Publisher's Summary

The first 40 days after the birth of a child offer an essential and fleeting period of rest and recovery for the new mother. Based on author Heng Ou's own postpartum experience with zuo yuezi, a set period of “confinement”, in which a woman remains at home focusing on healing and bonding with her baby, The First Forty Days revives the lost art of caring for the mother after birth.

As modern mothers are pushed to prematurely “bounce back” after delivering their babies, and are often left alone to face the physical and emotional challenges of this new stage of their lives, the first 40 days provide a lifeline - a source of connection, nourishment, and guidance.

The book includes 60 simple recipes for healing soups; replenishing meals and snacks; and calming and lactation-boosting teas, all formulated to support the unique needs of the new mother. In addition to the recipes, this warm and encouraging guide offers advice on arranging a system of help during the postpartum period, navigating relationship challenges, and honoring the significance of pregnancy and birth.

Great read! Much better than the 4th trimester book. Read this one! I wish I had read this with my first pregnancy.

Whole book about nothing

Take rest and eat well reiterated in million words. Good ideas but kindergarten level of research.

Wish I had this BEFORE my baby came!

I love this book so much! I will use it as a guide to prepare for my next postpartum experience. It helped me to slow down and realize that relaxing and recovering were the best options for myself and for my baby. I didn't have a sweet for 30 days and that's saying something because I love cookies! But I was inspired to improve my health!

Amazing !! It's a must read for mums.

So insightful, with practical guidance on how to take the wisdom of the ancients and apply it to our modern time and reclaim this beautiful period that is 'the first forty days' post-partum

A must for all mums to be!

I really loved this book. It solidified my understanding of why Traditional Chinese Medicine advocates this wise practice. The book is inspiring and the recipes are simple. I’ve even made my first bone broth and stew and they were amazing. Looking forward to stocking my freezer and being prepared to be nourished by the food and those around me while I focus on nourishing my little one when they arrive. I’m going to get the hard copy of this book as well as it’s a fabulous reference.

Beautiful Message, But....

Amazing story with heavy reference to Chinese customs and traditions (which I loved!) but I wish the author wouldn't have referenced so many American brands and shops. To readers outside of the USA, this was pointless to know which company/brand the author preferred to buy her gelatin from. The last 15 minutes of the book just seemed like an ad for Amazon & Trader Joe's.
