Publisher's Summary

Despite what you might have been told, we're not inherently selfish. The truth is we're inherently kind. Scientific evidence has proven that kindness changes the brain, impacts the heart and immune system, is an antidote to depression, and even slows the aging process. We're actually genetically wired to be kind.

In The Five Side Effects of Kindness, David Hamilton shows that the effects of kindness are felt daily throughout our nervous system. When we're kind we feel happier, and our bodies are healthiest. In his down-to-earth and accessible style, David shares how:

  • Kindness makes us happier
  • Kindness is good for the heart
  • Kindness slows aging
  • Kindness improves relationships
  • Kindness is contagious

A must read for everyone today!

This book is an absolutely fantastic read, I knew kindness could have a big impact on others but knowing how much it can help ourselves was so interesting. So many things I am going to start to do. Wonderfully written, easy to understand and so many wonderful examples and stories. I’m going to consciously try to do more kind things and have already seen the positive effect.

I am a trainee counsellor and think some of the ideas shared in this book could really help clients with depression, along with counsellors themselves! Thank you David and I’m going to download your other book I Heart Me next, think I could do with improving my self compassion!

Worth it for the biology, but..

Some great biological motivators highlighted in here and the book is succinct enough. Manages to say much more than “be kind, be healthy.”

I was a little discouraged to see the vast majority of the fifty acts of kindness examples given included spending money. Buy coffee for a stranger, dinner for a friend, pre-pay a car parking ticket, food shop for an elderly neighbour etc etc etc. Would have appreciated more freely available ideas! There is an acknowledgment that children are excellent examples of kindness. Well, they manage that just fine without a weekly kindness budget but sadly the examples given here predominately favoured spending money in order to be kind.
