Publisher's Summary

Fourteen-year-old Vega Jane lives in the village of Wormwood, where life is nasty, brutish, and short. Villagers have been told that there is nothing outside of Wormwood except for the Quag, a foul forest filled with terrifying beasts. No one comes, no one goes, and Wormwood has stayed this way for generations. Until Vega's friend Quentin Herms disappears.

Quentin leaves Vega a secret message hinting that there's a way out of Wormwood and something extraordandinary on the other side. As Vega begins to investigate, she realizes that Wormwood is a village built on dangerous lies. And that powerful people are willing to kill in order to keep it that way. Soon Vega is careening down a path that will either lead straight to the truth...or straight into an early grave.

An original great from Baldacci!

The reviews I have read so far are simply unfair. I suppose if you like the same ol' from every author without their giving any extra creativity or imagination, The Finisher may disappoint you. I thought it was a great departure for Baldacci and my only complaint is it ended without and ending. I hope that is because Baldacci intends for it to be a trilogy. This was a great write and the person who read it did a terrific job particularly with the main characters. This was a well crafted story from beginning to end and the character development was perfect. Although the character development may have taken longer than some may have wanted, I would argue it was necessary. I hope Baldacci writes more of this really creative stuff!!!

Another side of Baldacci

I was totally surprised by this book. It is GREAT and so very un-Baldacci of the past. He shows how good he is as a writer in this fantasy formated book.

not your regular David Baldacci

Would you listen to The Finisher again? Why?

the only reason I would listen to it again is to refresh my mind if I decide to read the second book of the series when it comes out

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Finisher?

the ending

Any additional comments?

this is not 4 regular Baldacci fans. I personally am not a fan of his, but I do like young adult fantasy fiction and this book hit it right on the head.

Not what I expected

Any additional comments?

Not what I expected. A lot of unanswer questions that make it fraustrated to following the story. No explanations on the "new world" the author creates which make it very hard to understand. Use a lot of different "words" e.g. session = years, care = hospital that were not explained ahead of time. The main character, Vega is very reactive and flat. She does not seem to have a clear understanding of what she wants to do. This makes the story very unappealing.

Surprisingly Bad for Baldacci

I have say that I am a Baldacci fanatic. I like his story telling. However, this one just never quite rose to the occasion. The performance was good. The writing ~ by a man telling a story totally from a female perspective was outstanding. Unfortunately, that was about the only fascinating part of this writing. The story took nearly 1/2 the book to get going; i.e., for the story to begin to be interesting - and then it was pretty good for about 3 hours and the last two hours (maybe 90 minutes) just petered out. I got the sense that the author never really knew where he was going or what he intended to do with this story.

I expected more from Baldacci. I think he went out on a limb here to try and cash in on the 'fantasy story' that is sucking up the interest of the youngsters presently. And, maybe a youngster will like this story but it just didn't carry the day for me. I cannot recommend that anyone spend the time or energy trying to get through this story.

Terrible

What disappointed you about The Finisher?

Story, vocabulary. Is this a version of Ayn Rand, George Orwell, or Glen Beck?

Mr Baldacci must have become a grandfather

While his other books are coherent mysteries or thrillers, this adventure reads like a story told to a female grandchild. The 15 year old heroine has many admirable qualities -- courage, compassion and persistence. But this reader became frustrated by detailed descriptions of situations and characters whose purpose never is explained. I would not purchase future books to find out what comes next.

Awful

Would you try another book from David Baldacci and/or Nicola Barber?

I have loved every David Baldacci's book thus far. I purchased this one without reading any of the review and I'm regretting it. The story was very hard to get into...the first 3 hours was so boring that I had to just end it. I'm wishing that I could get my money back.

Has The Finisher turned you off from other books in this genre?

No.

Did Nicola Barber do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

The reader did a great job, it was the story that was really bad.
