writes more of these. The only negative is that the narrator did not simulate from character to character very well. Often I couldn’t tell who was speaking.

Genuinely Loved

Loved this story! Lots of surprising twists and turns... and *face fanning* steam.

Samantha Cook is one of the best narrators. She has a gift for brining characters to life and her delivery is quirky and unique. If you loved this, listen to That Guy by Kim Jones.

The Favor

This was such a cute book definitely worth a credit. I think my only complaint is that I wish the book would of had both points of views of the main characters. I had a hard time of trying to figure out the male character and what he was thinking. I get that he is supposed to come across distant and all but I just feel like you don't really know him by the end of the book. But all and all very good 👍

YAAAAASSSSS!!!

This book had it all -- an unusual engagement, blasts from the past, a mix of annoying and beloved family, crazy exes and crazier in-laws. And an alpha who has met his match. By the time I finished reading, I was asking the Universe to send me a Dane Davenport! Vienna was bright, bold without being a total bitch, and she was confident in herself without being cold or untouchable. There were a few times where she lost it with the hero, but she was never unreasonable or dysfunctional. The characters were brought together brilliantly. The Favor is now in my 'Favorite Contemporaries' pile.

Such a great listen!

It was long, but so developed and so worth it. I love the characters. I recommend this book. It’s definitely worth 5 stars. I would have also enjoyed the story from Dane’s point of view though.

Great standalone from Suzanne Wright

I've read a lot of Suzanne Wright's work including a lot from her many fantasy series. I submit that her standalone novels are her best. I enjoyed the others but they tend to become very formulaic and decreasingly substantial the further into a series you get. I eventually gave up on each series. She's a great writer... there just only so much you can do with a storyline before it needs to be put to bed. For good.

The Favor is enjoyable, vulnerable, and addictive. Dane is definitely an anti-hero, but he endeavors to be the best version of himself for Vienna, the more he cares for her. And Vienna's loyalty to him (even when that loyalty is challenged a couple times) is commendable. In a world these days where people are so cavalier about relationships and commitment, it's nice to listen to a story about two people who are genuinely committed and loyal out of principle first, and love second. And this applies to many of the characters.

Samantha Cook was great.

A great contemporary romance

The Favor is a contemporary romance with a more than healthy dose of Suzanne Wright’s usual wit and snark. I smirked and I laughed out loud on more than one occasion. I loved Vienna’s attitude and Dane is smoking hot and has that dark brooding intelligence.

Both main characters have people in their lives that have reason to separate these two well before their anniversary. There are suspense filled moments and moments that made me swoon a little and I was awake well into the early hours listening as I just didn’t get to a point that felt it was a good time to put it down and go to sleep.

There are some wonderfully steamy NSFW moments but the story isn’t erotica. It is a sexy romance that is cleverly written and whose characters back stories are complex and very well developed. I get the feeling that Suzanne knows her characters before she starts their stories. It is not only the main characters that have that amazing level of development, the surrounding family and friends are every bit as interesting and Vienna’s neighbours were responsible for more than one unexpected laugh escaping.

The Favor deals with some serious mental health matters and I love the way that she portrays mental illness. The knowledge, compassion and representation show something that I rarely come across in books that are not mainly about the condition.

The wonderfully talented Samantha Cook narrates the whole book and she recognisably represents the different characters, their moods and attitudes.

The listening experience of The Favor was five star across the board.

I am impressed

Finally I have found a story that doesn't have a ditsy idiot as the female and the generic cavemen for the male character.

The story is basically from the viewpoint of a personal assistant who marries the boss to help him get the inheritance from his uncle....which turns into love and a HEA with some trouble along the way (the typical plot of a love story). Instead of just one big area of trouble there's a lot of little ones too that help you see parts of the character's personalities (like when she's nearly hit by a car, he saved her but she grazes her hand.... He ever so gently cleans her wounds and patches her up as if she is incredibly delicate to him.

There's also some saucy scenes.... Not as "kinky" as other books, but he's definitely a dominant male in and out of the bedroom and a few of the scenes have decent descriptions of what they're doing.

The background of the characters all show different types of abuse and their behaviour /personalities aren't "normal" due to that fact. So there's signs of mental growth and I love the way that the writer has dealt with the different situations /mental health issues. Also showing how different people react to the different types of problems. This impressed me to be honest.

The performance of the narrator is spot on and if I had to make any sort of complaint then I'd probably say that it was difficult at times to decifer which male was talking (they sometimes all sounded exactly the same).

All in all I thoroughly enjoyed the story and I'm sad to say that I've finished it. So I'd definitely recommend that you give it a go. I just wish that I could have more 😊

💜😘💜

Great book

I absolutely love Suzanne Wright’s books and this one is no exception. She has departed from her normal paranormal/shifters books with this one but she still injected all of her normal traits: strong and witty female heroine; alpha male; drama; sex and funny interactions. It is an east story.
I love the female voices but I don’t think she did the male voices well. Maybe, in future, having 2 narrators (male and female) would be best.

Enjoyable listen

I enjoyed listening to this. Was a bit like a soap opera at times, but satisfying in the way that side plots and drama can be in those types of shows. It was a bit tell rather than show at times which meant I didn’t emotionally connect with the story as much as I might have done, but I still liked it.

Good story, bad narration.

I enjoyed the story, however, the narration is terrible. I don't know why this narrator was chosen to narrate this book as she really isn't suited to it, and she just doesn't do the book any justice at all. She has a rather juvenile way of narrating which doesn't fit this kind of book, and her male characters all sound like young, whiney prepubescent boys. Again not at all fitting with the characters. To be honest the narration completely ruined this for me and I think I will stick to the Kindle version instead.

The past can taint the future

This story had all the hallmarks of a good romance novel, only with more of the nasty, jealous mix than most.
Vienna and Dane both had issues from their pasts that made them wary of ever having a happy future.
Love wins in the end.
Happy endings are important!
