Story
The man most hated by the LAPD - a black lawyer who has made his name by bringing lawsuits alleging racism and brutality by police officers - has been found murdered on the eve of a high-profile trial. The list of suspects includes half the police force. And Harry Bosch is the detective chosen to head the investigation. The political dangers of the case are huge. If it's not investigated fairly, the public outcry could make the Rodney King riots look tame. But a full investigation will take Bosch into the ugliest corners of law enforcement.

Publisher's Summary
In tough times, crime is one of the few things that still pay, but if defence attorney Mickey Haller was expecting an uptick in business during the economic downturn, the reality is a different story. Even people needing legal representation to keep them out of jail have to make cut-backs, it seems. In fact, the most significant part of Mickey's business right now is not about keeping clients out of jail but about keeping a roof over their heads, as the foreclosure boom hits thousands of people who were granted unrealistic mortgages in the good times and now face being kicked to the curb by ruthless corporations. Lisa Trammel had been a client of Mickey's for eight months - his very first foreclosure case, in fact - and although so far he'd managed to stop the bank from taking her house, the strain and sense of injustice are beginning to take their toll, and the bank had recently got a restraining order to prevent her protesting against their fraudulent practices. But now the bank's CEO, Mitchell Bondurant, has been found in the bank's car park with a bullet in his brain, and Lisa is about to be indicted for murder. For Mickey, it's back to what he does best on the biggest stage of all, but if he thought defending Lisa Trammel was going to be a walk in the park, he'd be wrong. Not only is he about to learn some startling truths about his client, but also about himself, and by the time the verdict is in, Mickey's whole world will have been turned upside down.

Another Great Installment To The Series
I have listened to every Michael Connelly book and love the way he writes and choses excellent narrators. I enjoyed most of this book but it all got a bit predictable and I knew the ending well before the book finished. The narrator did an excellent job whcih really added to the book.

It's one of few books that was difficult to interrupt listening to. Thrilling, very nicely written characters, excellent pace and last but not least, the voice of the narrator was very vivid, kept me listening after midnight. OK, I gave up 45 minutes before the end and went sleep, but I woke up early in the morning to finish it.

As good as it gets
Would you consider the audio edition of The Fifth Witness to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print edition.
What other book might you compare The Fifth Witness to and why?
The Lincoln Lawyer - same character - same fast pace.
What about Peter Giles’s performance did you like?
He portrays characters cleverly, making each unique and easily distinguishable.
Any additional comments?
A stunning, clever, fast moving book with more twists than the road to Kosciusco.

Another excellent Mickey Haller story
Another "page turner" (so to speak) in The Lincoln Lawyer series. The Fifth Witness continues the Mickey Haller saga and delivers another excellent courtroom drama complete with Michael Connelly's signature surprise ending.
I laughed out loud when the Hollywood director asked Haller what he thought of Matthew McConaughey playing him in the movie. Nice one, Mr Connelly.

Again I was more than happy with the Michael Connelly that I have come to really enjoy. He does make the reader (well I really mean the listener in this case) step into the world he creates as we keep listening to his words unravel into another one of his great tales. I was very pleased with the narrator and his ability to ensure the listener a well told story. I feel a good buy alround.

consistent connelly
From the start, I'm a Connelly fan. But I have to say, Harry Bosch was getting tiresome. So, I'm glad he has a new character, Mickey Haller, who first appeared in the Lincoln Lawer (now a pretty good film). In the Fifth Witness Mickey wrestles with the defense of a woman who is losing her house to a bank foreclosure, a current theme if there is one. He does a great job and is assisted by his team who are just as interesting as the main character. The plot twists at the end. A great read.

What a story and what an ending!
This is my second book by Connelly. I remember buying the 'Lincoln Lawyer' simply because I needed distracting from science books and though that it
might have been an interesting crime story novel. But now I'm hooked on Connelly's books and can't wait for the next one.
This story compels the listener to want to know more about this case and how it unfolds inside the courts, with various moment's outside the courts. My
favourite characters are probably the Judge & Ms Freeman, apart from Micky Haller of course, as their personalities are well depicted in the framework of
the story. And what an unexpected ending!

Up to date book
Having listened to most of Michael Connely's books, I like all of them, but this one was a wee bit better, than the last few. Enjoyed it from beginning to end, liked the characters, the book is very much up to date, has great personalities in it liked the bikers and the names for the two heavies! Although anticipating a twist, this one was brilliant. Looking foreward to the next book, as good as this one, the narrator was not bad either. This story could actually continue......
Anyone in doubt, if you like Michael Connelly, buy it, first timer for Michael Connelly, good too, you are opening a load of good books to come.

More from the Lincoln Lawyer
Daddy or chips? Bosch or Haller? After the gloom of 'Nine Dragons' it was great to see Mickey Haller back. This book does have a moral spine in it’s commentary on the state of the US housing market but this did not hamper the book for me. I enjoyed the development of Haller as a character and, whereas the other books had mixed positive/negative story lines I felt this book pays off and is more fulfilling. It always felt to me like Michael Connelly was never sure whether he liked Mickey Haller and played with set-up and knock down but this time out it feels like there is a purpose for the character; that we’re in the middle of a story arc. I hope this is a taste of what’s to come and, if so, I can’t wait.

Mmmm ... a little disappointed
OK ... I'll admit it right at the outset .... I'm much more of a Harry Bosch fan than a Mickey Haller fan ... Harry is a much more complicated individual and Haller can often come across as not the most pleasant man ever written about.
But Michael Connelly is one of my favourite all-time authors and definitely the master of the procedural crime novel. This, as always, is excellently written but the story is just a little ... strained. the problem starts right at the outset, because I do not believe that, even in America, there was enough evidence for the police to charge Haller's client with the murder at the centre of the book. A real lawyer would have made a motion to dismiss (and almost certainly had it granted) right at the outset. However, without the charge, there is no novel.
Having said that, I do like the way the novel expands on and promises more of the Haller story.
Not his best, then, but even a below-par Connelly is a better bet than the vast majority of crime authors

Mickey Haller goes from strength to strength
Another intriguing legal story featuring the defence lawyer, Mickey Haller, this time defending people who face having their homes repossessed because of the economic downturn and some shady dealings in corporate finance, so very topical. What I really enjoy in the court battles is the author's way of describing why the legal representatives on both sides act the way they do, their motives and the thinking behind their various moves. By the end of this story we pick up hints that Mickey is about to take a big step in both his legal and personal life. Roll on the next book in this series!

Brilliant story with many twists
A great book - I really enjoyed the Bosch character and I’m liking his half brother as well. I like the way Connolly doesn’t waste my time with padding and over egging the adjectives.
It took a while to get used to the narrator who read like he was delivering a series of one liners. The intonation was wrong for me but the story outweighed.
Haller uses every means to do the best by his client - I love being privy to the twists and turns as the case evolves.
You won’t be disappointed at the end if the story - only bereft that you have finished an excellent book and need a replacement.

This story just dragged and dragged
Heavens! What a painfully tedious book this was to listen to. Many times the judge in this case admonished Haller to hurry up and make his point, and he was right to do so. THE FIFTH WITNESS just dragged on and on.
The only things that save this book was the continuing development of the Mickey Haller character and a couple of twists within the overall storyline. This is not a book I can see myself coming back to.
Peter Giles commendably narrates this book. I enjoy his narration of Haller, the main character. There is also enough breadth and skill when he is narrating other characters, including female characters.
